Hey everyone,

I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm 16 years old and enjoy singing. In two weeks at my school we have auditions for the variety show (it's like a talent show). I'm part of a band with a drummer, keyboard, rhythm guitar, and myself as lead guitar.

We've been planning to play "Dirty Little Secret" by the All American Rejects. We have the instrumental down perfectly. However, the singing is the hard part.

They nominated me for the part of lead singer because they say I have a very nice voice and sound like the lead singer of "AAR". However, I've been recording my singing with a tape recorder with the song in the back round, and it sounds not too good to me. I can hit the high notes that the real singer can, however, I often strain on some parts which results in a poor sound. I've tried singing in a lower key, but it takes away from the emotion of the song.

My question to everyone here is: What can I do in two weeks that will aid me in my singing technique and allow me to hit those high notes with little strain and make my overall sound better?

Thanks in advance! Very Happy

Hello Chad,

I'm guessing you're "belting" rather than using your diaphragm, so as you only have one song to sing I'd suggest simply practicing the song several times a day between now and the show.

The more practice you get at hitting the high notes the easier it will get, and it will also help you because you won't have to consciously try to remember each part of the song - this is important on gig night when a little bit of nervousness kicks in.

One problem with the belting technique is that you may get a sore throat from practicing - if this is the case then don't push it too hard, and make sure you warm up at the start of practice by singing scales for 10 minutes.

I hope this helps,
Jason.
