I am going to buy a new laptop.

Most don't have a line in. I know there are USB adapters that you can use in place of a line in, but do they work just as well?

How do you record sound into your computers?

My lappy has line-in, but I've never used it for quality recordings.

Take a look at some of M-Audio's range http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.list&ID=mobileinterfaces

Also the PCMCIA Audigy 2 ZS at http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=204&product=10769

There is a USB gismo invented just for this purpose (laptops or desktops, PC or Mac). It is an audio in/out audio interface that will either record from another source (i.e., an old LP from your stereo system to your lappy HD, or - with the mic input - voice), or play music files from your computer through your home stereo (output). It requires no special software, but will require you to hook up your stereo or mic through 1/8" miniplugs (available at your local Radio Shack). It's a mere $40.00 and I've been using this for a couple of years to record (through my stereo) most of my older LPs onto CD-Rs. I use the freeware program Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) as my audio editor/recorder. Anyway, the gismo is called I-Mic and is available from Griffin Technologies ( http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic2/). Click on Audio Solutions, then I-Mic. Hope this helps.
