| the only reliable way to do it is by listening because there isn't any software that can do it |

Over the last 10 years I've seen many discussions on this topic.
Eventually most conversations get around to talking about identifying separate instruments by using fast fourier transforms to find each instruments' characteristic harmonic fingerprint in every note played.
But all that ever happens is people talk about it, and as far as I know, no one has ever actually done it.
I wish it could be done - it would automate the creation of MIDI files and sheet music (yes I know there are a couple of extra steps in sheet music, but the hardest part is finding which instruments have played what).
So, Dan was correct - you need to develop your aural music skills - there are no short cuts yet. |

And that takes a lot of time. A few short-suts would be to locate players who play the type of instrument(s) that you are trying to decode. A recorder may sound like a piccollo and a bassoon can sound like a tuba so you have to listen to your selected type of music close or have someone that knows what the instrument is.
If you know what instrument you are tring to identify, get music that has minimum arrangement. If you are having a difficult time discerning violin from a cello then get some chamber music and listen to it until you can tell which is which. |
