I had been recording on a Yamaha AW16G and sync'ing to my G4 desktop. Then recently, I got my Intel iMac with 1.5GB RAM. I love my computer! And I am having fun with GarageBand, and finding it to be really easy to navigate (I just wish I could still sync). I recently recorded a few things with vocals right into the machine, and put my G back into the box for now.

Only problem is that GarageBand locks up once in a while, says I am playing too many tracks. Even with only 6 or 8 playing, and not audio tracks, either. Any thoughts?

Also, are there any FREE soft synths out there that I can use with GarageBand?

You say you are not using audio tracks, this means you must be using more processor intensive software instruments or samplers, yes?

Audio tracks are far less CPU hungry, so the answer to your problem is to bounce the audio intruments together with any FX you're using onto another audio track. Then you can switch off all the excess devices to conserve CPU and RAM

There are some freeware VST soft synths that will run on the Mac. Do a search here on hitsquad in the Mac section.
