I'm pretty good at writing melodies, but not so great with harmonies. I'm looking for software with an auto-composing feature that will try different harmonies to match my melody. All the auto-composers I've seen auto-compose the entire thing, and I'd like to have one that generates parts that fit with my own melody. This will give me a starting place... I don't expect to get performance-quality accompaniment, but if I hear something I like I can adapt it.

So, is there any software that will do this?

A piano can do this, your just talking about building chords, nothing special, thats what harmonies are;)

So if you can "write" a melody...you can develop the harmony structure from a keyboard..

Keep in touch.

yes of course you should learn about harmony...
i get a look on Chordware Progression Assistant v7.9, it seems to do the job.
anyway you may try first to put some basses under your melody, this could be done without special knowledge.
after that, there is "colors" you can bring using harmolody (without knowledge) or 3rd stacks, rules here depends of context(tonal/modal), so you'll need to learn about! Rolling Eyes
otherways is to try Sensomusic Usine, there's a lot of audio analysis with midi conversion and auto-harmony scripts (contextual harmonisation witch include min, Maj, blues, limited VI, senso harmo, etc...)
It allows to put chords naps and basslines below your melody...
then you just have to sing, the software can do the rest.

A few titles worth looking into.

Harmony Assistant:

Harmony Engine – Vocal Modeling Harmony Generator:

Here is an interesting product that looks cutting edge...as far as cutting edge can be when we are supposedly on it from the start.

Mike Oldfield, whose song "Tubular bells" was a huge success in the 70s, used this vocal software in a CD released 2007:
