Hi,

I want to use an old PC to replace a bunch of rack mounted sound modules. (Kurzwell, Yamaha, Emu etc...)

I will be using this computer for performance only and I have no desire to record or do anything beyond selecting a patch and playback of sound samples when I hit a key on my controller.

What kind of program do I need to look for in order to use my computer as a stand alone sound module? (The less bells and whistles the better! Exclamation )

Thank you for any and all help!!! Laughing

Hello, I Have A Couple Of Ideas Which Should Sort You Out:

1. Steinberg V-Stack: Is Exactly What You Are Looking For, It Is Designed Specically For The Hosting Of Multiple Plug-Ins & Allows VST Instruments & DX Instruments (Which Would Be Replacing Your Hardware Modules), It Is Able To Host VST & DX Plug-In Effects To Further Sculpt Your Sounds. It Is Laid Out With A Simple GUI, All Setups Can Be Stored As Can Your Plug-In Preset Patches/Banks & Its Perfect For Live Use.

2. Spin Audio Spin VMC Virtual Mixing Console: Is Very Similar To The Above & Requires No Further Comment Apart From It May Be Less Expensive Than V-Stack.

3. Spin Audio ASIO FX Processor: Is A Sort Of Extremely Slimmed Down Version Of VMC, Less Flexable & Is Decent But Might Not Offer Enough Routing/Flexability Than V-Stack Or VMC, But May Be Worth A Look.

4. Propellerhead Reason: An Absolute Must If If Using VST/DX Instruments To Replace Your Modules Is Not Part Of Your Plan, However The Lastest & Greatest Version Of Reason (Version 4.0) May Be Too Much For Your Older PC's CPU, So Version 3.0 Might Give You Better Over All Performance.

5. Ableton Live: The Most Flexable, Intuative & Feature Packed Of All The Possable Solutions, Especially If You Bought The Version Which Comes With The Entire 'Essential Instrument's Collection' Which Can Cover Alot Of Sonic Ground, Has Really Good Built In Sampling/Routing Plus Much, Much More To Offer & Will Happily Host Any VST Instrument & Effect Plug-Ins You May Want To Use. I Use Live & Really Cant Find Anything Bad To Say About It & Live Will Do So Much More Than Any Of The Above mentioned Solutions And Is Much More 'Complete' & Closest To An All In One D.A.W.

6. Buy A New PC/MAC, Ableton Live 7.0.5, Propellerhead Reason 4.0, Native Instrument's Komplete 5.0 Bundle & The Vintage Collection By Arturia: It Will Cost You A Fair Whack But Will Give You The Ultimate Virtual Sound Setup: Just Rewire Propellerhead Reason 4.0 Into Ableton Live 7.0 & Also Load Up Whichever Plug-In Instruments & Effects You Wish, Setup A Template For Your Master Keyboard Controller Then I Promise You, Only Your Imagination Can Limit You & You Will 'Dissapear' Into A Whole New World!

I'm Pretty Sure You Can Download Demo's Of Any Of The Above Mentioned Software.

E-Mail Me If You Need To, As I Can Go Into More Detail About Specific Setups & How To Impliment Them Audiowise Because Its A Damned Nightmare Of Endless Options!

Hope Thid Helps & Happy Audioware Hunting
