I'm a musician and I'm trying to produce my own album on my computer with my voice recorded. I'm currently using Cakewalk Sonar 8 and my computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 desktop with Windows XP and I've never had the sound card replaced since I bought it. Sound card (I believe this is the sound card model) is a SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio dated 2003.
Does Cakewalk rely on my computer's sound card capabilities for voice recording or can I record my voice directly to the software (does software capability override sound card capability)? And if my sound card is an issue what should I look for in order to do a quality voice recording on a reasonable budget (some of the higher end sound cards are over $1000 but those are more for hardcore computer gamers). Thanks. |

You need at least one quality microphone...not a USB mic either, good to high quality. But this is not all you will need.
A good quality interface can be purchased for 5-$600 USD dollars.
You have two options, as I did not see a firewire port in the specs of this Dell.
You can get a PCI sound card (Best) or a USB audio interface (Good)
My reasoning to place USB as lower is that it is not as stable in an audio recording environment as either FireWire or a PCI type. It is stable for one or two tracks of recording, which does not allow any room for growth. And growth is inevitable.
So you want to look for a PCI interface first and USB second.
No gamers card. Do not fool yourself or listen to your computer geek friend up the road(you know the one) you want something designed to work audio. Especially with a top tier recording package like Cakewalk.
