sound problem

Hi, I would like to know if you can help me with my pc. I had my pc working fine before and I just up dated it to a new version of windows xp and I got no sound in my pc. Every time I try to play something or go to sound control I get messages saying that I have no sound mixer device. I already try to fix it by control panel/sounds,audio,speakers, but I have no way to do anything, cause the settings are off, I mean, I cant make any changes. It sounds like I have no sound card installed, but it was working fine before. Anything that you can help me with that? Thank you so much.
