| It's a synthesizer and a sequencer in the same program. The synthesizer uses samples (.WAV files for example) to generate the sounds. It can also change the pitch of the sounds to play different notes, and change some other parameters such as the volume, the stereo position of the sound. The sequencer commands the synthesizer. It follows the score. A song is temporally divided into patterns, and each pattern is divided in lines (in a soundtracker score, time is the vertical axe). Usually, a pattern represents 4 bars and a beat fits in 4 lines. The partition is horizontaly splited into tracks. Each sound played occupies one track. You can play many sounds at the same time, but you are limited by the number of tracks. An instrument can occupy one or more tracks, depending if you want to play single notes or chords.
