Software Description

Rivendell aims to be a complete radio broadcast automation solution, with the facilities for the acquisition, management, scheduling and playout of audio content. As a robust, functionally complete digital audio system for broadcast radio applications, Rivendell uses industry standard components like the GNU/Linux Operating System, the AudioScience HPI Driver Architecture and the MySQL Database Engine. Rivendell is being developed under the GNU Public License.

This is the first production release of Rivendell 2.x. All changes made since 2.0.0rc1 have involved fixes for reported bugs and improved integration with various distributions and desktop environments. See the ChangeLog for specifics.

  • A complete GPL'ed radio automation system.
  • Designed for efficient on-air use, with large, touchscreen-friendly controls.
  • Up to three full automation logs may be operated from a single computer.
  • Extensive support for live assist environments, with multiple SoundPanel arrays available at the touch of a finger.
  • All configuration is done by means of point and click interfaces -- *no* arcane configuration files to edit!
  • Support for both PCM16 and MPEG Layer 2 audio formats.
  • Full support for both analog and AES3 digital audio interfaces, using high-quality audio adapters manufactured by AudioScience Inc. and the JACK Audio Connection Kit.
  • Designed by radio broadcasters, for radio broadcasters.
  • Completely free and open -- no dongles, unlock codes, software keys or other arbitrary limitations.

Some of the major changes over 1.x include:

  • MPEG Capture/Playout. Rivendell can now be optionally compiled to support use of MPEG Layer 2 in the core storage library for all audio driver families (ALSA and JACK as well as AudioScience HPI).
  • Web Services Architecture. Many internal services within Rivendell are now implemented via a web services API. Among other benefits, this approach allows these services to be easily accessed by third-party systems by means of the widely support HTTP protocol.
  • Linux User Support. Any 'regular' user account can now access Rivendell; gone is the concept of a single 'Rivendell User' under which all Rivendell operations must occur.
  • Replicators. Rivendell now sports a generic replication interface that can be used to create services to transport audio and other Rivendell data to/from external systems.

    livewire native virtual gpio

The 'fully native virtual GPIO' seems very interesting, but some questions on it as the GPIO is a puzzle to many.

ASI6x85 gave 4 hits on Google, after trying ASI6 Google pics gave one result of an older card, trying some numbers ASI6585 gave the result most likely referred to. For many of us radiopeople (not so much linux or card specialists) it would be VERY usefull to have some kind of video on the setup of this. Including explanation of hardware, software setup, requirements.

In Holland on the most used Radio Forum (used by many thousands of streams, local radio stations and even national radio stations) on which many similar software packages are compared the Rivendell GPIO setup is referred to as 'no one so far succeeded in setting this up'.
