Peak Slammer is a DirectX Audio Plug-in that lets you increase the overall volume of digitized audio without clipping and with a minimum of audio artifacts.

Peak Slammer works by scaling down any peaks above a given threshold. We call this "slamming". It differs from standard compression in that instead of applying the scaling after a threshold is reached, any peak that exceeds the threshold is scaled down fro the previous zero-crossing to the next zero-crossing. Because the first zero-crossing may have already occurred before the threshold was reached, there is a half second buffer that will be noticeable if used in real-time.
