How to burn a cd from step 1

I want to learn how to burn cd's but I know nothing at all of how to download or anything. Can someone give me very detailed instructions from beginning to end. I don't know what mp3 or WAV are either. Thanks.

PS. iM WORKING ON A XP COMPUTER. i TRANSFURED SOME MUSIC ONTO CD LAST NIGHT, YET IT DOESN'T PLAY ON MY CD PLAYER, BUT IT WILL PLAY IF IT IS IN COMPUTER. I HAVE SOME BASIC CDS. IM SURE I CAN FIGURE IT OUT ON MY OWN, YET, I THINK THE PROBLEM IS THIS. FINDING A SIMPLE SIGHT THAT I CAN DOWN LOAD FROM. WITHOUT HAVING TO GO THREW BECOMING A MEMBER AND JOINING ANYTHING. I JUST WANT TO FIND THE MUSIC I LIKE AND PUSH A BUTTON OR TWO, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY FOR FREE. NO CHARGES OR CC CARDS
