This is a great article from NeedPromo.com.
Just keep in mind many people say they are connected and can get you in the door for the 'right price'... you have to discern what is the right vehicle for you, so just do your research before you shell out money to get connected.

The Truth About Getting A Record Deal.

Yes this is a long article, but it will open your eyes to what some aspiring performers will die never knowing.

I WON'T! I WON'T! I WON'T!

I won't feed your pipe dreams.
I won't encourage you to be lazy.
I won't make you believe you can walk into an audition or send a demo and get a record deal.
I won't get you excited about becoming a superstar tomorrow.

If that is what you are looking for, leave now -the truth hurts - but it will also set you free.

I WILL! I WILL! I WILL!

I will encourage you to work.
I will encourage you to be smart.
I will encourage you to be persistant and understand why it is called the music "industry" and not the music "hobby".

If you want a record deal and are still waiting around looking to get "discovered" or are looking for your big "break" then STOP LOOKING!

In the year 2005 does NOT happen! Ok well maybe it does happen, but it is rare, and there is a lot more to the stories of "chance" and "luck" then most people know.

Your odds of getting struck by lightning AND winning the lottery the same day are better than being "discovered".

By the way I live in Florida, so living in the lightning capital of the world and being involved in the music business since 1991: I have actually met two people who have been struck by lightning, but never anyone who was discovered and got a record deal.

Blame it on the economy, blame it on the president, blame it on Napster and the Internet, blame it on bootleggers, blame it on the rain, but the truth is:

You make it by CHOICE not by LUCK.

Record Deals do not fall out of the sky, just like becoming a professional sports athlete or a police officer doesn't "just happen".

Sorry to burst your bubble, but:
You will not get a record deal because of some new environment (moving to a "better" area
You will not get a record deal just by simply getting your stuff in front of the "right" person
You will not get a record deal by being in the right place at the right time
You will not get a record deal by burning a bunch of CDs and sending them to every record label whose address you can find
You will not get a record deal because you opened for XYZ artist at such and such a concert
You will not get a record deal because you were played on your local public or college radio or commercial "mix show"
You will not get a record deal because you gave your demo to someone who has a record deal

It does NOT happen outside of you.

It may seem that way, and I am sure you have heard stories of 3 or 4 artists who all they did was "meet someone who saw them at a karaoke bar and walked them into the office of so-and-so who signed them to a record deal right away. "

Bottom line, you have to be prepared and qualified before you can take advantage of any opportunity in life.

So...how DO you get a Record Deal?

Usually all it takes is for you to do some things differently, right now, right where you are.

There are basically two ways most artists get a record deal nowadays.

1. Call your uncle who is Director of A&R at a major record label and ask him to "hook you up" with a meeting with the label president (didn't you know ONLY the label's CEO makes the final decision on who is "signed"?)
2. Do a lot of shows (gigs), sell 10s of thousands of CDs on your own, get on the radio and retail charts the industry watches, and the labels will COME FIND YOU to give you a record deal!

You don't believe me?

I figured you might need more than just my word on it. So if you want to scroll to the bottom of this article and see what the record labels themselves say! Then come back and read the rest...

OK, so I exaggerated a little bit, c'mon, cut me some slack, what do you expect, I am in the entertainment business, its gotta be dramatic or else you would not still be reading this, right?

Actually, it IS possible to get "discovered" and get a record deal. But it happens rarely. Why is this so rare?

Competition. That is the bottom line. It is rare because:
EVERYBODY is in the studio
EVERYBODY says they have the next hit song
EVERYBODY feels they just need to "be heard by the right person"
EVERYBODY has a few songs on their demo already done.

You are just one of many EVERYBODY's and the other EVERYBODY's probably have more connections than you do.

If you want to know how many EVERYBODY's you are competing against visit these sites and see over 50 MILLION artists at various stages of their career and have NO record deal (www.PureVolume.com, www.MySpace.com, www.SoundClick.com)

LET's PRETEND

You are a record label. (ooh now it's getting fun!) Think of it like this, there are the EVERYBODY's who have some songs and send you demos, (or worse a link to their free website hosting some mp3s and a terrible webcam picture) and then there are the few who actually are already SELLING their own CD's. Which would you risk $500,000-$2 Million of YOUR MONEY on?

A label can take you from 10,000 to 100,000 CD sales a lot easier than they can take you from ZERO sales to 10,000. And a most major labels can't even THINK about breaking even on their investment with less than 100,000 CD sales.

Not to mention, what kind of deal do you think you will get if you bring absolutely NOTHING to the table? Let me help you answer it by asking another question.

Who gets paid more?
A) People with little education and experience and little work histroy; or
B) People with degrees and years of experience and a proven track record?

If you are bad with multiple choice - the correct answer is B!

Again, if you are "discovered", what kind of record deal do you think you would get? It definitely won't be a good one! You have no negotiating power if you are one of the FEW who get "discovered".

So then, to have power you should:
Have a professional press kit made to Record Industry Standards
Have a professional website
Get Retail & Radio Ready CDs Manufactured
Get your songs Played on the Radio
Get your CDs in Stores (Retailers & Online)
Get a lot of people to PAY you to perform
Get your songs & CDs on Major Music Charts
Build a HUGE mailing list of fans who will help you do all of the above

Of course for any of that to work, you will need to be developed.

You will need to have songs written, produced and recorded to start. But you will need to learn stage presence, some choreography and possibly vocal training. You do need to be a polished performer or group.

Let's do some numbers. Let say you are an independent artist. (oh, you already are? then this is easy!) Instead of a record deal, you decide to work towards putting out your own music. And after your expenses you make a whopping $5 per CD sold.

If you sold only 10,000 CDS -thats $50,000.

Not bad huh? Well if you sold only 10,000 CDs on a major label -i assure you, they will not do much with you even if they decide not "drop" you. (but they probably will)

So, I am trying to get you to see, your goal should not be to get a record deal. It should be to become a full-time professional working performing artist.

YOU ARE The deal

If you can do that, by doing the things above, you will have your CHOICE of record deals, and you might not even want one at that point. Hard to believe but it's true!

On this website, I will be adding articles to help you become a full-time working musician.

Thatís right the goal is to show you how to MAKE MONEY!

I want to show you how to do two main things:

1) Help you change from Amateur to Professional (amateurs pay i.e. talent shows and professionals get paid, i.e. gigs)

2) Increase your Record Deal Eligibility. (remember once you are a pro, you might not want it!)

Hereís the bottom line. Labels have deals (PLENTY OF THEM) and they are ready to make them EVERY DAY. The questions is who is eligible? Are you?

It takes more than talent, and thatís where I come in. I own an artist development company Need Promo, LLC.

We are also starting our own independent record label. We currently work for major and independent labels and help them prepare their artists for the big time.

I will be sharing what we have learned with you here on this site.

Why would I do this?

If you do not know me or never heard of me, that is a valid question. You want to know what I get out of it.

But if you did know me, you would be on my mailing list from the Need Promo site. Then you would know I have given free info to help artists for many years. As a concert promoter I invite independent artists from around the country to open for major acts all the time.

I have a heart for independent artists who are sincere and hard working. I do whatever I can to help them.

I have no patience for those who want something handed to them. I don't waste my time with slackers, users or abusers.

I want to show you a secret.

This is what makes the difference between those that "want to be" and those that ARE living their dreams. I want to help you turn your talent into a skill.

Once you are no longer considered an amateur, but a professional you will:
SELL your own CDs (a lot), and not have to give them away
Have your songs and name heard on the Radio
Get PAID to perform live (a lot)
Possibly Get Sponsors who will Pay you and/or give free products (i.e. clothes or hair)
Be seriously considered for a record deal

Its great to hear that you have been performing and getting yourself out there. As far as the type of music you sing you would have to market yourself to a specific record company that markets your style of music. If you have any specific questions you can post them on here and i will try to answer or you can email or message me here singingadvice0@yahoo.com

all these "everyone is telling me"...are they with Sony? Are they with anyone? You gotta take what is in front of you, opportunities are like a perfect day, seldom seen and pass by too quickly.
