Genelec 1237A and 1238A Three-way Smart Active Monitors

Genelec releases the 1237A and 1238A Three-way Smart Active Monitors (SAM), with built-in intelligent tuning compensation.

These new SAM monitors are designed to automatically adapt to their environment by tuning the frequency response to compensate for the acoustic room that you are working with.

The company says that the built-in DSP can also automatically align levels and apply distance compensation at the listening position, and it allows compatibility with all standard AES/EBU digital audio formats, along with classic analog signals.

Both the 1237A and 1238A monitors are based on Genelec's 1037A and 1038A speakers. They carry the same DCW (Directivity Control Waveguide) technology and cabinet design, but it adds smart DSP for improved flexibility.

To meet EU ErP Directives and to improve power efficiency, both monitors come equipped with Genelec's ISS (Intelligent Signal-Sensing technology). According to the press release, "ISS minimizes energy waste and significantly reduces power consumption when items are left in standby mode by monitoring input connectors to detect if the monitor or loudspeaker is in use. If the audio input is large enough, the product will quickly come out of the stand-by mode and continue to function. However, if the ISS circuit is not finding any audio on the input for a (user definable) period of time, ISS automatically puts the loudspeaker amplifier to a low-power sleep state where the loudspeaker will consume less than 0.5 watts of power."

These new monitors can be either freestanding or flush-mounted. The flush versions benefit from a powerful new RAM L rack-mount amplifier that can also be removed from the loudspeaker cabinet when the monitor is flush mounted.

The new Genelec 1237A monitor has a 12" bass driver, a 1" metal dome tweeter and a 5" midrange driver. Both the mids and highs are mounted in the company's proprietary Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW), designed to reproduce flat frequency response and a wider sweet spot. Each of the three drive units come with their dedicated amplifier module, 250W for the mid-range, 500W for the bass driver and 200W for the tweeter. The frequency response runs from 37Hz up to 20 kHz +/- 2.5dB. Real world peak level is measured at 122dB at 2m distance.

The new Genelec 1238A is the bigger speaker, with a 15" bass driver, 5" mid-range driver and a 1" metal dome tweeter. It follows the same design features as the smaller 1237A, including the proprietary DCW technology. The woofer amplifier is rated 500W, while the midrange speaker has a 250W amp. Finally, the high-frequency driver has a 200W amplifier. Frequency response is 35Hz to 21kHz +/- 2.5 dB. Studio conditions are said to produce peak levels of 124dB at 2m distance.

The new Genelec 1237A has an MSRP price of $7,595, while the Genelec 1238A speaker is priced at $10,900. For more information and other details, visit Genelec.
