Re: soundcards and h/ware

Sound quality from a soundblaster is OK until you've been using it for a long time, then u notice problems filtering through. Get a full duplex soundcard with a breakout box keeping your analogue electronics away from your noisy digital hardware. Digital hardware is often badly designed from a producing analogue noise perspective due to the fact it doesn't suffer from the noise itself. If you are not recording at all but are only rendering sounds on the computer, then any later soundblaster will do and get a CD burner. This means that your music will never see the analogue domain and therefore never get coloured. Can't be bothered to write any mor..

Re: soundcards and h/ware

: Hi all - could someone give me some advice on what soundcard i should think about buying for the purposes of producing music on my pc? are there any available which, with the right software, are capable of producing professional results (soundblaster live?) without additional hardware (samplers, effects, compressors etc)? what kind of machine would i need for this (ram, disk etc etc).....thanks,

Hi!
You can try this setup:
1. PII/pIII (according to your budget) with maximum RAM and maximum hard drive (according to your budget again). Second hdd you can always add later.
2. Zip drive 100mb usb/parallel interface or 250mb parallel for distributing your songs.
3. CD Burner
4. Soundblaster Live!
5. MIDI keyboard
6. Sonic Foundry ACID PRO 2.0
7. Cakewalk Pro
8. SurReal from seer systems (to operate with soundfonts)
9. ReBirth (software synth if you in for techno and other effects)
10. ReCycle (to create soundfonts out of audio (WAV) drum loops.
11. Sonic Foundry Acoustic Mirror or CD architect to get help with burning CD's at pro level
12. Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 4.5 (or Sound Fourge XP 4.5 for budget reasons)to work with the sound.
13. Decent speakers and headphones.

All of the above I tried on my computer and it works fine together w/o conflicts and produces very quality sound.

Re: soundcards and h/ware

Hi,

I have recently gone thru all sorts of contortions to get my system tweaked and I still do not know if it is at a best performance level. I recommend you to buy the fastest (MHZ) Pentium II or III (according to your budget). This will obviously increase performance etc... You need at least one large drive of 4GB. Better is two hard drives - one for your OS and the other for your application. Try and avoid 3d FX cards with onboard ventilators - they add extra hum to the recording. The soundcard must be capable of full duplexing to allow recording and playback simultaneously. Do not buy a Creative Lab AWE card - they have nice sampling sounds but only have limited duplexing. Go for a Creative Live 1024. Finally, remember the purpose of the computer is to record songs on - try and avoid making it a file-server, CD-Burner, Scanner etc. Any additional card of device could also cause internal disturbances (noise - as mine do). A good test is to record nothing - remove all micros from the computer and attempt to
record fresh air. Playback the wave file and if you hear humming or unexplaned noises or humming then the nightmare begins...

Software is difficult to judge as there are so many applications. I like Cubase as it is well tested and does the job across the board - however it is hardware specific and purists would say it runs best with an ASIO Soundcard which generally start around the $500 price. Cakewalk is possibly better for audio recording (I am a guitarist, not a keyboard programmer...) etc... and uses an internal Windows OS pipe to shuffle sound data around. This means you can uses a "normal" full-duplexing sound card instead of an expensive one - and it sounds great too!

What software to make WAV's sound better?

I d/led some b-side and unreleased mp3s from my favorite band, but some of the recodrings are BAD. Is there any software (besides the Noise Reduction one mentioned above) that will help?

Not really - the old technical saying in music is...
"shit in - shit out"

Maybe I can rephrase this....

Best Software for My Needs

Hi. I'm a composer, but I'm new to composition software and I need advice.

I have a Yamaha Clavinova (MIDI) and a PC (Gateway Solo 9300; Windows; Pentium III + plenty of memory and diskspace + docking station)
and I need a good suite of music composition & notation tools.
Specifically, I want to:
1). improvise at the keyboard and have it notated
2). add a vocal line + words
3). get professional-looking printout

I have tried looking at the demos on your webpage but cannot download them, for some reason.

I'd appreciate recommendations of the best package(s) for my needs.

Thanks!

Re: Best Software for My Needs

Hi!

There are several products on the market. The best ones are Cubase and Cakewalk. Both offer excellent recording / midi & notational options. However, the full Studio Software is expensive. You should maybe visit both sites to see their "slimmed down" versions which cover exactly your needs. Also consider future projects you may want to get in to before you purchase anything - do not buy too slimmed down! There are also a few "cheaper" programs like "Musik Maker" etc. which also offers the things you are looking for.

Cakewalk as touchy with Soundcards as Cubase?

Hi,

I am evaluating both Cubase & Cakewalk. I have a real simple 1xMIDI drum and want lots of Audio tracks. I have a Creative AWE 64 and have been informed that this card is not recomended by Cubase due to full duplexing issues.
However, Soundcards are not mentioned by Cakewalk at all. Surely my soundcard will have the same limitations in Cakewalk or does Cakewalk get round this like the program "SAW32 Plus" does?

I would hate to replace a perfectly working & sounding card if it is not necessary in Cakewalk.

Regards - Brett

Re: Cakewalk as touchy with Soundcards as Cubase?

: Hi,

I don't know enough about the AWE to be specific.., but I can tell you without any doubts that Cakewalk is more hardware-tolerant than VST. In fact Cakewalk is more suited to the PC platform, period. To illustrate this, I have a full retail copy of Cubase VST sitting in a drawer unused, while I make music with the Cake. Despite buying a soundcard that was recommended on the Steinberg website, VST never worked happily on my PC....so I went back to Cakewalk, which performs faultlessly.
No matter waht card you have, Cakeis the best for PC's. It works.

As a subject says, which plug in (DX or VST) or
stand alone software is best for reducing unwanted

WHATS BEST FOR ELECTRONIC MUSIC

What is the best program on PC for electronic music?

Re: WHATS BEST FOR ELECTRONIC MUSIC

Try the demo versions of rebirth and fruityloops. They are the most popular and are relatively easy to use.

Re: WHATS BEST FOR ELECTRONIC MUSIC

It depends on
a) what are planning to do (professional composing, production cds, remix for somebody, sound engeneering etc.)
b) how much are you willing to spend
c) what hardware (if any) you have

effjay the deejay or SOMEBODY, help with ADAPTEC EZ CD Audio

I know all about the wav, cda, mp3 stuff..so it shouldn't be that hard. It's the adaptec software. i set a track list to burn and it gets through 5 wav's and stops gives me an error msg, and closes the track, usesless 5 track CD. So, I go into the properties before burning and say leave it open, it burns up to 6 now, then errors out. How do I burn the rest on there now? It shows it's an empty CD and the software help mentions NOTHING about how-to CONTinUE burning to the CD either after an error or just if you wanted to. ANy help would be appreciated, since I haven't found ANYTHING that approaches this on tons of news groups.

SAW

Anyone have recommendations for SAW 32 Lite?? I found it for $287 at http://www.audiotracks.com/software.htm but want to get some feedback before I buy. I used to hear about this program alot a few years ago but nothing lately.

Re: SAW

Hi Stan!

I have SAW32 PLUS and it is great software. It works good on Win95/98 and they say it works even faster on WinNT.
It does not have Midi Drum editors etc... But it is really good if your mastering pure Audio tracks. Also you do
not need to watch out too much with your hardware - as you do with Cubase. It will work with almost any soundcard.
And, VST plugins now work with the latest version too.
I use Cakewalk for my Midi & Audio recording, but I also often use SAW for validating tracks and editing.

Their address is "http://www.iqsoft.com"

Cakewalk Guitar Tracks

I just got Guitar Tracks, and I am running a cable from my Line 6 XL amp line out to the line in on my soundblaster AWE 64. It seems that I can record one track fine, but when I try to record another track ( a second guitar part for example) even while playing along with the existing track, my guitar is out of tune with the recording, and even worse, once I play both tracks together, the second track is several seconds slower than the first track. Please help, I cant use this software if this happens all the time. Any suggestions?

Re: Cakewalk Guitar Tracks

Hi Mike,

I have a simular setup to you but I do not have your problem. (What CPU power do you have?
It sounds like you are adding effects to the track as you record it. The system is overloaded trying to give you full duplexing (playing/recording) with effects processing. Try making your "takes" dry and add effects to them afterwards. You could also save CPU processing if you use an effects unit (as an auxilary)instead of using too many Cakewalk effects.

Angel keys/ software MIDI controllers for split/layering

I would like to know if there are any other programs
similar to Angelkeys - which allows you to set split
points and layers as performance presets for
an inexpensive MIDI keyboard -
the shareware version is full of nags and
the Angelsoftware site would not accept any
of my credit cards - so I couldn't purchase and
register the program.

thanks for your help

Re: Angel keys/ software MIDI controllers for split/layering

SAME PROBLEM.
THE-MAIL IS DISCONTINUED AND THE PROGRAM IS very nice.

You can do a similar job with AuReality building block, making a control panel that split the keyboard.
