Can anyone explain/I don't mean to sound stupid but...

I don't mean to sound stupid but I play keyboards. Right now, I have a Trinity and I'm looking to add accessories to help with things like an arpeggiator, some different sounds, etc. I've worked with modules before, but never any of the software things like Nemesis, Cakewalk, Sonic Foundry, etc. can anyone explain how these would be used? Are they only used for in-studio and recording? Can they be used for live performances? Which is easiest to learn?

Re: Can anyone explain/I don't mean to sound stupid but...

I just started using Cakewalk about a month ago. It's awesome as a sequencer. You can either click in the notes you want the computer to play (using your keyboard) on a staff line or you can record a live session and the software will write it out for you. I'm new to keyboards myself but I've been writing computer music for a while now and I've learned everything I a lot about synths and MIDI through experimenting with Cakewalk in the last month. The software can certainly be used for live performances (if you're willing to lug your comp around). I set up my comp to play the sequenced background music, special effects, and drums while I have guitars and synths play live with it.

Clicks and Pops

I'm trying to record song files from my keyboard into
"Wavelab" and "n-Tracks". The files sound great, except
for these pesky "clicks' and "pops" that are not in the
source material. Where are they coming from and how
can I avoid them???

"n-Tracks" help file suggests it might have to do with
the setting for buffer size. Does that sound right???

Developers needed for multi-platform music project - game develo

Hello,

My name is Kevin. I am interested in the aid of a few programmers
willing to give up a little time each week to help along a music
related project. This project will run on various platforms, with the
same look and feel (as much as can be done based on each platforms GUI
capabilities) on each platform.

The project is mostly for MIDI initially. But plans to support audio
and video are already being looked at. Infact, the whole project will
model real-world studios, yet be configurable in an unlimited number
of ways to support all types of personalities, from home hobbyists, to
students needing tutorials, to professional studio users.

The "core" of the project is almost done. It includes a multi-platform
plugin engine, complete multi-platform messaging system for all
plugins, the engine and the executable, XML based configuration
utilities to read/write XML files to load/save configuration
preferences, and more. The Win32 version is being worked on right now,
with a complete front-end main window and menuing system in place so
plugins can add new menu items. Status and Tool bars will be
implemented soon.

I would like some developers to help start testing the plugin engine
on Win32 initially. I will be doing the port to Linux after some
plugin stuff has been thoroughly tested on Win32. I will also be doing
a Mac port and a BeOS port sometime next year or the year after.
YES..I did say "the year after" because frankly this project is a
"side" project when I have time.

I want whoever is interested to know that this is a "when you have
time" but it is also high priority for me. Its hard juggling 12 hour
days at work, family and this project, but I tend to put in 20 or so
hours a week on it. Sometimes less, sometimes more. That is the reason
for the longevity of the project. The more developers I can get in
helping out with plugins and testing of plugins, the faster it can be
up and running.

I cant pay anyone. Infact, the prorgram will be given away for free.
Plugin developers are left to decided if they want to sell plugins or
not, but the main program, complete with track editor, event editor,
piano roll, etc (figure a "basic" midi sequencer) is free on all
platforms.

Another thing this program will be for is game developers. I am hoping
the performance is good enough to allow game developers to easily
include the engine itself into their games which would add a complete
midi/audio/soundFX engine. They would merely pass the engine messages
to trigger sounds, songs, sequences, etc.

Anyways, I'll wrap this up. If you would be interested in this
project, please email me at:

i_am_linux@yahoo.com. That is my forwarding email address. I am a fan
of Linux! :)

Thanks for all that are interested.

I have a beige G3 333MHZ system with an u/wscsi2 card, 9GB LVD drive, MOTU 2408 interface, Studio 4, various midi gear. Though I have repeatedly upgraded systems due to the past encouragement of OPCODE, I still drop beats, and get crashes when I try to affect a track from the computer.
As I my frustration with Opcode is now off of the chart- since they abandoned their contact numbers and give only a message machine,-whose messages they don't answer, I need to find the next best musical system software for my Mac. Please send me any ideas of where I should begin my research for a comparable system which will work and allow me to maximize my hardware.
Thanks

It's been floating around in rumor control for over two months...plus I knew
that most of their code geeks quit five ro six weeks ago...but, now I've
seen an offical press release.

"Opcode systems, one of the oldest and most important music software
developers for the Macintosh, has suspended day-to-day operations. there's
no official word on exactly what's going to happen next, but our sources
indicate that most Opcode employees re out looking for new jobs."

From the December issue of Keyboard Magazine.

So, it appears that Gibson has killed off yet another company after
acquisition.....

Opcode's dead,but all is not lost!...Get a new "multi-tracker"!

Joseph, the source of your trouble probobly lies in Opcode/Vision dsp.Dump that piece of "bunk" and get yourself a decent multitracker.I use Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 for my Win 98 system, and Cubase VST for the Mac platform.I have an Opcode 8 port/se and a MOTU 2408 for midi and audio breakouts.Cubase is costly and has a steep learning curve.Cakewalk is rock solid and fairly straightforward to use,but the only software from them for the Mac is Metro,of which I know nothing about.

BBBBB PPPPPP MMMMMM C O U N T E R ? ? ?

Is there a quicker way of calculating accurate (to
hundreds of seconds) BPM's of WAVs or MP3s, than to use
Soundforge 4.5C?

I heard there's a magic program which can work out a CD
full of mp3's without opening them (!) but find that
hard to believe :)

Anybody else into mixing MP3s/WAVs with Soundforge/Acid?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers,
Nick

Have you checked the BPM Counters on this site? You'll find them at <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/MUSIC_CALCULATORS/">http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/cat/MUSIC_CALCULATORS/</a>

how the hell do you get the bpm with sound forge?

HELP finding computer scoring/writing program

I have no keyboard yet, or any other MIDI equipment. Just my computer. I don't know what an mp3 or wave file is. This computer stuff is a foreign language to me. But I know music, and need to write all that's pouring out of me. I've used our Finale program at school. I'm wondering what other similar programs are available, ones that I can use to write with just a computer. I'm also wondering what's available for download, preferably free, or cheap, from Shareware. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

SOFTWARE NEEDED

I NEED A CUSTOM MADE SOFTWARE PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES ALL DOCUMENTS FROM: ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, AND ANYTHING IN RELEVANCE TO COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITING AND AFM CONTRACTS FOR SELF BOOKING..A TOTAL ADMINSTRATIVE PROGRAM. WITH A LINK OR ADMINSTRATIVE TO LIBRARY OF CONGRESS FOR COPYRIGHT EXPEDITION. ALSO IS THERE AN ADMINSTRATIVE THING THAT IS AN ADD ON TO ANY OF THE STUDIO SOFTWARE THINGS YOU HAVE FOR SALE HERE?

Ah! A musician!

There are many scorewriting programs. I believe that is what you are looking for. One that might be quite useful to you in a program called Melody Assistant. You compose in score and it comes with a soundset so you can here what you are composing. It's not the greatest thing on earth, but it's very cheap! $15 US

After you familiarise yourself with the different ways you can compose etc. on a computer you'll be looking for something more advanced, but I reckon this one could give you a great start.

You can find it in the shareware archives. It's probably not as easy to use as Finale though.

Hope this helps. E-mail me directly if you have any problems.

Regards,
Caleb

Re: HELP finding computer scoring/writing program

Hi,
I'm looking for a program on the computer to download. Simply a program that allows me to write music on a music staff sheet, and simply hear what I wrote.

Software for converting high quality mp3 to low quality?

I want to convert 256 kbps to 128 kbps. Anyone know of a program to do this? I don't have the CD, so I can't just re-rip the song at a lower sample rate.

Thanks.

Re: Software for converting high quality mp3 to low quality?

just decode them back to pcm and then re encode them with audiocatalyst or similar.
or use something like soundforge batch convertor

Isn't there a more direct route???? I've thought of doing that already.

Thanks, though. Anyone else have suggestions?

Roland VS1680 Users

Hi, We are looking for other VS 1680 users. We've been using one for about 18 months, and have discovered a few neat tricks. for example, installing a 10Gig hard drive rather than messing around with Jaz or Zip drives. However, I'm sure there are others out there who've found some neat tricks of there own. I'd love to hear them, or share any solutions we've found to others problems

Re: Roland VS1680 Users

I am a new user to the Roland VS1680. It was working as expected when suddenly it froze. I rebooted and now the internal drive is not being recognized. The external CD burner is recognized but I get an indication that the internal drive 'switch' is set to off. How do I get the internal drive to be recognized on booting up? I am really stuck! Please reply soon if you might now how to remedy this.

Re: Roland VS1680 Users-the mastering process

Hi I am thinking of starting up a professional studio to record local bands. I have had a vs1680 for a good few years now and I fairly ofey with the basics. However, any advice on the mastering side of producing professional quality CDs would be greatly appreciated- i.e. equipment needed, where to start ECT.
Cheers
Andrew

Is the vs1680 PRO or SEMI-PRO equipment?

Hello, My name is A.J.

Does the 1680 have the actual ability of producing a professional, industry standard recording or is it just a semi-professional piece of gear that costs a little bit more than a cheap 4 track?
I've had the 1680 for almost 2 years and have come up with some decent recordings. My problem is that when I compare them to professional recordings that are out in stores, my recordings sound substantially lower in level even when the peak meter has reached its max. just before distorting.
Is there a professional cd that has been recorded with the 1680. if so, I'd like to hear it. If the problem is my recording technique, then I need HELP. If the problem is my equipment I need to UPGRADE.
Your replies are truly appreciated.

Re: Is the vs1680 PRO or SEMI-PRO equipment?

Hi AJ,

Michael Charles uses a vs1680 for all his recent recordings and he's a grammy winner. He's been in the business for 30 years. There's some sound samples (mp3s) at:
www.moonlightlabel.com, and you can purchase his CDs there too.
As far as levels are concerned I think you need to have your music 'mastered' no matter what recording system you use. That's what Michael does. It takes a special mastering machine to do this. I know a great studio that does this inexpensively.

Re: Roland VS1680 Users

Hi

I also own a VS1680 and what a great piece of kit it is too. However it DOES take a while to learn how to make full use of it. I'm still learning! As a point of interest, the band I'm in exclusively uses the VS1680 to record our material and you'll soon be able to hear our work at www.zerotext.co.uk
This may give you some idea of what the Roland is capable of.

In the meantime, I'm happy to try and help with anything to do with the VS1680- and I'm always looking for tips myself!
