Should I dither after Normalizing?

I heard that after changing the volume of a wave file you should always dither before going to cd. So, if I'm normalizing 16 bit files in Sound Forge XP, should I get software that has dithering functions? Is there any freeware software that does this. Or, even better a freeware VST Plug-in that dithers?

You have only to dither if your sample rate is
higher than 44.1kHz (CD-Quality).
That's the only case !!
There's no need to dither if you have another
bitrate than 16bit.

How come when I record something playing on my computer, the wav

I'm using a cheap tape recorder which I have a cord going from its headphone jack to the mic jack of the computer, and it sounds pretty decent playing out of the recorder AND playing on the computer, but once its recorded it sounds really bad, very buzzy and overall it sounds like shit. I tried 8 bit, 16 bit, mono, stereo, all of the different htz but nothing made it sound better. Messing with the EQs helped, but very little. I tried recording it in Sound REcorder and in Goldwave but it still sucked. Can someone help me out with a setup that would sound good?

RE:
Don't plug the tape recorder into the 'MIC.' jack on the computer, Plug it in 'Line-In'.
That should solve the problem. -Dorian Blues

Re: How come when I record something playing on my computer, the

ANything you're running out of a "headphone jack" will be amplified (slightly). The mic jack on your SC will also amplify the signal. This is going to cause a lot of distortion. If possible, use the line-outs on the deck and the line ins on your SC. Also Windows sound recorder isn't going to give you a clean wav. A cheap shareware prog will probably be a big improvement.

Software to convert chord symbols to midi accompaniment

I play the clarinet. Some of the sheet music I have shows the full clarinet notation, but just gives chord sybols for the piano/guitar accompaniment eg C C+ G7 G11 etc.

Does anyone know of a program where I can enter the time signature, key and chord symbols and which will use these to produce a suitable accompaniment in midi format.

Re: Software to convert chord symbols to midi accompaniment

Check out
www.musedit.com

It will let you enter chord symbols and then transcribe them into bass/treble. It also can play the notation back as MIDI which will give you the accompaniment.

Re: Software to convert chord symbols to midi accompaniment

I have downloaded the demo version of musedit and it does, as you say, convert the chord symbols into chords, which I can then export as a midi file.

Ideally, I would like to create an accompaniment which is based on the chord notes, rather than the chord itself, rather in the way that most electric keyboards allow you to select a style of accompaniment, which you can then vary by pressing down single notes at the start of each bar. Do you know of any software which will do this?

midi setup trashed

I installed some new software on my computer (Win 95) yesterday (demo versions of Beat 2000, Cakewalk Express 3.02 and Cakewalk Pro Audio 8). Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 caused a system crash and now I can't get any sound out of my system, either from the Microsoft CD player or from programs which play midi files. I have uninstalled the Beat 2000 and Cakewalk programs, but this has not solved the problem. Removing and reinstalling the soundcard driver did not work either.

I would be grateful for any suggestions as to how to fix the problem.

Re: midi setup trashed

: I installed some new software on my computer (Win 95) yesterday ... and now I can't get any sound out of my system.

: Problem now solved. The speaker got disconnected when I was moving everything around! Now reconnected and everything works fine.

music to mp3(not wave files)

hi
i have recorded some music and i would like to turn it into a file that will be easy to send and download on the internet the song is recorde in wave format useing a program called musiccentre by data becker but as a saved file it isnt wave but a sequence. if this is not possible could you tell me of another way to record my work and download

thanx mick

Re: music to mp3(not wave files)

it should be easy to get a software to record
wave-files. nearly every soundcard comes with
such a software. or look around at hitsquad,
there a several programs to do that job. (just
download a wave-editor)
to convert a wave-file to MP3 you need a MP3-
encoder. go to www.mp3.com, you'll find
something there.

if something doesn't work, send an email.

PCI vs ISA soundcards

I have a SB-PCI128 and an AWE64(ISA) running on the same machine. Pentium2 400mhz, WIN98. Trying to get them to work at the same time, with ACID Pro outputting on one and AudioMulch or Massiva or N-Track on the other produces some unacceptable clipping, which then leads to lockup.. I've tried changing around the IRQs to make sure there's no conflicts, and although WIN98 tells me all's well, it's still a no-go.. Is there any fundamental reason I can't use an ISA and PCI simultaneously, or is it the software?

My guess is it's the software. There shouldn't be any inherent probs in running an ISA card and a PCI one.
Would you be interested in sharing ACID tips ? I've got it down pretty well , but I'm a bit mystified by the stretch markers, and also the Virtual MIDI router

Re: PCI vs ISA soundcards

I think it is a drivers problem.
Creative has designed them with the idea that they
are the only soundcard of the system.
The hardware has no problem but the drivers seem
to be using the same, not configurable, windows resources.
I have failed to use 2 128 PCI in the same PC and
Creative told me that it is possible but they are not willing
to provide any more help.
They have to sell the expensive ones two you see.

Edu Software beware

ANy educators out there. Do not buy "Menlo the Frog" they have gone
out of business. There is no tech support available. And no one will
own up to who owes what. ANy persons with info please post.

Any body know what the fucking best best audio card iout there (

Hi

Thanks for replying man cool.

Yeah im looking to buy a audio card so i can start up a PC home studio and stuff.

Im looking to spend about 500 uk pounds thats like 1000 $ right any how i have heard for that kind of moneys i could be looking at a really wild muilt functional card midi etc.

Looking at making some garage house/ used to Dj a while back on radio etc.

Any ideas , hope i don't start a argument here he he

Re: Any body know what the fucking best best audio card iout the

If you want a complete high-end studio-card
with more features you can imagine,
buy the Creamware PULSAR:
I've never seen and heard such a great
sound !!!
Card includes:
Synthesizer, MODULAR-Synth, Sample-Player,
DSP-Effects, Mixing, Automation, 20 I/O at 24bit 96kHz,
All possiple COAX and optical I/O.....
My opinion: Why to buy lots of expensive
software when you can get a soundcard
that makes all for you ??

Re: Any body know what the fucking best best audio card iout the

Well, what exactly do you want to do?
There are alot ou there with many features.
How many Analog in-outs you need?
Do you need a synth included?
Any need for ASIO 2.0 drivers (zero latency)?
Write more-your request is chaotic.

Re: Any body know what the fucking best best audio card iout the

Midiman 2044 is cheap and reliable.
Event Darla or Gina is in my opinion the best all round cards for Pc vst type of set up.

take it easy bro!

I want to put MP3's or Streaming on my web site.

I want to put MP3's or Streaming on my bands web site. I can put normal wave files on it but whether using WS ftp or CuteFTP they wont allow me to transfer MP3s.

I would be eternally grateful if anyone could give me some advice on how to add audio the best way and to make it as hassle free as possible for people logging on to my site.

Thanks a lot
