You can use RioPort (www.rioport.com). It's a terrible program but it will let you download stuff to your Rio. I don't know how to get the software that comes with the Rio to work on anything other than Windows 95. I send lots of mail to diamond about this and received terse replies that it is not supported.

Soundcard problem or pc-180 roland controller

I'm wondering if anyone could help me out , I have a
soundscape elite soundcard and use a roland-180 midi
controller: My problem is when I play the select sounds
using my pc-180 they change or go into a loop. The patch name of the selected sound is the same but something seems to change the sound within the soundcard.

IBM Aptiva - Output splitter - Is it safe?

I would like to use headphones when recording music to CD so that I can get the full effect of changes made to the sound. However, I would rather not keep unplugging the computer speakers to plug in the headphones as I think it might damage the soundcard (i've already had one replaced). I'm wondering if it would be safer to use a mini-headphone splitter to plug in both the headphones and the speakers at the same time. It certainly would be more convienent, but I don't want to damage my system (IBM Aptiva 2170-190). Also, do you think is OK to plug one of those outputs into my stereo reciever input (if so which one - tape, phono, vcr) so I can hear music through headphones or my stereo speakers?

Re: IBM Aptiva - Output splitter - Is it safe?

---> It will be perfectly safe, but you should be careful with your voolue levels. as for the input on your reciever, it doesn't matter at all.. just do not use the PHONO input. All the other ones should be exactly the same.

A splitter will be perfectly safe.

To output to a stereo reciever, choose an aux or tape in and be careful of the volume.

Most sound cards will have a flat (unamplified output - most computer speakers have their own built in amps), but be careful anyway.

Once you down load the mp3 file in to your computer its still a mp3 compression file ,encoders are not designed to convert a mp3 to cda file ,if it was that easy I wouldn't have seen about a 100 people trying to figure it out ! you cant convert a mp3 to a wave file once its in your computer ,without a special program , I've got CD copier Direct and CD Easy Creator and Audio catalyst and I still don't have a program that will do the conversion ! thats why I came to this site in the first place ! nice try though !

Should I buy a MAC?

I am really getting into music and synth sequencing and composing. Right now, I am fooling around with MIDI, Software synths, and I've always been good at using programs like CoolEdit Pro, and SoundForge and stuff.

When it comes to graphics, there is only 1 choice: NT. NO mac can top NT's superb Graphics use, and I aint talking about some crap ass program like Bryce or Poser, Im talking 3d Studio Max, Softimage, Maya, etc. 2D editing is good too, but sometimes I get weary of the dreadful windows look.

So, when it comes to just pure 2d work, mostly Photoshop stuff, and HTML work, I would think that a PowerMac would handle the job nicely right? I really hate having to jumble all of my applications, from Audio, to Music composition to graphics work to gaming to surfing the net all on 1 system. Its too much and too cumbersome.

I am saving up and plan to build a NT-Only workstation, dual CPUs, a REAL 3d OpenGL card (3dLabs Oxygen VX1 is what I want), and most likely SCSI drives. This will only be pretty much for development, mostly Graphics stuff and occasional programming (whenever I start learning HOW to program).

I also plan on upgrading my current system, and it will only be used to play games. As much as I hate Windows, it rocks when it comes to gaming really, so I have no real choice. However, there are a few audio programs that work only for W98, and not NT or Mac, so I'll do occasional stuff for that on the W98 box.

But for Music and Audio compostion, I definetly want a different system altogether. I figure, Macs are very popular when it comes to this. I mean, KMFDM, Front line Assembly etc, primarily use Macs to create their music, and thats what got me thinking, considering to even get a mac.

Now, I HATE apple, I HATE apple hippie's that think they are so much better than PC users, I HATE Apple's "we get picked on so much" attitude, it sickens me. But I aint no Microsoft lover either. Personally, I think MS is a joke. Sick of their attitude, their mentality, and lets face it, W98 sucks balls. BOTH sides of the Mac/Windows war need to grow up.

NT is great for graphics, but no USB support? Jesus christ, after 6 service packs, NO USB? PLease. No excuse. I dont care if you say "well they would have to rewrite the OS". MS is the biggest company in the world, and they should have included USB ages ago. But it IS very stable and fast.

W98 is a pile shit, and I wont accept any argument on this. Its slow, clunky, totally unreliable, and it pisses me off. I only use it for gaming, some audio work, and surfing. Thats it.

Anyway, enough of my rant. I wanna escape the Windows enviornment. linux is great, and when I get my new harddrives, I look forward to getting back into it, but lets face it, when it comes to Audio work, its HORRIBLE. Barely supports anything out there.

So, is the Mac the right choice? I wanna do audio work, composition, and occasional Photoshop and HTML stuff, and thats about it. Should I heavily consider this, or look elsewhere? Oh yeah, and does the PowerMac have a good soundcard, Full duplex, and equal or better than my SBlive Value?

Also, I dont plan on getting more than 1 monitor. I am getting a 21" monitor, so can I hook up a Mac, NT box, and a W98 box on the same monitor, via an adapter or switcher?

Re: Should I buy a MAC?

: yes you should

---> No you shouldn't,.. actually, it's a matter of opinion, Mac arguably has better sound , however, less software is compatible with Macs, as compared to PC's

Re: Sound I buy a MAC? NO!!!!

Screw the mac. I'm also a musician and have seen the pros and cons of both sides, and there is absolutely no benefit of a mac over a pc in any situation. Especially not audio. . .

Have you ever heard of reason? It's made by propellerhead software, and it is by far the best audio software I've seen. Think of this. . . you can click and drag cables from the back of virtual devices on your screen, such as effects boxes, samplers, mixers, synths, and some other nifty stuff they've got in there. It's full blow midi, so it can easily be controlled from your keyboard/workstation or other fancy device you might have. If you've already made the mistake of buying a useless mac, then they have a mac version of the software you can use. Linux version should be out by the end of the month according to their web site. Anyway, what I would do if I were you is get yourself a nice fast machine, and a midi/audio breakout box. Or atleast a sound card with digital fiber optic out. As you probably already know, internal sound cards are crap. The breakout boxes by midiman I hear are very nice.

Re: Should I buy a MAC?

: : yes you should

: ---> No you shouldn't,.. actually, it's a matter of opinion, Mac arguably has better sound , however, less software is compatible with Macs, as compared to PC's

:: yes you should. The PCs have more software, but when you "separate the wheat from the chaff" you will see that the that the best software is available for both platforms.

Where can i find Radium Mods??

Does anyone know where i can find Radium Mods for Rebirth?

aac to wav or cd-da conversion

Can anyone tell me if there is any software available to convert from aac
to a wav or cd da format. Specifically music now being played on a2b. I would

What would happen if........

What happenes if i burn my MP3's onto a CD-R disk? i always loose my MP3's when i put them onto a CD-RW disk. i want to try and put them on a CD-R but i do not want to waste a disk. has anyone tried this?

Drum Sequencer software?

I wanna a program that is able to produce constant, looping drum sequences, alot like Fruity Loops or Rebirth, but instead of using the built in sounds, like the 808,909 techo stuff, I want to use my own samples, preferably from GigaSampler or Reality synth or even from SoundFonts.

I always mess up trying to play a drum track live, cuz the time and beat measures are always off. I need something very accurate that I can map in, and export the final result in a wav file. Anyone know how this can be done, or can it be done within using ReBirth 2 or FruityLoops or HammerHead?

Re: Drum Sequencer software?

Well. if you are using rebirth rb 338 2.o, not sure on other versions ... but you have the Rebirth Modpacker, which is a bit strange to get used to but once you do, if you have some nice clean samples you can create customized Mods. With hammerhead, you can use the userbank creator to create custom hubs. Other than that, I have tinkered with lots of drum utilities and these are really the most intuitive, A company called D Lusion makes a program called Drum Station which seems fairly decent, and you can use it with your own samples. Also, the a program called SoftStep that has useless default samples but I believe you can load your own samples. hope this info is useful.

Re: Drum Sequencer software?

BioDrummer will do what you need. You can download a free demo from: www.triptoys.com/BioDrummerDemoSetup.exe

hammerhead has an optional userbank creator with it. all you need to do is format your samples as RAW files and import them.

Structured Audio Orchestra Language

I hereby would like to invite anyone to visit the SAOL User Page
(http://studio147.nl.eu.org/saol) and help the database grow by sending in
sounds, compositions and ideas.

SAOL is a new laguage to create sound, in the style of Csound, and is part
of the new MPEG-4 standard, where it's known as Structured Audio. You can
generate every sound you can imagine, control it realtime with midi and very
interesting: the mp4-files it generates are *very* small (because you only
edit 2 textfiles) yet they sound exactly the same everywhere you play it
(16bit 44100kHz, or higher if you prefer).

Structured Audio WILL be the new standard, so if you're interested: read
more on http://studio147.nl.eu.org/saol
