i always use soundforge 4.5c..... with it's built in batch converter you can convert from one format to another whether it be 1 or several hundred audi files..

I am painfully new at this.. but..never underestimate the obvious.. are your speakers plugged in the back of your computer?
If they are in the phone jack at the front it will only work for your cd player

Here- remember this. The only sure way to controll your Midi sound destination is to go to Control panel/Multimedia properties/Playback- then go to MIDI/Properties...there you should see your synthesizer options to choose from- pick one and re test midi sound. Also download the Media Rack from Willowpond.com- this will allow you to controll all sound funtions from a stereo like interface (I drag a shortcut to my quicklaunch on taskbar) ..so that I can adjust sound- or microphone properties on the fly when Im videoconfrencing yada yada. See- on the controll panel/ multimedia/Midi/single Instrument tab....you may have what's called a Mpu 401 connector or similar selected as preffered device--you simply need to change it to what ever wave table synth. option is there. That should do it. Then dowload the media rack (free).

check your mixer settings and make sure that midi is selected. (i.e. double click speaker icon on task bar to get mixer settings)

Mic signal is too low compared to recording noise

I try to find a software to pre amplify my microphone. I would like to have a big input because the hsss noise is too high compared to what I record. I don't want to buy hardware.

which soundcard do you use to record?

if you're using a common soundcard (e.g.soundblaster)
you can't do anything with software 'cause the card itself
makes white noise added to the incoming signals'
noise. you have 2 choices:
- use a professional soundcard (like audiowerk2)
or
- record the mic-signal with noise and filter it
out per software.

if anyone has found a better way let me know...

Fostex and .wav

Would anyone out there know what format the Fostex FD4 or 8 records in? I will be buying one soon, and will be recording on a Zip 250. I'd like to have .wav format in order to convert to MP3. I'm not excited about buying another storage medium.

I keep getting this message on my Digital Orchestrator
Plus, but my MIDI sound works. My Cakewalk MIDI sound
gave up the ghost, and I don't know why. According to
my device list, MIDI out is in working order, but still,
no sound. I did a defrag, but I've never heard of that
screwing up a system before.
Any ideas?

I've got two cd-rom drives one just a standard read only and one a panasonic burner 20x read 8x write.I was wondering if theres a program to mix cd's on the computer ,one that possibly has a samlper also could you give me a few names please I don't mind having to actually buy the program.

I have a Motu pc midi flyer connected to the pc I have a xp50 running into the pc flyer. Im using cakewalk pro audio8. The only sound I get back are the sounds listed under general midi. Is there a way to get the sounds from my board recorded into the program.

And if you think you've heard of all of it, I don't care if you're a college music professor, you're being naive. I know for certain that I haven't heard of everything...and as soon as I have, someone will make something else. That's part of what makes it fun and interesting, and precisely why I come here.

I've seen a lot of questons about converting vqf to mp3 across the internet. I dont have a good news for you. There is no software capableof converting vqf to mp3, although there is soft doing it in a reversed way! (I meen mp3 to vqf - try www.tucows.com to find some) It still doesnt solve the problem... I have my old vqf-s and a new brand pocket mp3 player... and nothing to load into...
I resolved that exercise in a smart way. The answer is WINAMP. Winamp supports programs called plugins (there are plenty of them at nullsoft.com). Find input pluggin that reads VQFs, and output pluggin that can create mp3. Both of them exist in couple of versions. Install them to your winamp/pluggin directory. Run them, and setup properly. In winamp push the play button. You are not going to ogtain sound... but THE OUTPUT MP3 FILE!!! The conversion is done!

This techniqe is much better than decompressing vqf to wav, and next encoding mp3. You skip the big file (wav) period, that is important when hdd space is a concern, or you gonna convert some real hours of music at one shoot. Winamp prepared in a way shown before decompresses vqf and compresses mp3 simultanously! There's no WAV moment. That is you use one program, you click less to enjoy the effect.

Be warned that conversion to mp3 always lessens the quality of sound. This is caused mostly by the poor quality of mp3 standard campared to vqf at the similar bitrate.
that's all.

you could ask at http://www.yamaha-europe.com/
for a decoder-program to convert your VQF to WAV.
then you'd be able to encode it as MP3.

a little bit more work but I don't know any other
way...
