there are two ways to do this

1. ues the audio out one the mini disk and windows recorder

2. buy a creative labs sound card with optical inputs eg creative labs live

Re: Mini disk

Uh, you may be looking for an optical port, in this case it is rather unlikeley that you will find one on your computer seeing as it is only the very new and top of the line systems that have them.
Instead try plugging a dubbing cable (double ended stereo cable) in your SPEAKER OUT jack on your computer and the MICROPHONE or LINE IN jack on your mini disk system
Hope that helps

how to record from PC to MD

Hello,

there are two ways to record Audio from computer to MD.

1. from the computer's line out to the MD's line in.

2. from the computer's optical out to the MD's optical in.

Much of the music on your computer is in MP3 format, or some other compressed format, The MD uses it's own form of data compression to allow 74 or 80 minutes of music on one disk.
Thus either way you must actually PLAY your music into the MD recorder as you would recording to a cassette tape.

Creative labs has 3 solutions, the optical digital output, or the LiveDrive (with or without a IR Remote control), both the live drives have an optical output as well as a convenient Aux IN that goes into the front of your computer (where a CD ROM would fit.)so your not always reaching behind your computer to find the connectors. Check their web page. http://www.creativelabs.com/accessories/audio/
I currently use the Soundblaster Live Platinum 5.1, which comes with the live drive, and a bunch of useful software for compiling and recording music to my MD. This soundcard, with it's software will also control my MD, starting and stopping the recorder, and also prevents other programs from running that will cause noises from occuring which ruin a recording.

one final thing to note... you can buy both an MD recorder, and an MD player, the MD player has NO record feature. Although these units are rare, they are sold by some cheesy sales people if they figure you don't know what you are looking for. Since it's really hard to find prerecorded MD's it's kinda useless, unless you have a friend that is doing all your recording. But it wouldn't be the first time
i've heard that someone has an MD player, and has no music for it.
I'm using the sony MZ-R70 which I am totaly happy with, Sony makes another unit which many of my friends have which is a bit bigger, but costs quite a bit less, but has much the same features.

mp3s or wavs to Ra

to Ra(g2) files, Thanks.

synaesthesia with a projector?

I just downloaded Synaesthesia, a program that shows pretty colour sparkles when opened with music playing.

Is there anyone who knows if it easy to link up a normal (reasonably priced) projector to the computer display so that the cool colours and stuff
can be projected onto a wall or something.

anyone?

How does it work?

Hello folks,
I'm an absolute beginner in making music by myself. I've just bought an MD8 Yahama (multitracking machine). My friend supported me with software (SoundForger 4.5, Steinberg Recycle ...). The problem is - how can I use it. I try to set up but the Computer shows me mistakes. I can't work with this massages. Further I don't know how to connect my MD8 with my Computer. I know my question is not special enough but maybe there is anyone out there who can tell me how it works. Thank you very much.

ARE THERE ANY CD PLAYERS THAT PLAY CD-RW's?

I know that most older cd players can't read CD-RW's for audio tracks. Most new ones do though.

Are there any portable cd players (Discman) that can read audio on Rewritable CD's?

thanks

Custom MIDI instruments on Mac

Hi,

I want to create a CD containing MIDI tracks of Indian instruments, and of course I don't want to use the standard GM patches.

In the Windows world, one can now create a new MIDI instrument by assigning single wave files to different keys of a given instrument|bank. This is called as DLS (downloadable sounds) and I believe it to be a new extension of the MIDI norm.

I am looking for the same feature on MacOs. Do sequencers support this feature, and if so do you have something standard, or do you handle this differently in each sequencer?

My idea would be to provide such an instrument already mapped, so that it just needs to be loaded in one's own sequencer.

I am fully ignorant of the Mac world, and therefore would greatly appreciate any help from your side.

Thanks.

Play recording back at half speed ?

I'm interested in finding software that would allow me to record from a sound source i.e. CD/ mini disc, tape via line in at the back of my Mac then be able to slow the playback down so I can transcribe drum patterns etc that are blindingly fast or complex at real speed. ANy Ideas ?

Re: Play recording back at half speed ? How about true half-spee

I capture guitar-player footage for my own use, and process it into true-pitch half-speed video (MPG format). As a transcription tool, it's second to none - provided the footage is of reasoable quality. Go to my www.princephil.free-online.co.uk/ page, `Video Chop Shop' section for details.

Re: Play recording back at half speed ?

Try `Transcribe!' - a UK-written slowdown software that I use for transcribing Leo Kottke's tunes (in particular). You can get a link to it from my Music Sites page - they offered me the chance to link to their site as a shareware reseller, and I jumped at it. Good luck ...

I just come across a software which you might take a look at. It is called "DeComposer." Go to www.digitalriver.com (MicroWarehouse). Good luck!

What's a good CDDB freeware cataloger

Hello there,

I'm after a decent CBBD prog that will let me catalog my CD collection as well as make submissions to the CDDB database (I have heaps of indie stuff). A freeware program would be great.

Help ! I need Waveset for pci64

My creative pci 64 have no waveset file , i need one ...

Re: Help ! I need Waveset for pci64

: My creative pci 64 have no waveset file , i need one ...

There are a series of MIDI wavesets on Creative's
European site--the link below will get you to the
download site for the 8-meg file.

Good luck.

Re: Help ! I need Waveset for pci64

: My creative pci 64 have no waveset file , i need one ...

Thier on the windows 98 cd.

Re: Help ! I need Waveset for pci64

Confirmed. The wavesets (.ecw) are along the Windows 98 Drivers/Audio/Esoniq path. Copy one or both files to any directory on your hard drive, then right click on the mixer on your taskbar, selecting Wavset Manager. Add new waveset, browser to either the 2mb or 4mb version, click on the checkmark to select it. Restart and you should be good to go.

How nice of Microsoft to provide it, when Creative Labs no longer keeps it on their site.

I didn't mean to post 3 times.

sorry.

mac burning software other than toast?!

Hi, I am a dj and burn mixes from minidisc to cd via our
mac g3, however when I trackmark, ie:split the file into
separate sections and then burn it onto cd, I choose a
buffer of 0 secs, but toast always puts a split second
gap between the tracks, so trying to burn a trackmarked
mix that is continuous is impossible using toast, can
someone please help and let me know what other software
I can use, preferably shareware or something because I am
not in a position to buy a $300 burning package.

Re: mac burning software other than toast?!

The crapy "Discribe" software that came with my sony burner is good for one thing only.... and that is making continuous cd's w/o pauses. I have wanted toast but don't want to spend the money. I'll trade you a copy of your software for a copy of mine. contact me at my email.

CD-R recording of personal collection Question!!!

Is it legal to record your old albums on CD-r and sell them?

Re: CD-R recording of personal collection Question!!!

: Is it legal to record your old albums on CD-r and sell them?

No. When you purchase a tape, CD, or even vinal record, (according to copyright laws)you are ONLY purchasing the RIGHT to LISTEN to the material on the physical product. If YOU are the artist RECORDED on the material (on one of the modes listed above)and own part/all of the original copyrights, you will have to contact your publisher/record company for securing any rights (mechanical lic. dept.). AGAIN, IT IS AGAINST THE LAW FOR YOU TO COPY ANY PUBLISHED MATERIAL WHATSOEVER, either for PERSONAL use (*but who would ever know unless you told them*) and/or (ESPECIALLY) for PROFIT unless you have written permission from the publisher. Alway remember that you have only purchased the right to listen to the material on the physical product and not the actual product (tape, CD, et.al.)itself. If you find any information contrary to this, PLEASE let me know! Thanks.

At least over here in Germany, you are allowed to make copies for personal use. For sure, you are not allowed to sell those. You may lend them to your friends (without money...).

Soundforge / ESI 4000 prob

Hello people,

Just got meself an EMU ESi 4000. Which'll do for now.

The problem I've got is this:

When dumping samples _from_ Soundforge (using SCSI) to the sampler, the progress bar gets to around 99% and Soundforge hangs. The sample is actually successfully transferred, but obviously closing and re-opening SF every time I wanna dump something to me sampler is a right pain in the arse.

Soundforge gets samples from the EMU no probs, it's just sending it has difficulty with.

I'm sure this is something daft n simple.

Any help greatly appreciated !

BTW - I'm running NT4, SF4.5c with an adaptec SCSI card.

Re: Soundforge / ESI 4000 prob

If that same problem occours even if you boot the EMU then the computer there might be the problem of a faulty scsi cable. ( and scsi cable are still to damn expensive, make sure its not to long, longest cable i have is 6)

Re: Soundforge / ESI 4000 prob

I have the exact same problem.
Except mine hangs after only 10 or 15 %.
I don't have the option of the esi 4000 tranfer
just the emu 64.

Re: Soundforge / ESI 4000 prob

Turn on the sampler first... then reboot your pc. Failing to do this in this order will cause that problem.

Does anyone know how I can convert MP3 files to Real Audio?

I'm trying to find a way that I can convert MP3 files into Real Audio so I can delete a lot of room on my computer. Thanks for any info.

Thomas

Re: Does anyone know how I can convert MP3 files to Real Audio?

: I'm trying to find a way that I can convert MP3 files into Real Audio so I can delete a lot of room on my computer. Thanks for any info.

: Thomas

Converting MP3 to RealAudio won't really save you any file space as both formats are highly compressed - they're just different formats.

I suspect you have 'CD quality' MP3 files which would be arround 5MB for a song. To make this smaller you have to increase the compression level which will decrease the sound quality.

You can do this by converting your MP3s to .WAV and then convert them back to MP3 or RealAudio using a much higher compression level.

For help doing this read MP3 Tutorial: Changing MP3 to WAV and then Making RealMedia files for beginners.

Re: Does anyone know how I can convert MP3 files to Real Audio?

ALthough the above information is indeed factual, and both formats are heavily compressed, it is possible to convert directly to real audio format from mpeg layer 3 files (mp3). Cool Edit, a very good sound editing program incorporates many different encoding engines and depending on the drivers for your sound card, may do what your expecting. Other than that, download any 1 of the 1000's of wav to real audio converters or download real producer, its free at real.com

Thanks and hope this has been helpful, feel free with any questions about home recording at zchasman@yahoo.com
