Mac/PC or Hardware...

Hardware recorders are reliable and computers aren't. I have a VS880 and a Macintosh G4/400 running Logic Audio and I should know! The mac is however very reliable and does what you would hope although there is no way that it is as reliable as a hardware recorder. Mainly because the hardware recorder has one job to do and comes with all the related hardware, including a seperate HD. It wont get used for the internet, word processing, video editing, gaming etc... I personally enjoy having both and I suppose the VS is being used less and less as an Audio device as I put more strain on the G4 which is coping well.

If you go the computer route then make sure that you have a decent soundcard and preferably a mixing desk and DI box for the guitar. Never put the guitar directly into your stereo or computer, it'll upset the apple cart. Chucking everything through the little Minijack input will show that they are suitable for demos and not pro-level sound quality, use them if you can live without the latter. Be careful if you go the Microsoft route, that you get a fast enough HD and that the PC's architechture is fast enough for pro level multi tracking. Not having a bash at PC's, just telling you what everyone knows about them, most of them are cheap and cheerful and come with the cheapest parts available, slowest HD etc... no two are ever the same. Be careful, you don't neccessarily get what you pay for! Don't forget to include then, the price of the computer and the price of decent peripherals, soundcards etc... and a mixing desk (it's honestly very handy but not essential, small is okay), lots of memory a large HD and of course, a more than likely expensive audio package which will give you many audio tracks with effects depending on you HD speed and Memory/Processor speed. All of these things come tailor made with a HD recorder so don't be put off, and lets not forget. You can put them under your arm and go to a friends gig, record them and mix it for them. Don't try this with the computer unless you have to!

Re: Quite a vital concern

It all comes down to how much you want to spend and what you like to use.
There are some great digital recorders out there but there is also the great world of computer music.
To plug your guitar into a computer you need to get a good sound card and an adapter for the guitar cable.

Take a look at
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Cubase5_win95/">Cubase VST</a>
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Cakewalk_Pro_Audio/">Cakewalk Pro Audio</a>

: I have an analog 4-tracks Fostex recorder, and I was about to buy a digital multitrack one. However, I found your website and I am hesitating whether it is better to buy a new PC, plus the corresponding software and (maybe) I/O hardware. My instruments are a Yamaha PSR-520 keyboard (MIDI compatible), as well as an electric guitar.
: Just 3 questions:
: 1. Is it possible to get the same kind of service from a PC-based studio than the one of a recorder console? 2. In that case, what software would you recommend to me?
: 3. Finally, how do you do to plug an electric guitar to the PC?

: Thanx a lot,
: Pedro.

The only way I know is to select (click) the barline at the end of the fourth bar, then press Enter to create a system break---and do this on each system.

Maybe there's an easier way... anybody know? It sure would be handy when making the standard four-bar-wide studio charts.

Alternative to Soundjam

I'm looking for a better way to organize classical MP3 files. I'd like to organize by composer, opus number, etc (soundjam doesn't have that option). Also I'd like more control over the playback-choose the desired spot by seconds elapsed. I'm not interested in visual "skins". Since I store files on computer I need good compression as well as good quality. Thanks

CoolEdit & DeClick

Has anyone been able to get DeClick (by Michael Paar) to find and install into CoolEdit 2000?

I can get it to find and install into CoolEdit 96 but not CE2K!!

Re: CoolEdit & DeClick

Hi,

Basically, DeClick is meant for Cool Edit 96 and not 2000. Bear in mind that Syntrillium have moved onto Cool Edit 2000 before you asked yourself too many questions. I'm a big fan of CEY2K and recommend it wholeheartedly.

Problem playing 2 sound sources (OS Win98)

Soundcards on Intel motherbord 815 can't play from two sources at the same time (for example playing WinAMP and talking over Internet Phone).
On the motherboard Intel BX with SB128 (PCI card) everything is perfect. We have disabled onboard SB128 on 815 and did the test with SB128 - problem remains.

Need help! Please.

Napster question: "No Files Shared"

How can a person have "no files shared" when hotlisted, while I'm downloading a file from him at that point?

Re: Napster question: "No Files Shared"

simpole that is his only file he has one mp3 known
to napster i bet he move his mp3s to another file
slik isent it

Re: Napster question: "No Files Shared"

take a look at the "user information" dialogue - if it says version beta2 or whatever, he hasn't any files shared,
if it says "unknown" he got a mac, linux or beos version of napster which does not have the hotlist feature!

rebirth

can anyone tell me if the rebirth program is worth buying?

Re: rebirth

: can anyone tell me if the rebirth program is worth buying?

If you love beautiful graphical interfaces, Rebirth is great.
If you don't mind some coding, try Jeskola Buzz. It can do everything you can do with RB and A LOT MORE!
Ah, and it's freeware.

Help with my video recorder

What do I need to hook my video camrecorder to my PC?

That depends.

You would need to know what the outputs from the video camera are first. If it's a standard composite video output then you will need a input of the same on the PC. The problem arises that your PC will then be expected to process 24 frames a second or more in full screen from an analogue source which will require some decent hardware. There are quite a few PCI video capture cards for this purpose on the market but maybe expensive, check they do what you want. These will be able to decode the analogue source material to digital very quickly and should provide you with a video output so you can pipe the result back into your video camera.

If your video camera has a Firewire (IEEE1394) output (Mini DV cameras etc...) then you could find yourself the Apple designed interface on a PCI card somewhere. I suspect these are available and should be noted they are standard on all New Macintoshes. This will allow piping of full screen/colour digital video onto your HD. The problem may arise that your camera doesn't have a Firewire (IEEE1394) input which may mean you will have to have another way of getting the video out of the PC. If you have a Video output from the camera and a Video Input into the computer then you can connect with a standard RCA lead but make sure it's good quality as there is a lot of information to pass through!

Good Luck

dj

I'm in need of a program that will allow me to burn to cd as I mix on two turntables for up to 1 hour.

Re: dj I NEED A NAME TITLE

HI, I NEED HELP GETTING SET UP WITH A DJ'S
NAME. THANKS

Re: dj

Cool Edit can handle up to a gig of streamed in audio per application open. This will give you about 90 minutes at 44.1htz in stereo.

Re: dj

Just record it into your pc with Windows Sound Recorder. You already have it.

upload mp3

I'm in dire need of a program or software that I can load onto my computer from a portable mp3 player also a mini disc player. Then be able to burn straight to cd. Urgent as have a deadline to meet.

Re: upload mp3

: I'm in dire need of a program or software that I can load onto my computer from a portable mp3 player also a mini disc player. Then be able to burn straight to cd. Urgent as have a deadline to meet.

Well, I don't know about methods for exporting from the portable mp3 player to the computer (of course, you can always use any audio recorder for an analog transfer).
But one good program for burning cd's with either mp3 or wav files is "Media Jukebox". It's freeware and I think you can find it here, in hitsquad.

I'm not sure you can convert mp3 to wav on winamp, but I know you can with MusicMatch Jukebox. I do it all the time.

DR5tool

Couldn't load DR5tool. Screen said to pick nearest location with only one listed, USA. I hit load but the window disappears after a few seconds. Then I hit the button for failure to load and I get a screen that says program is here(here is in blue letters). That is as far as I get.

Re: DR5tool

Hello Tom,

We will track down the DR5 tool for you and email you with details of where you can download it.

Warm regards
Geoff
