how do i compress mp3 files?

I need to know how to compress mp3 files into a really small format so i can save them on a floppy. Any advice is appreciated.

Re: how do i compress mp3 files?

MP3s are already compressed. The only thing I can think of is Zip.

Re: how do i compress mp3 files?

I hear of cd's that hold several dozen songs in MP3 format. How is this done. Or is this a confusion between cd-r and a dedicated MP3 player??

how do i compress mp3 files so that i can hold more songs on my mp3 player?
do i need some sort of program

Re: how do i compress mp3 files?

Ukelele Al is right. Even "zipping" MP3s will not reduce their size as they are already so compressed. Maybe 'Spanning' the ZIP file over several floppy disks (with WinZip) will give you some more flexibilty.

what is 'spanning'?

Re: how do i compress mp3 files?

In WinZip (i dont know about others), when you are saving the ZIP file directly to a floppy disk, there
is an option to 'span' across multiple disks; meaning you can spread ONE zip file across several disks
if it is too big just to fit on the one floppy.

external devices

do i need any external devices to use most of the software besides an instrument & cables?

Re: external devices

Hi there,

You don't need any external devices! It depends what software you're using, of course! But there are a great many sounds and songs that can be made without any external devices.

Try FruityLoops and you'll find out!

Cheers

midi files for digital piano

I wonder if anyone can advise me. we recently bought a clavinova digital piano which has an Easy Play facility - this means that by just using a few keys on the piano, providing we use the right tempo, the tune will play. However, we noticed that we can only use Easy Play with some of the music and not all. Does anyone know the reason for this. Would be grateful for some advice.

converting mp3s/wave files

i am looking for a software that will covert mp3 and wavefile to audio i can play in my ordinary cd player

Read this message for solution

Camie and Holly, I believe you are after the same software this person required - see the answer to their message here.

Re: converting mp3s/wave files

you need a CD-Writer! If u have one it will come with software to 'burn' .wavs to a CD no problem. Mp3's are easily converted to .wav - try CDex it is freeware.

: steve

I have a killer cd writer as well as a few pieces of software but .wav files don't play on audio cd players, just computers. You need a convertor that works from either MP3 or wav to CDA, which is the standard format for audio cds. I cannot find one online anywhere and it's driving me crazy. I downloaded a CDH piece that was 10megs but it doesn't do what it promised in converting to cda. aaaggghhh Anyone know of a converter to cda??

RE: Need wav to mp3 converter

hi i downloaded a wav to mp3 converter but it doesn't work. i downloaded another one and it doesn't work. it only downloads about 2k of the file.

i really need a wav to mp3 converter.
please help.
thanks.

Re: RE: Need wav to mp3 converter

I believe you may be using a download utility such as GetRight that is interfering with the download process from Shareware Music Machine. If you
download the software manually (using your browser), there should be no problems.

I recommend you try MPAction Rip'n'Coder - Freeware WAV to MP3 Encoder for Windows 95/98/2000/NT.

Best of luck,
SMM.

which ones Nick???

we not psychic so you should tell us which ones haven't worked for u!! Have u tried CDex?? It's freeware and works for me. If 2 no working maybe you have a problem with your setup?? When u say only 2k download do u mean you CAN'T download the programs or that only 2k of conversion takes place??

midi questions

is there a GOOD freeware wav to midi converter? wave gbye doesn't seem to work properly - when i save, i get an error message.

and i forgot the name of this programme which converts midi files into standard musical notation - anyone know this programme?

Re: midi questions

: is there a GOOD freeware wav to midi converter?

Where does everyone get the idea that this technology exists?

If you were to read the questions previously posted on this board, you'd see heaps of similar questions together with the same answer ... THIS CANNOT BE DONE!

Sure, they are working on it, and there are some primitive programs available, like the one you already have, but none are very useful as only simple sounds such as produced by a single instrument can be converted.

However, in answer to your second question, almost all midi sequencer programs will give you a basic notation printout. Try something such as Cakewalk, Cubase or Logic or browse the links on this site for some shareware under "Midi sequencers"

Streaming RA to Wav to MP3 - Follow These Instructions

To create a wave file (file.wav) and then an mp3 file on your
hard drive, from streaming RealAudio that cannot be
downloaded, follow these instructions:

1. Use Voquette Media Manager 1.4 (free download from
http://www.voquette.com ) to create a "DRM enabled WMA" file
on your hard drive. With a browser such as Netscape right click
on the RealAudio link and copy link location. When running
Voquette Media Manager 1.4 right click on the minimized box
with the logo and left-click "Paste Link". Then left-click "Full
view" to see link location when "streams" is green-highlighted.
Delete the other links that come with Voquette. Click "record
all" to stream the RealAudio link. Encoding to create a "DRM
enabled WMA" file on your hard drive will automatically follow
the RealAudio streaming.

2. Download an old version copy of winamp224_full.exe from
http://home.microserve.de/download/#winamp or anywhere
else on the web where you can find and download this file.
Install and run this file.

3. When running Winamp 2.24 under Options ... Preferences...
set the Output Plugin to "Nullsoft Diskwriter" by highlighting it.
Click "configure" to choose where you want the wav file to be
written to.

4. With Winamp 2.24 select and play the "DRM enabled WMA"
file that was created in step 1. Instead of hearing sound, a
wave file should instead be written to your hard drive.

5. Use an MP3 encoder such as Lame (I use Lame
(http://www.sulaco.org/mp3 ) with the front-end RazorLame
(http://www.dors.de/razorlame) to create a compressed MP3 file.

More recent versions of Winamp, such as Winamp 2.60 and
later will *not* do step #4 above. Winamp 2.60 will give you
the following message: "Sorry, no .wav writing support for DRM
enabled WMA streams". In the version history notes from the
current Winamp, it states for Winamp 2.61: "* In accordance
with Microsoft's license agreement, we no longer allow you to
use DSP plug-ins or alternate output plug-ins when playing WMA
files."

This is the only way I know of right now to do this. I have
only looked into this for one day and there may be better ways
to do this and improved variants of the above instructions, but
hopefully this will work for you as it worked for me.

Good luck and let us know if you were successful.

Re: Streaming RA to Wav to MP3 - Follow These Instructions

I tried your method and the file created by Voquette Media Manager is only about 2KB. It does not play or conver to wav. I can't seem to be able to record the streaming RealAudio broadcast properly. What am I doing wrong?

Re: Rock band - mixing digitally with SB Live! - HOW? - HELP!

Hey there

I love rock and I have been in your shoes. What you will need to start with is multi-track recording software. If you're just starting out, I recommend n-Track Studio. If you're really keen, you may want to try out Cool Edit Pro.

There are heaps more programs in the Multi-track recording section of the site.

As for MP3 creation, I'm a big fan of Cool Edit 2000 myself. But you will find a heap of freeware MP3 encoders in the MP3 section of the site. The same goes for CD burning. You will find a number of popular burning programs on the Top 20 page.

Cheers
Geoff

Rock n' umm, how do I do that?

OK Wags I hate Rock n'Roll but I'll tell ya what u need;) Basically it's just a 'sequencer'. It's basically a virtual multi track recorder with effects/mixing etc OK? There r many around but for a novice start with a basic one or u will be lost. I bought Data Beckers 'Music Centre Pro' (30 UK pounds) and it's really done the buisness for us (guitars/bass+drums/vocals). It's highly reccomended in 'Computer Music' which I suggest u start to read:). It will give u 16 seperate audio tracks + 2 effects busses (chorus/d delay/reverb/comp etc etc) plus unlimited midi tracks. But u probablly won't use midi much for r n r so actually even a very basic card (which your's isn't) will play + record audio for u.

Just remember to set up your outputs in any sequencers 'audio options' or whatever and then play a demo song to test audio. Use souncard direct (not something like Yamaha SY-XG50 or Roland 'soft card') for low time delay. Adjust audio buffers of sequencer to as low before sound glitches too.

Very important for a lot of tracks is RAM. U need 64MB RAM bare min. I have 96 and it very good. IF 32 forget it and get more. If poor performance - increase your RAM.

Cakewalk pro Audio is probablly the top for guitar bands but Music c Pro is excellent and may do you for a year or two or permanently. The only thing more expensive sequencers have is maybe more efects busses but certainly not better overall sound quality. To convert sequencer mixdown (a .wav file) just use a file converter. Check www.sonicspot.com for a free one + many sequencer demos. By the way you MAY not get good results recording directly into your card - we use an old 4-Track just to boost the signal of our guitars/mics. You may get good results from the line out of an amp I don't know. Maybe if your card has a 'boost' facility it will be fine.

rock on
