recording piano

I'm an undergrad piano major and I am looking to do some very good quality recordings for auditions, etc. I have a P400 computer w/ 64 megs or RAM, I believe and a burner. I'm looking to be able to record create cds for auditions. For a relatively good qualitiy recording, are multiple tracks a necessity? I've researched how to mic pianos a bit and have a concept of it, but I'm looking for sound cards. Also, is it possible to rent good quality mics, rather than shelling out hundreds?

thanks

Re: recording piano

Take a look at www.shure.com They have a pdf file with some hints to record a variety of instruments including piano, what kind of mics, etc.

Re: recording piano

Well, first of all, the only way you could use multiple tracks is when you record your piano with more than one mic, but if you're not going to manipulate the sound or whatever, I think it's best to use one track. For a quality recording of your piano music, the most important thing will be a very good microphone. It's hard to say something about a soundcard, cause the more money you have, the better the soundcard will be. But normally, a relative cheap soundcard will also do the job.

Recording albums to CD on a PC

I want to copy my old record albums to CD on a 400 MHz PC. I have a HP CD-RW and cables, but learned quickly that the Adaptec Easy CD CReator that came with my burner did not have Spin Doctor. Is this an acceptable program, or is there a better one? I am not a computer genius nor do I wish to dip into savings or retirement to buy top-of-the-line software. Any comments will be appreciated.

Well, I from Quebec (Canada). I tried Spin Doctor
with LP's but the result depends on the quality of
the vinyl. Finally, I realized that it was better
for me to download the tunes from napster. The
file is didital and you don't have to worry about
scratches.

Just convert the MP3 in Wave.

Just a point of view from a simple man!

Re: Recording albums to CD on a PC

There are 3 things you are trying to do here:
1. get the music into the PC
2. (optional) clean up the clicks & pops
3. get the album sides into separate tracks

For #3: Try CDWave. It's shareware, think. It works great.
For #2: I bought Cool Edit2000, which has a "clean-up" plug-in for clicks & pops. The program plus the plug-in will set you back about $90. It will also record, though, which will accomplish #1. It's a very powerful .wav editor, and will work with MP3's, too. It'll also convert MP3's to & from to .wav's and a lot of other formats, in case your version of Easy CD Creator won't work with MP3's, so I think it's a good investment.

I use Spin Doctor to record (#1) because I like the interface - but since I don't use the other features it was kind of a waste of money.

There is an all in one solution
for recording, editing and burning and it's easy to handle: magix cleaning lab.

Re: Recording albums to CD on a PC

I record to minidisc, then into the soundcard using Wave Corrector 2.0 to remove pops/ticks, then burn the CD with EasyCD. You can bypass the MD and go from a line out to soundcard line in if you can get your turntable/amp combo close enough to your computer to run a cable between them. No software is needed other than EasyCD (or other editor) unless you want to clean up surface noise.

Re: Recording albums to CD on a PC

[The body of this post has been lost]

Re: Recording albums to CD on a PC

I, too, record first to minidisc then onto the PC via the sound card (Soundblaster Live or better) then I use "Sound Forge XP 4.0 to graphically eq, compress, and whatever else I need to do to clean up the mix. Then to the burner using Adapt tec EZ CD creator.
Pretty powerful stuff. Especially to those of us who started recording back in the 60's!

s/pdif

What's s/pdif?
What's the elaboration of s/pdif?

Re: s/pdif

: What's s/pdif?
: What's the elaboration of s/pdif?

the short answer: sony/phillips digital interchange format

basically a data protocol for sending/receiving
stereo digital audio, mainly for CD's, digital
audio tape machines, and similar consumer devices.

it is not the same as AES/EBU which has different
connectors and different data and different uses.

trouble can arise because SPDIF uses a copy
protection system which can be cheated, and really
just cause problems for everyone. it's called
SCMS.

"A Time for Us"

I am looking for the lyrics to the song "A Time for Us". I believe some of the lyrics are "A time for us, some day there'll be; a time for you - a time for me . . ." I think Johnny Mathis is one of the artist who has performed this song. Also, if memory serves me correctly, it was one of the songs done for the movie, "Romeo and Juliet" in the 70's(?) I think. Thanks for your assistance.

Audio recording from "Sound Out"

I am using Band-in-a-Box, along with 3 different soft synths simultaneously, and am pretty pleased with the sounds I am getting. Now I wish to record my efforts in AIFF format. None of the soft synths have built-in recording capabilities.

What I really want is a program which will "grab" the sound information that is going to my speakers from the Sound Manager and send it to a file. None of the recording programs I have tried so far will do this. They only take input from either internal CD or microphone. I have had to patch between the microphone and speaker to make a recording. While this worked well enough (no dropouts), to my ear the sound seemed slightly degraded by having gone D/A, A/D, and then again D/A when I am finally playing it back.

Is there a program out there that will do what I need?

Re: Audio recording from "Sound Out"

get GoldWave. with it you can record whatever is going to your speakers by setting it to record the "mixed output" of your soundcard - its just that everything has to be going to your sound card first... hope that helps

Re: Audio recording from "Sound Out"

I picked up Gold Wave to try and capture my Midisoft Studio tracks. I haven't had any luck getting it to record. How do I set it to record the "mixed output" of the sound card.

Re: music software???

Check out the quality DJ software; ACID™ line of software by <a href="http://www.sonicfoundry.com/">Sonic Foundry</a>, and eJay programs by <a href="http://www.voyetra-turtle-beach.com/">Voyetra Turtle Beach</a>. Those are my suggestions, but there are many other independant software developers creating great DJing software.

i want to know what are the master tapes and what can I do with them

Sending track titles to a mini-disk

Ok, so I have the digital output on the ole sound card, which means the quality of the recording from PC to Mini-disk is gr8. However the worst bit is that I want to be able to get the track names sent to the mini-disk at the time of recording. Does anyone know if this is possible? and if so what is required?

Re: Sending track titles to a mini-disk

ive tried it several different ways myself, it seems the only way to do it right now is by manually putting them in. the mini disc doesnt seem to have the same capabilities (software wise) as a typical cd. give it some time and the mini discs will be the future.... small, compact, protected and hold as much as a normal cd. by the way.. can you save data to a minidisc?? ive got a minidisc player with a pc link, ive burned songs, but i havent tried data, just curious before i would try.... another question for yah... how do you convert .rm files to .wav?? i got a shit load of rm files i want to copy to disc, but i havent found a program that will do it. i even got cool edit 2000. it doesnt code it correctly and it sounds like a chunk of noise....

convertion from real audio to wav

I want to convert from the real audio file to wav's file, because i want to record an audio cd

who cares!!!

who cares anyway of what I,m doing> I am just one psychotic man of the new millenium!!

Soundblaster Platinum Live!!

I am an amature guitarist and fairly familiar with computers but I feel rather stupid. I have a shiny new PIII 800 mhz PC which is equipped with this Soundblaster Platinum Live package but I haven't a clue what to do with it.
I thought maybe it might let me record myself with the built in CD-RW or at least I might be able to play through the speakers. But, funny thing, I feel like an idiot. I can't seem to decipher the documentation what little there is.
I guess I'm just not familliar with the "sound man's lingo" or something. Maybe I need an amp. I have an acoustic electric guitar which I was just trying to patch in to the jacks in front.
PLEASE!! someone who is familiar with this package come to this dummy's aid.

Re: Soundblaster Platinum Live!!

Hi Pat! I know what you are talking about...there's no documentation to help you with anything in the Soundblaster Platinum Live package. I had a bitch of a time just trying to get anything recorded, but when I asked around to other people who had it, I found out that on your computer you probably have about at least two different ways you can set your volume and mix stuff: the volume on your computer that would control your levels if you didn't have a Platinum Live, and the volume controls that come within the software of Platinum Live. One usually assumes control over the other: that is, if you adjust the level of one mixer control, it should adjust the level of the other mixer control. But you should make sure that the proper mute buttons for the proper input are unchecked. For example, in your windows volume control (where the little speaker is) if you go into it, you will find a playback mode and a recording mode that you can switch back and forth via properties. Make sure in "recording" your wave/line two slot is checked, and in playback your wave/line 2 is unmuted and other boxes that may affect your volume. Also, in the white boxes under properties in "recording", you should uncheck the wave and the midi--I found this allows you to record one track at a time without the tracks bleeding into each other when you record in Cakewalk.

Finally, you can go into the Live Task! box at the top of your screen: make sure the "Record Audio" function is selected: but be aware that it will assume you want to record in "What I Hear" rather than "wav/line2". The difference I found is that "What I hear" is just that: records whatever is inputted that comes out of your speakers rather than going through line 2 or something. But if you want to make multi-track recordings, you should record via wav/line 2. Apparently Live Task is supposed to make it easier for you to record or do anything you want to do in terms of sound, like if you want to listen to music in games, you should select that option or something. I think it's a big hassle, but I could be wrong.

These are some of the things I found out I needed to do, anyway...hope it helps you out a little bit!

Regards,

Eric
