Cubase vs. Cakewalk

WHich is better, cubase or cakewalk???? IM doing MIDI production and using soft synths like Fruity Loops (cough*n*cough*e*cough*e*cough*d*) and Steinberg Rebirth. And help would be appreciated.

Cakewalk 8.0 rocks !
Cubase was too sucky !
With Cakewalk you can do much more !

Re: Cubase vs. Cakewalk

My advice, get Cakewalk 9 and a second soundcard... Cubase has its pruposes but its a tedious app, cakewalk has easy to use MIDI operation and tons of it, and the second sound card is a good idea cause you can use one with cakewalk on it, to record the other with say a softsynth on it! If you want to actually make wav files of MIDI and softsynths, unless you have some fancy software virtual connectors, you WILL NEED the second soundcard. I use this setup all the time and its sounds great!

Re: Cubase vs. Cakewalk

If you are familiar with Steinberg Rebirth it's obvious you'll have an advantatge working with Cubase, but sincerely I prefer the Cakewalk products unless I think in both cases it's impossible to proffit all the features they bring.

Forget cakewalk, forget cubase! check out motu's digital performer or emagics logic audio. Both these programs are innundated with features that make them the pros preference.motu is more user friendly, while emagic is deeper. Also download pro tools free. Its a stripped down version of pro tools l.e. wich comes with their digi 001 interface.

Motu's DP is for Mac only, and who wants Mac tonight?!

Qbase is No1

VST instruments, incredible dynamics section, great bundled effects - it can't be beaten. Ofcourse if u like the Logic setup better then it can! Cakewalk is pretty run of the mill alongside these two apps. For midi u'd use XGEdit too?

To all rocksongwriters

Our band is starting to get more serious about bandpractice, and I as the songwriter am looking for a device so I can let them hear my guitar parts and the drumrhytim, and if possible also some vocals..

some examples: I want to hear my guitar and my vocals to try out some backing vocals, I want to try out different drumparts, I want to try a solo, etc....

I also would like to know what a good metronome is to be used for a band, so it has to be a visual metronome.

Volume levels of midi playback

When playing back or recording midi files thru Scorewriter, the volume of voices playing the exact same notes is louder than when the voices play different notes.
How do I level out the volume? Using either recording or editing software, etc.
Adjusting manually thru 'WaveStudio' would take forever.

Huh?

Sounds weird. What notes are you playing the same?? 2 sounds ARE louder than one even if it's the same sound by volume but if you send 'note ON' messages to a midi module that are played at the same time using the same sound then you may not get the same volume. I don't understand playing the same note on the same sound at the same velocity, why?

Most Midi sequencers will allow you to 'Velocity Limit' the Midi information. I don't know your software package but it should by rights be there. You could limit the velocity on THAT note to say 100 or less. Explain your problem deeper and to my E-mail address AS WELL as to the Forum.

Regards

Steve...R

Re: Huh?

I'm splitting up the voices of choral music so that I can make up practice sessions:
(1) by each voice, and
(2) with all voices combined.

When all voices are combined and they are on the same note, the note is many times louder than when the voices are in harmony.

Thanks.

mmm

I came across this once and it was caused by me unintentionally putting two clicks on the same spot in the edit grid so that two notes were played at the same time instead of one - but you wouldn't hear two notes just one loud one like Steve says. If this isn't it maybe u are using sound fonts which would have volume variability across the pitch scale just like sample use? How about applying a compressor which will equal out loud spots?

steve

Re: mmm

A compressor sounds like a potential answer.
Available where?

Re: mmm

Well Tom reading your other post it seems u are using a single voice/instrument for all your tracks and this is a problem. Try using slightly different voices and the problem may end. Also going through and altering the velocities of each double note as SteveR suggested is an option. A compressor will be available as an effects pluggin from this sites software section (link near top of page) but may not work on a midi track I'm not sure - if not convert to wav first but then it is not a cure all fix. If there is a major problem the velocity facility is there to help!

If you check the RealNetworks Web site, youll find there's a $29.95 upgrade available: RealPlayer Plus G2. Is it worth it? If you use RealPlayer often, and want to save content and tweak playback the answer is yes.

Keeping track of RealMedia content on the Web is also easier with the Plus version. First and foremost, you can record content to your hard drive for later perusal.

If your sly you can actually save the .rm file to your hardrive without any software. Just right click on the link and click save-as. This doesnt work in all cases, and the file must first be on your hard drive eg. you must have watched the entire clip. An alternative way would be to go into your Temp. Internet Files directory ( C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files [where C: is your hard drive]), find the .rm file and copy it to another folder. Either of these ways should work.

can some1 tel me exactly what equiptment i wud need to make music ?

Re: help

I need decoder softwear for my dvd player to play.

bit of a vague question but -

hardware needed is - soundcard (full duplex for listening + recording simultaneously)

software - hundreds of possibilities which I could witter down for u if u were a bit more revealing! I mean what sort of music? Many apps are style specific. For dance/electronic u can go with an 'instant package' like Ejay, Magix Music Maker or a 'programable' app like FruityLoops, Rebirth, Orion. For live instrument recording u would use a 'sequencer' like Data Beckers Music Centre Pro (most excellent), MicroLogic Fun, or Cubasis. U can even use two together eg creating drums + bass lines in FruityLoops and importing these into a sequencer to add guitars, vocals and midi instruments alongside. So many possibilities - try lots of demos and see what u like before buying anything.

The road less travelled...

You should really have a manual with Cubase or start on an easier program to get you Midi/Audio grounding. First off, connect the Midi output from your keyboard to the Midi in on the Computer. The Midi out from the computer can run straight to your samplers Midi in unless you have a keyboard that makes it's own sounds. If so the run the Midi out from the keyboard to the Midi in on the computer. The Midi out from the computer to the Midi in on the Keyboard. The Midi THRU from the keyboard to the midi in on the sampler.

The piano sound maybe because you are listening to a sound on your soundcard. You more than likely have the Midi in to the computer triggering a piano sound on the soundcard and you should disable that. If you set the Midi chain up as I have described, you will be on the path to setting your computer midi setting up properly. The output from the Midi recorded tracks on Cubase should be travelling out of the computer on the Midi out port and any corresponding Midi channel on the S2000 will respond to the information.

give it a go

Pro Tools free download problem

I've downloaded the free protools program, and I can import audio with no problems. But when recording audio from a live source i get a strange multi-tap delay which, as far as i can see is not due to any plug-in accidently patched in. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like it could be a Lantecy problem. The best place to ask Pro tools questions is their discussion Board. www.digidesign.com/conf/

On the cheap tip download pro tools free. then check out koblo's 9000 software synth.FORGET CAKEWALK AND CUBASE.checkout motus and emagics web pages.motus digital performer is probably your best option for a sequencer + multitrack(its more dependable than cubase)
And emagics logic audio is also great yet is less intuitive(complicated sh*t).A nice all in one beginners package is the pro tools digi 001. it has pro tools dependable and intuitive sofware(multi track + sequencer) and it has a cool I/o interface with lots of options.Currently i use the digi 001 and am pleased with its performance.check out sweetwater sound or musicians friend to compare prices.I reccomend the digi 001 or motu's digital performer wich is a more complete sequencer than the one youl get weith the oo1 package.

Mac THE ONLY REAL OPTION FOR PROFESSIONALS

Well lucky for you with the mac platform you have available to you all the high quality programs that the p.c. doesnt have. also most programs on both platforms run better on mac.most software thats p.c. only is of a low quality and there are a few cost effective mac options. The best pro audio packages besides pro tools are motu's digital performer and emagics logic audio.Forget cubase and forget cakewalk.also koblo's 9000 software synth is hella funky.

Dump the Mac!

Dance Ejay is fine for a starter and may keep u entertained for many months but these instant music packages are ultimately limited if serious song making is your business! Anyhow I don't think u will get it for the Mac infact u are on the impoverished platform as far as music software is concerned and if u want to go places with computer music the only viable option is PC unless u are very wealthy and can afford a kick ass Mac with say Cubase VST running.

Mixman Studio Mac (www.mixman.com) and Spark (www.tcworks.de) will run on your system +sequencers Cubase (which is advanced but most excellent), Cakewalk Metro and Logic I think but not much else.

steve

Prices...

Steve... Mac prices are very reasonable when you consider what you get for the money. If quality is your thing then there is rarely any comparison, even with the operating system aside. PC's are so varied in their hardware that it makes it a troublesome platform for music unless you have the system setup to JUST do music then it will more than likely work okay. Mac's have their problems too but the latency issue as well as DMA problems make the PC a second choice for serious music users.

The problem with the Mac platform is that so many people can only see Microsoft when they go and buy a home computer (we all know why that is!) therefore a lot of people already own one when going shopping for musical bits and pieces. The market will always sell to the masses first but serious companies will always support professionals choice, therefore, there is literally tons of music software available for the Mac from Childrens music programs to Top flight Pro-packages.

I have written this carefully as the Microsoft versus Apple problem is very boring for both parties. All i'll say is, don't be of the opinion that the Mac users are impoverished in ANY way, quite the opposite. Buying a Mac is a educated descision and is almost always rewarded by the feeling that you have done the right thing. This takes nothing away from the PC user, you just have to make the decision and go get it. I've used PC's for music and steer clear now I have a Mac. It was good value for money and I wouldn't change it for the world. Each to their own

Take it easy...!

Steve..R

' Buying a Mac is a educated descision and is almost always rewa

Your post is riddled with lies SteveR! I know how strongly u Mac addicts feel (my big brother is one) but there is NO denying that adopting this 'platform' (which is all this question is about - unless u think it has more 'style' than the PC?) is a self limiting option. A quick look at the 'composing software' listings of Computer Music (my Bible!) shows a ratio of 16/2 in PC Vrs Mac apps! So there are NOT 'tons' of programs for the Mac at the starter OR advanced level. Another thing - u only get a 400Mhz Mac for the price of a 700Mhz PC!

Face it - the Mac is a rich mans toy, a big heads ego reinforcing aquisition. Make yourself a fashion victim if u want - go ahead, pay twice as much for a substandard setup! A Mac in a pro studio is common I know but it's integrated there with other equipment costing thousands of pounds! Great, that's fine but they are toasters compared to PCs in any other situation.

You are not a 'bad' person because u think a Mac makes u 'better' than the rest of us but u do need to watch youself - and maybe get out a bit more?

steve:)
