Making Electronic Music...

Hi,

I have been listening to CD's such a the Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada
and Future Sound of London, and was wondering what kind of equipment
they use to create such music...

Would it be programmed using packages such as Cubase hooked up to lots
of Syuthesiser/Samplers?

Would like to get into the whole thing, but as you can see I am a
complete newbie. All I own is a PC with a midi keyboard and a copy of
Cakwalk...

What would be the best single purchase to add to my current setup??

Thanks,

Neil.

Good stuff to be found via <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&q=aphex+twin+software+used&spell=1">here</a>.

Re: Making Electronic Music...

Hey Neil,

I would suggest either Fruty Loops or Reason. Fruty Loops has a HUGE following in spite of (or maybe because of) it's somewhat retro and unsophistcated sounds. I have a friend who made a whole album with it and it turned out really great. The good thing about it is that it is very easy to learn and it can be a great intro to computer music. But you will use it for all it is worth pretty quickly and want to move to something new. ----http://www.fruityloops.com/

REASON!!! Its a great program. Maybe my favorite part about it is that I is very realistic to acuatall hardware. It consist of a picture of a hardware rack--2 kinds of synths, 2 kinds of samplers, a drum machine, loop player, a mixer and a lot of effects. You can even turn it around and rewire the back! On the bottom is a graphic sequencer.....It's everything you need!!!!
gittyup

http://www.propellerheads.se/

Me? I use reason, cubase and Protools. Cubase works really well with reason. and you just can't get away from using ProTools; at lease once in a while.

Jeff

Re: Making Electronic Music...

Basically, yes. If you look at the gear list of groups like Uberzone, they have probably twenty plus synths at their disposal, along with samplers, effects units and so on. You rarely find PCs - Apple is the preferred weapon of choice if at all.

If you want to do something even remotely similar but without the vast expenditure, look at software-based synths and so on. For starters:

Propellerhead Reason
FL Studio 4
Native Instruments FM7/Pro 53/Absynth
Arturia CS-80V/Moog Modular V/Minimoog

Reason is almost a complete studio on it's own, but it takes a while to get to grips with it. FL Studio 4 is a bit easier to use but not as powerful. The Native Instruments are superb reproductions of real synths (Yamaha DX-7 and Sequential Prophet 5); Absynth sounds like nothing else on the planet...

So, with a little expenditure and a lot of time, you can set up quite a powerful home system which can produce some superb results.

midi input from external keyboard

Hi,

I have a yamaha ypp15 external keyboard, I connect it to my pc (a
reasonable setup windows XP pro) via the joystick port on a
soundblaster pci128, the output is going to my soundblaster audigy 2
(cool card),
Now, everything is "connected" properly, I can hear sound when I use
the external keyboard in various applications that can do that
(band-in-a-box is the one I use). latency is ok as well and it sounds
ok.
THE PROBLEM:
I loose a lot of notes (midi messeges), also, in many cases notes stay
"ringing" after I release the key on the yamaha keyboard.
It is not a problem in the module that processes the messeges since I
look at midi messeges (using a mini monitor feature in band in a box
for example) and see that when I press the yamaha keyboards "too"
fast, it passes all sorts of "control" messeges that cause weird
things. On the monitor, I get messeges like "program change" and ""

The question is where is the problem, since clearly, it is not
possible to do any serious playing like this. The responsiveness is
bad. notes get lost and some notes stay forever (unless I rehit the
proper key or reset all),

This is a really annoying problem and I'd love it if someone can help.

Additional info:
1) the computer is not "busy" or anything. cpu seems fine.
2) the keyboard can handle the "fast" playing no problem when not
connected to the pc (that is sound goes out of the keyboard speaker).

any hints appriciated.

Re: midi input from external keyboard

If you have a midi cable connected from your computer to your keyboard
midi-in connection, disconnect it and try it again. It sounds like you may
have a midi loop feed back.

I would have told you this the first time but I didn't think a non-monitor
would ever see it. <g>

Convert MP3 to DVD

Hi, How do I convert an MP3 Video and burn it on a DVD? I have tons of music videos I want to view on my TV.

Re: Convert MP3 to DVD

You will want to burn it as a VCD disc. Try <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Nero_win32/">Nero</a> as it will do most of the work for you.

Losing right channel making wave file in cubasis

I am converting my midi tracks to an audio track and mixing down to a wave file in Cubasis VST 3. My wave file contains only the music on the left stereo channel of my song and plays only in mono although it is a stereo file. I am losing the entire right channel and have no idea why. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

New guitar score software with true sounds

Hi! I've developped an original guitar score (tablature) software. I would like to talk a little bit about it, in order to get your opinions on it.
It's compatible with another well known software : Guitar Pro (3 & 4), and is able to read gp3 and gp4 scores.
More than 30000 complete scores are available in that format.
The major improvement of my soft is its ability to play te scores with a convincing sound, even with a low-cost sound card :
It doesn't use MIDI interface to play the scores, but true samples of my own instruments, in wave format.
It also compute an analysis of the pieces to determine number of playing parameters automatically, such as the sense of brunshing the chords, the lenghts of effects like bends or vibrato, the volume and the strings that must be let sounding...
So the interface is very easy, you just have to enter the notes and the rhythm, the rest is done by the soft.
Each score can include up to 10 simultaneous tracks.
The available instruments are : Folk guitar, classical guitar, clean electric guitar, distortion guitar, electric bass, percussions and piano (all have been recorded with a microphone).
My soft is called Sweet Guitar, and you can find it on one of the following sites :
http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sweetguitar/
and
http://swigui.free.fr/
It's available both in english and in french (as you may have guess, i'm french, sorry for my poor english)

Can you write me your comments on it?
my email address is pigenet.frederic@wanadoo.fr

ripping cd,s

looking for shareware that will allow me
to rip 10sec or so at a time, not the whole
song

Re: ripping cd,s

To the best of my knowledge, such a thing doesn't exist. You'll probably need to rip the entire track then edit it down to the 10 seconds you need.

Re: Virtual Guitar

: : my final project is the virtual electric guitar
: : it would pic diffrents music notes and combine them both to make lead as well as the rythum guitars.

: : any idea how can I or should I do it?

: : yeh i think u should have it like so u can play tabs and chords cause therre ar some other sites with jus chords so u should have somthin like 4 little circle that u put over the strings u want played and have it also so u can have it and like ping each string withe like 1 2 3 4 5 6 as in the strings and click yer mouse in between the fret were u want it played

Re: Virtual Guitar

I think its a great idea. A suggestion of mine would be if we played a number of chords in a row and your putting the circles on where you want them to play, you can't remember what you played so you should have it record so you can listen to it when its done.

code to merge and/or append and/or save sections of WAV files?

can someone post code on how to

* merge 2 mono wav files into a single stereo wav file (one file in
the left channel one in the right)
* append one wav file to another
* merge 2 stereo wav files into a single stereo wav file (specifying
the "mix" for each channel - the volume for file #1 left and file #2
left, and right, respectively)
* save a section of a wav file (starting second, end second)

VB.NET code or a .NET assembly would be best for my purposes, but any
language would work, all it should be doing that is system-specific
would be binary reading / binary writing the data from the WAV file on
disk...

thanks

Re: code to merge and/or append and/or save sections of WAV file

What does the provider of this code get in return?
