Seeking pitch-sensitive input program...

Some time ago, I saw a program that would allow the
user to hum or whistle into a microphone hooked up to
the audio input of a sound card and would translate it
into notes of the correct pitch and length. I can't
recall the name of the program now that I'm more
interested in buying it; any clues, or names of other
programs that might do this?

BTW, this was a Windows program for the PC.

You might also try Capella Audio from www.whc.de or www.bhv.de .
I'd be interested in how reliable it works, too.

sync-ing Roland VS1680 with Cubase VST

I read an archive a while ago explaining how to sync a Roland VS 1680 with Cubase VST, but have lost it and need to know. Is there anyone who could fill me in with the details on that or send me to a place that can?

Static when recording audio to the hard drive

Hi...

I have a problem with noise on the wav files that I record to hard drive. I have a Pentium 100 with 24 meg RAM, and an ESS 1688 AudioDrive sound card. (it's a couple of years old.) When playing back my own audio recordings thru either the mic or line in on the sound card, there is static & popping, such as on a scratchy record. Also, frequent skipping occurs at higher sampling rates. I have a CDR, and would like to transfer analog audio to CD. Does anyone have an idea what's causing this & how to correct it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Hello.

Since the quality of recording is mainly affected by your sound card, check your sound card performance.
If the s/n ratio of the DAC & ADC of your sound card is less than 80db, probably noise is recorded with your music, so the most important is checking your sound card.
Choose appropiate sound card, like those by HOONTECH.com.
U find some frequency is missing when sample rate is higher. Maybe the reason is : your RAM is not enough.
During real-time recording, your music is first fit into your RAM and later write it t o your disk.
Because the more the sample rate, the LARGER SPACE you store in your RAM, if u just get 24 meg. probably the computer will omit those high frequency and you may get a poor recording.
At last, your computer may be too slow, for u mix a lot of track, 16 track , u may find that your music is apparently slower.

And try to fully defragment your disk

Defragmenting your Harddisk
is like a wonder for recording audio,
try it.

Re: Check System

I've recorded with AMD "586", 16 Meg Ram & 500 Meg
IDE HD (allowed stereo playback + stereo rec simultaneously). I dont think the popping is static, although it may _sound_ like that. Try using Win's System Monitor to TUNE & find your systems limits. Check HD performance (use your best). ZD-net has good "benchmark" progs. I think it's Event who has a good free audio-tester prog. Look at Syntrilliums (Cool Ed 96), help files - _very_well_written!!!_ Check win's "vcache" size and FIX win's (otherwise floating) virtual cache!!! (this is in the papers)
_Experiment_ (and yes: defragment!)
- - BEFORE you buy more RAM
Maybe have a special win _configuration_ for audio, where other stuff is disabled´... This goes very much for burning too - this is much more sensitive than audio recording.

I've thought of spreading tracks on different HD's, if the major problem turns out to be disk-speed - but never tried. Might give a track more though...

I cannot do more for you than this.

Enjoy! :)

hookup to a sound card?

Using a program like DartPro or similar, how do you connect from your receiver to the sound card?
How do you record a album or cassette and get the recording to the computer?
Someone said to connect from the headphone jack to the soundcard input. Is that right?

Yes, connect LINEOUT (or headphone jack)
from your external source to LINEIN of
your PC, then you can record it with
any recording software.

S/PDIF

CAN ANY ONE TELL ME WHY I CAN THE S/PDIF FROM WAVELAB TO MY DAT RECORDER BUT I CANT GET S/PDIF TO GO TO THE DAT RECORDER FROM VST

Re: S/PDIF

: CAN ANY ONE TELL ME WHY I CAN THE S/PDIF FROM WAVELAB TO MY DAT RECORDER BUT I CANT GET S/PDIF TO GO TO THE DAT RECORDER FROM VST

I'm unfamiliar with WaveLab, but here are some things to look at:

1. Is the DAT set up for digital input? (Push the switch.)
2. Is the output port for your program set to the s/pdif out on your card?
3. Painfully obvious - is the cable plugged in to the input on the DAT?

Good luck

: Also, if for some reason you have a SOundBlasterLive! card in there (I'm being presumptuous here!), beware it will only output at 48kHz (Why? Dunno!), and will unlock anything running at 44.10. If you're running any other dedicated 44.10 card, it'll work if the PC's mixer is set for SPDIF out.
Good Luck!

CDR mastering to .wav or cda ?- help!

when most people master onto CDR they save the files
as .wav files - but are these files recognised by
ordinary CD players or do the files have to be in the
usual .cda format?

Is there a program that converts .wav files to .cda ?

Thanks for your help.

all cd players except maybe the first generations ones
from the mid 80's will have no problem reading wav
files. I have been mastering cdr for many years
and the only problem i have had is that some old cd players
won't read or have trouble reading cheap quality
blue back cdr's. with gold or silver back cdr's
I have never had any problems with any cd players
even car cd players don't skip with those.

Compressed sounds for the WEB

I have Tape recorded sounds that I want to put on a Web Site. I want to to be accessable to as many people as possible yet be highly compressed so as it does not take forever to download as they do now as WAV files.
Can anyone give me any advice on how to do this, what programs to use and what file formats to convert the sounds to???

Re: Compressed sounds for the WEB

You should try some MPEG-2 encoders ( Fraunhofer's one is really good )
Submit MPEG at some of the search-servers.
If you have, for example, 44 kHz stereo 16-bit
WAV, you can compress it up to one tenth of his length with a minimal acoustic deformation.
( in its frequency spectrum the deformation is quite big but your ear isn't able to recognize it ! How genial !)

Jim,

I'm glad Steve confirmed my vague information on the 720KB thing...
Well, if you don't have your Atari any more, I don't know if
your PC will read Atari-formatted disks. According to Steve's posting,
it will, but I'm somehow pessimistic about that due to some very
enerving hours of work trying to do MAC->Atari->PC data conversion.
But try yourself. Maybe some Atari discussion forums or Atari newsgroups
can help you more as this is specific to a system, not to music software.

All the best,
Harald

If you don't have the newest version possible of score you can get it at the steinberg web page
if you do have the newest you might want to talk with a steinberg
rep to see if your audio configuration option are setup
properly. I had a similar problem when first got a
korg 12/12 card and the new version of VST fixed the
problem it had something to do with the ASIO drivers

Re: VST problem soundblasterlive
