Re: Roland XP80

Anneley,

you either have to insert MIDI information into your file
so that the XP80 switches to the right patches on each channels
or you have to set up your own performance in the XP80.
In this performance, you can assign each part a patch.

Greetings,
Harald

: I have a Roland XP80 keyboard and am currently using Evolution midi and Cakewalk sequencers on my PC. The problem Im having is that when I record instruments from different banks e.g. PR-A,B,C, User or XP it is fine until I re load the program as the instruments do not stick. I have the keyboard on sequencer and perform mode as opposed to patch or rhythm. Can you help or am I reduced to recording songs with just the 128 GM sounds.

Protools help

I have protools 4.01 and 4.03 for mac
I can´t make them sound
What hardware do I need?
Any one knows it?
Can you please help me?

Hardware...

Er... protools comes with all the hardware when you buy it. It wont work on it's own. You can get Protools lite for the Mac as well as the full blown version. The lite version is quite new and comes with the DigiDesign (?) 19" rack and PCI card. You get a very nice version of ProTools 24 track with all the AudioSuite pluggins. I think the price is about £700 which is less than you'll probably pay to get the hardware for the ProTools you've already got.

CUBASE VST vs. LOGIC AUDIO GOLD

Which is better? Cubase VST or Logic Audio Gold for recording guitar, bass, drum machine, keys and vocals thru a Tascam US-428 USB into an iMac DVD.

Pro-Programs

It's a matter of opinion. I personally have opted for Logic Audio but have used VST a fair few times. I like them both but there is something about Logic that floats my boat. Both are professional programs with professional level editing for midi and audio. Cool edit pro is a PC program and is generally used for two track editing. It is not better at audio recording, if anything, they are not camparable.

The quality of the audio is more related to the audio input/output convertors on the audio card (if any). Both programs support all the professional level cards available. Although your iMac does have PCI slots I think there are other USB and upcoming Firewire options (supposedly). You should be able to get a decent amount of audio tracks with a fair few plug ins on an iMac. Have fun!!

Re: CUBASE VST vs. LOGIC AUDIO GOLD

Are you only recording Audio?
if so, neither is that good for just audio, you're better off with Samplitude Studio 5.55 or Cool Edit Pro 1.2

MIDI-0, MIDI-1

What is the difference between MIDI-0 and MIDI-1?

Re: MIDI-0, MIDI-1

Type-0 Midi File is a "single",multi-channel track
Type-1 Midi File contains multiple tracks

re-mix and DJ stuff

Hello everyone, I am a young audio engineer. I get a few jobs as a dj every once in a while, but i'm an engineer at heart. I have a few questions. My first question is that how can I take a regular audio music track on a cd, and manipulate the eq settings so I can isolate the vocals, or I can isolate the music. I want to take instrumental singles and vocal singles and edit them together in anytype of program such as Acid 2.0 or something like that. Also, are there any computer programs out there that will isolate the vocals, or the music.

Please e-mail me at audiodrums@aol.com

Thanks,
Mikie

Re: re-mix and DJ stuff

Hello Mikie,

It's extremely difficult to successfully achieve what you are setting out to do as removing certasin vocals or music means removing certain frequencies of sound. Therefore, you may remove vocals but at the same time other parts of the song. You can try this Vocal remover however.

Cheers
Geoff

Recording w/Computer and DBX

I have a de-noiser (DBX) and would like to use for recording through the computer. To record from the computer I use a Y cable; one end goes to the computer and the other end (with two RCA jacks) goes to the preamp. The preamp only has plugs for the phono and the output from the phono. Does anybody has any idea as to how I can add the de-noiser to this arrangement? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Recording w/Computer and DBX

OK

Go to Radio Shack. They will have everything you need. What you need to do is hook it up on the outputs of the computer, before you send it to the splitter or anything else.

idiots guide

please help, i have fairly good spec pc and some loop style pc programs (fruity loops, magix music) and also demo versions of logic and massiva (unused). i am planning to buy midi keyboard but would be grateful if someone would explain in laymans terms what this would allow me to do without buying other equipment at this stage. the next question is what kind of software would work well with the aforementioned before i go and start to look at pricey hardware. any help received with thanks.

I have the Massiva software and a Roland EM-10 and a Midi cable to and from the PC. Thats all I have at this time. This allows me to compose in MIDI either by actually playing the notes or going to an insert mode and placing them in with a cursor. You can lay down one track at a time, copy and paste, moce, cut, ect, The Massiva takes a little patience to get used to, probably because this was my first attempt at MIDI (Im a guitarist). Eventually you will probably want to add a good sound module for performance, but if you get a cheap MIDI compatible keyboard you can see if it all does what you want it to without spending a ton of cash. With this setup, I can play the MIDI files either back through my Roland or through my soundcard and out to a recorder..Hope this helps, Good Luck. Jake

VST/DirectX Filter

I'm looking for a good filter to use with dance music tracks,
any suggestions?

Re: VST/DirectX Filter

: I'm looking for a good filter to use with dance music tracks,

Got just the ticket :) I've just written a VST Plug-in that's a Midi triggered gate, 2 Filters(Lowpass/Highpass/Bandpass) and a stereo delay. It's called FilterGate and it's great as a filter, a delay and filter or midi (note on/off) triggered gate. Use as an insert on a pad (or anything!) and you get a new midi output in cubase, like a vst instrument.

Check it out

Re: VST/DirectX Filter

Thanks, I'll check out the demo first, the thing is I'm
running Logic, and it seems to be selective as to
what VSTs it runs. Any feedback on your plugin and Logic?

Software, hardware and everything in between

Hey I am just starting to DJ and was wondering could anyone help figure out what programs I need.... hardware (trntables) and software

Re: Software, hardware and everything in between

It depends on what you exactly want to do DJ-wise. You can plays MP3s or do complex beatmatching of songs.

Try our RE-MIXING & DJ section. There's also PCDJ PHAT, Virtual Turntables 1.8 and many more.

LOCKING VS880 TO COMPUTOR

I was advised to buy a MOTO MIDI-fLYER to lock a VS880 to my Paris MEC system.However,the VS880 won't recognise it & therefore won't slave to it.HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MTC...

If your sequencer is outputting MTC (midi time code) and the VS880 is selected for EXT sync and is receiving the Midi from the computer then it should work fine. Note though that the VS needs to be put into either play or record mode manually. After the EXT is selected, you should press play or record and the lights will just flash. When a MTC signal is received, it should start playing/recording. Make sure your sequencer is producing MTC and that the "frame" rate is the same as the VS880 (which I think defaults to 30 frames per second (FPS)). Any more problems, get back to us.

Cheers

Steve...

Re: LOCKING VS880 TO COMPUTOR

The VS-880 should lock-up to just about any sequencing program via midi, as long as the sequencer is set on internal clock and the VS is on external. I'm using a VS-880 with a Mac via a Midi Translator II interface (Opcode) and running Mastertracks Pro and have been able to sync them successfully. Hope I understood your set-up correctly and that my comments will be helpful.

New Music Community...

This site is only just starting up but hopes to provide a platform for people creating music outside of the restricting commercially dictated music industry. It will eventually hope to provide a means to upload/download non-copywrite material made by musicians like 'you and me' who just want to have our music heard by others and then maybe burnt to a CD. It is in response to a backlash by musicians like myself who just want to be able to distribute material for the hell of it without having to conform to narrowminded record companies views of what we should all be listening to. It's the start of a new era of musical access and involvement for the common person and should be supported by people that realize the restrictive state of the Music Industry as it stands.

A seed has been planted for the idea that the site will eventually have a music producing community who will be able to create individual tracks of a song and then upload to the site for someone else to download and then add another track. This will enable drum programmers (say) to upload their track for someone to download and then maybe play piano or guitar and then re-upload the result for the next person to do their thing, It will be in the MP3 format which will allow for acoustic input as well as electronica. This idea is very much in the planning stage at the moment and will require some organising. The thought is to have different rooms for different styles of music. Jazz guitarists could create a tune with piano players for instance, it wont be restricted to electronica. Need a vocal line for your song? the possibilities are be endless.

The general feeling of the site should be considered a place to upload music created by yourselves to an unrestricted listening audience and will envolve no payment. It's a community for creative people that can exchange ideas by text or sonically. Get involved in the forum and help us set this thing up... everyone is welcome...!
