making mp3s smaller

is there any way to convert mp3s to a smaller format that could fit on a floppy?

Hup....

MP3's are currently the cutting edge of available, small and decent quality, stereo digital wave forms. I suspect you should look into reducing the quality if the wave file to be packed, or reduce the quality selections in the MP3 encoder. Start with the Bit rate and then break it down to either Mono or 8Bit. It's the best you can get at the moment as far as i've heard....

Steve...

Re: Hup....

One other suggestion, if another format is viable, then try WMA (Windows media audio, ughh!)
or VQF they tend to lean towards smaller filesizes

n - Tracks studio and soft synths

is anyone currently using the n-Track sequencer by FAsoft? what are your opinions on it? BTW, can anybody recommend a good low-cost (or free) soft synth?

Re: n - Tracks studio and soft synths

I have tried n-Track and softsynth Dreamstation, it works but with regular errors and lockups....

I do like the program though, easy to use and good for audio sequencing as well.

Re: n - Tracks studio and soft synths

A GREAT softsynth is TS-404. It has an analog type interface and power. There's lots of advanced features.

OMS / FASTLANE probs

I've got a fastlane USB connector for my G4, and it works perfectly on the through mode, but when I use it in Cubase 4.0.2, it only intermittently picks up the MIDI in signal. They've told me it's a problem with my OMS set up. Can anyone help

OMS and G4

I have a Midi Sport 2 x 2 USB interface connected to a G4/400 running Logic Audio. I must say that running the software that came with the interface almost completely installed everything for me other than having to re-name the in & out ports. Open up your OMS setup and tell me what you see. E-mail me a screen dump. (option,shift,3 at the same time will save a picture to your root disk). Are you sure that Cubase is infact only using OMS and not the Mac midi drivers.

Cakewalk home studio 8 or 9

I'm thinking of buying either the 8 or 9? I can get 8 for much cheaper (to make sure I even like, can learn cakewalk). Does anyone know if version 9 is worth the extra money for a first timer. I did some research and saw that 9 has more tracks, but I will be happy for a while with 4 tracks (assuming I can bounce tracks down, like with a cassette four track?).
Thanx, Synthdude

Re: Cakewalk home studio 8 or 9

I have both but i prefer to use Cubase 3.75rFull
Write to me to know more.

Re: Cakewalk home studio 8 or 9

Hi, I'm having a really hard time trying to use my Home Studio 8. I can't figure out how record different tracks. I'm an idiot at this stuff and Cakewalk's website is no help. I've tried to call them but I get a message referring me back to the bloody website. (Frustrating.)

I have a Roland XP-80. I know how to get the demo midi files to play through my board now, but my problem is learning how to play from my board to the Cakewalk software onto different tracks. How do I assign different sounds to different tracks.

In the past I've done it and then when I open it up again all the tracks are playing the piano sound. Please help if you can or refer me to where I can get some help.

I even went to Barnes and Noble looking for a book last night. They didn't even have anything.

Re: Cakewalk home studio 8 or 9

I am currently running on CWPA 8, and it fulfills my needs and I do not see a reason to upgrade to 9 just yet. I know it supports higher sampling rates and bandwidths, but it's not worth it unless are you are in audio for video for a profession and need the rates for DVD. And a lot of audio for video work for DVD even is sampled at 48k, which is the DAT standard. I really encourage the investment in CWPA 8 or CWHA 8, 9 is not a necessity for the most part.

Napster Search

I know Napster maybe gone soon, however, I have installed Napster on my system and also on my son's computer which is networked with Intel's Anypoint Home Network. Napster works great on my system, but on my son's computer you can type in a search request however nothing appears, it will even sit forever and never give you a list of songs that were requested? Any suggestions what could be the deal?

I did turn off all firewall and parental controls within the Intel Network software, but that didn't make any difference. Thanks for the help in advance!

Re: Napster Search

I had the same problem you posted online (with Napster on an Anypoint wireless network), and I resolved it today by deleting ALL Intel Anypoint software from my machines and replacing them with WinProxy. You can get WinProxy at Best Buy or CompUSA for about $39.

If you can't find it, check www.winproxy.com.

Good luck!

I'm having the same problem. Appears that the Intel ISS program does not do a good job of acting as a proxy for the client computer - at least as far as Napster is concerned. In my case, I was able to get results only for the first search after a fresh installation of Napster.

If you have any new information, please let me know.

Thanks.

Audio CD's

Hello my name is Naseem .Basically what I'm trying to do is take lectures from the internet and put them on a cd so that I can play the cd in my car.Now remember, this is not music I'm downloading it's someone talking in a lecture. So far I downloaded something called "NTI CD MAKER PRO 2000".
When I click on "save as" in the website of the lecture, it only saves as a realplayer file saying its a rm or ram file. Therefore it only goes to the realplayer and plays from there. It will not go on the cd when I go into NTI CD MAKER PRO 2000.All it keeps on saying is that it has to be a audio track,a wav file, or a mp3 file.So basically my question on this, "Post A Message", is can you please tell me the procedure on how I can make the rm or ram files wave files so they can be easily put onto my cd.I would really appreciate this kind help of yours since I have been searching all over for it.I only have 4 more days in my trial period for the NTI CD MAKER PRO 2000,so if you can send me this information as quick as possible it would really help.My e-mail address is ETNAS@cs.com.
Thank you for your help and cooperation.

p.s.If you would like to know what website I am trying to save from its www.troid.org.When you get into the website click on audio lounge on the top. Then click on a speaker from any list and it will list a row of different lectures. To the right of all of the lectures it says play and save, you would want to click on save A on any one of the lectures.

Once again thank you very much for your assistance.

Re: Audio CD's

hello Naseem,

there used to be a program called streambox ripper that would convert .rm files to .wav, but it is no longer supporting this.
you might try "Total Recorder", as it can record audio coming from other programs on your computer (realplayer). you will find
it for download on this site. it is very popular.

Re: TURN $6.00 DOLLARS INTO $6,000.00 MUST READ

TURN $6.00 DOLLARS INTO $6,000.00 MUST READ

READING THIS COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE! IT DOES WORK!

I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it. A little : while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you are now, and came across an article similar to this that said you could make thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought, "Yeah right, this must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept reading. Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and address stated in the article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of the list at #6, and post the article in at least 200 newsgroups, (there are thousands) No catch, that was it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I thought about trying it. I figured "what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right?" Then I invested the measly $6.00. Well GUESS WHAT!?... within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was shocked! I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first week, I made about $25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over $1,000.00! In the third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on the lottery!! Let me tell you how this
works and most importantly, WHY it works... Also, make sure you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information off of it as you need it. I promise you that if you follow the directions exactly, that you will start making more money than you thought possible by doing something so easy!

Suggestion: Read this entire message carefully!(print it out or download it.) Follow the simple
directions and watch the money come in!

It's easy. It's legal. And, your investment is only $6.00 (Plus : postage)
IMPORTANT: This is not a rip-off; it is not indecent; it is not illegal; and it is 99% no risk - it really works!

If all of the following instructions are adhered to, you will receive extraordinary dividends.
PLEASE NOTE: Please follow these directions EXACTLY, and $50,000 or more can be : yours in 20 to 60 days. This program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants. Please continue its success by carefully adhering to the instructions.

You will now become part of the Mail Order business. In this business your product is not solid and tangible, it's a service. You are in the
business of developing Mailing Lists. Many large corporations are happy to pay big bucks for quality lists. However, the money made from the mailing lists is secondary to the income which is made from people like
you and me asking to be included in that list.

Here are the 4 easy steps to success:

STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the following on each piece of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00 bills and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so
the bill will not be seen through the envelope (to prevent thievery). Next, place one paper in each of the 6 envelopes and seal them. You should now have 6 sealed envelopes, each with a piece of paper stating the above phrase, your name and address, and a $1.00 bill.

What you are doing is creating a service. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL! You are requesting a legitimate service and you are paying for it!
Like most of
us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects of it all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161)
and they confirmed that it is indeed legal. Mail the 6 envelopes to the following addresses:

#2) David Freeman

STEP 2: Now take the #1 name off the list that you see above, move the other names up (6 becomes 5, 5
becomes 4, etc...) and add YOUR name as number 6 on the list.

STEP 3: Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to original as possible.
Now, post your amended article to at least 200 newsgroups. (I think there are close to 24,000 groups) All you need is 200, but remember, the
more you post, the more money you make! You won't get very much unless you post like crazy. :)
This is perfectly legal! If you have any doubts, refer to Title 18 : Sec. 1302 & 1341 of the Postal lottery laws. Keep a copy of these steps for
yourself and, whenever you need money, you can use it again, and again.

PLEASE REMEMBER that this program remains successful because of the honesty and integrity of the participants and by their carefully adhering to the directions. Look at it this way. If you are of integrity, the program will continue and the money that so many others have received will
come your way.

NOTE: You may want to retain every name and address sent to you, either on a computer or hard copy and keep the notes people send you. This VERIFIES that you are truly providing a service. (Also, it might be a good idea to wrap the $1 bill in dark
paper to reduce the risk of mail theft.)

So, as each post is downloaded and the directions carefully followed, six members will be reimbursed for their participation as a List Developer with one dollar each. Your name will move up the list geometrically so that when your name reaches the #1 position you will be receiving thousands of dollars in CASH!!! What an opportunity for only $6.00 ($1.00 for each of the first six people listed above) Send it now, add your own name to the list and you're in
business!

---DIRECTIONS ----- FOR HOW TO POST TO NEWSGROUPS------------

Step 1) You do not need to re-type this entire letter to do your own posting. Simply put your cursor at the beginning of this letter and drag your cursor to the bottom of this document, and select 'copy' from the edit menu. This will copy the entire letter into the computer's memory.

Step 2) Open a blank 'notepad' file and place your cursor at the top of the blank page. From the 'edit' menu select 'paste'. This will paste a copy of the letter into notepad so that you can add your name to the list.

Step 3) Save your new notepad file as a .txt file. If you want to do your postings in different settings, you'll always have this file to go back to.

Step 4) Use Netscape or Internet explorer and try searching for various newsgroups (on-line forums, message boards, chat sites, discussions.)

Step 5) Visit these message boards and post this article as a new message by highlighting the text of this letter and selecting paste from the edit menu. Fill in the Subject, this will be the header that everyone sees as they scroll through the list of postings in a particular group, click the post message button. You're done with your first one!

Congratulations...THAT'S IT! All you have to do is jump to different newsgroups and post away, after you get the hang of it, it will take about 30 seconds for each newsgroup! **REMEMBER, THE MORE NEWSGROUPS YOU POST IN, THE MORE MONEY YOU WILL MAKE! BUT YOU HAVE TO POST A MINIMUM OF 200** That's it! You will begin receiving money from around the world within days! You may eventually want to rent a P.O.Box due to the large amount of mail you will receive. If you wish to stay anonymous, you can invent a
name to use, as long as the postman will deliver it. **JUST MAKE SURE ALL THE ADDRESSES ARE CORRECT.**

Now, each of the 5 persons who just sent me $1.00 make the MINIMUM 200 postings, each with my name at #5 and only 5 persons respond to each of the original 5, that is another $25.00 for me, now those 25 each make 200 MINIMUM posts with my name at #4 and only 5 replies each, I will bring in an additional $125.00! Now, those 125 persons turn around and post the MINIMUM 200 with my name at #3 and only receive 5 replies each, I will make an additional $625.00! OK, now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM 200 letters with my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me $3,125.00!!! Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name at #1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive $15,625,00! With an original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another $6.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start posting again.

The thing to remember is do you realize that thousands of people all over the world are joining the internet and reading these articles everyday?, JUST LIKE YOU are now!! So, can you afford $6.00 and see if it really works?? I think so...

People have said, "what if the plan is played out and no one sends you the money? So what! What are the chances of that happening when there are tons of new honest users and new honest people who are joining the internet and newsgroups everyday and are willing to give it a try?
Estimates are at 20,000 to 50,000 new users, every day, with thousands of those joining the actual internet. Remember, play FAIRLY and HONESTLY and this will really work.

Re: Audio CD's

Naseem, I downloaded a program called WinGroove which is excellent. It is not FREE, but can be activited with the creator for about $20. It's worth it. You can convert midi files, etc, and convert to a wav file format. I'm not sure about rm files or what that means. You will want to go to the website and make sure you can save from the internet this way. However, I think it'll work.

Recording FRUITYLOOPS playlist track onto cd with burner? PLEASE

Hi...thanks for all the help and advice some of you have given; I appreciate it. I was wondering something else: I have the demo version of Fruityloops, and I'm having a lot of fun with it already, but I can't seem to figure out how to burn my songs that I make once I arrange them onto the playlist, having all the loops and patterns in place. Can anyone help me out? I have a burner, of course, but do I need something else? Maybe there's some kind of conversion process? Thanks in advance!

VERY simple!

T - if you have the new 2.7 demo from fruityloops websit it (and probably other versions) export to wav.

Simply click on 'Export' under 'File' then click on 'Wave file' . Then chose a location on your computer (desktop is good) then click 'save' . then a fruityloops render box will come up - click the 'Go' box and your whole song (as long as the loop light is on) will be rendered to your computer as a .wav file. This file is easily burned to a CD R drive with a standard software program which should have come with the drive.

I think, perhaps, that the demo version is disabled in some way when it comes to the actual recording of tracks. i had the demo for a while and it rivals anything else out there in it's class at a fraction of the cost. check out their website for more info on your question.

oops...sorry; thought the message below had been lost!

Total concurance, here's the deal. As a guitarist, both acoustic and electric, this is a fabulous tool for backing tracks. After you're happy with your playlist, go to file, export. It will give you a choice of making an Mp3 or Midi file. Choose Mp3 and take it from there.

How do you USE the JV-1010!?!?

Hey!
I'm so used to drum machines and step sequencing, but I am limited by the memory in these devices. I bought a JV-1010 because the sounds are good, but DAMN does this manual SUCK! I can BARELY edit sounds (I can't seem to find a way to set it so that my 4 octave keyboard uses the middle range of the keyboard) and I can't seem to figure out how to get it to work with Cakewalk so I can access sounds out of multiple banks (a la play piano from bank A on one track, bass from the Session bank, lead keys from the user bank etc at the same time)... I know I suck at this and it's my fault for not seeing how to use it, but can anyone help???

Thanks!

Hey there... JV-1010 user.

I own the same device myself, and maybe we could share our (still limited) wisdom with each other... 'cos I'm kind of a newbie my self. You should download the Instrument Definition Map, from the net, for your JV-1010. a very good place for this is www.lilchips.com/cakewalk/ins/jv-1010.asp This contains all the instruments that is in the JV. Then all you got to do, (in Cake 9) is go to the Options -> Instruments -> Define -> import, and select the JV-1010 ins file (JV-1010.ins) to import. then you can adjust from the trackproperties to use the JV sounds.
Hope that helped. I'm using Cake 9 myself... so maybe we could share our information... every time we learn something new. Are you familiar with ICQ. (www.icq.com) I's a really easy way to "speak" (write) live.

I imported the JV-1010 ins file, but how do I adjust from track properties to use the JV sounds?
I'm using a MIDi patchbay which routes my Roland A-33 controller to the the JV-1010 and the JV-1010 to Cakewalk, then Cakewalk back to the JV with Echo on.
