PS..I was bumped for a Roy Orbison song (of all things) that I didn't even know I had..so, more and more are being added.......watch out. An good alternate is:

www.bearshare.com

It's NOT your Napster, but has found everything I have looked for, including all files...jpgs, gifs, mp3s and such.....

Also, slower and less reliable but many dl's available..if one fails, try another.

there is a ram file on the internet that I would like to save. Real player automatically starts streaming it. I want to download the actual file to my HD and then cut out the parts I want and them out them on my site. Any suggestions? Thanks.

mastering software

Been using Sound Forge 4.5 for mastering, but want something better. Sonic Foundry claims an upgrade from 16 bit is "coming soon", but I'm told they've said that for well over a year. I've got an analog board, 3 20 bit ADATs in my studio, and master on computer. Don't really want to go to the "hardware-solution". Suggestions?

Oh, I just remembered that I heard from vcdhelper.com that you can convert .asf to .mpg using the following program:

I don't know how to convert an .asx file, but I know how to save the .asf file it points to. If you save the .asx file and edit it, you will notice that it looks like HTML. Embedded in this file is the location of the .asf file. You could create your own HTML file with a link to the .asf file and view it in your browser. At that point, you could try to save the .asf file (it may not work). I like dragging (or copying and pasting) the file location into a Windows program called Streambox VCR. This program was originally intended to capture RealAudio and RealVideo streams, but I've also used it to capture .asf files, sometimes by dragging the link to a .asx file into Streambox VCR (try copying and pasting the link contained in .asx file).

Streambox.com doesn't currently have a download of Streambox VCR because it is coming out of beta. Here's a link to a site that has beta1:

BTW, .ram files are very similar to .asx file, only they only have the link(s) to the .ra file(s) (no HTML-like tags).

Backup music for Guitarist

I am interested in making/buying/downloading backup music (keyboards/percussion). Are these recordings readily available? Can I make them by removing vocal and guitar tracks from my CDs or MP3 files?

you will be better off using midi files that are easily audited. i use cakewalk software and recordthem onto mini c.d . mini's can be recorded over and edited also-------good luck

ok, you are never gonna find that. You'll have to do the remixing yourself, and its not going to be free. Try creating beats in fruityloops(www.fruityloops.com) then mix it with some vocals in acid(www.sonicfoundry.com)

Is there an easy way to adjust volume?

Is there a tool that makes it easy to adjust the volume on wav/mp3 files that were downloaded from different sources so I can burn a CD where one file isn't significantly louder or softer than the next? I currently use Wave Studio, which requires me to adjust each file individually, using my ear to decide what percentage of amplification to apply to each file.

Hi,

You could try "Normalising" the audio files. Most editing software (audio related) will more than likely give you the option to process the files using the Normalise function.

The process increases the level of the audio to the point just before Digital distortion. This therefore will balance out the levels for you. The problem with it is that, sometimes you will have a file with a pop or a click that the normalising process will adjust to. Some of these pops and clicks can appear much louder than the highest musical level peak and will adjust the overall volume incorrectly. You have been warned!

live music from MD to HP7200 burner

I've transfered a live recording from my Sony MZ-R55 (minidisc recorder) to my hard drive and used Sound Forge to split up the tracks. When I try to burn the .wav files to my HP7200, it tells me that my burner won't allow the 2 second gap in between tracks to be removed. I'm using Nero for the burns. I've copied directly from live CDs (with no gaps) and haven't had this problem. Has anyone else tried this?

Dammit, i think it's impossible almost. i mean all i want to do is convert a midi file to a ^&*&in wave or mp3 so i can burn it, but nooooo they make you spent 3 hours hunched over before you discover they made it impossible on purpose! ah well hell....mail me if you know how.....i'll reward you...^-^
