A QUESTION FOR SAMPLITUDE EXPERTS

1. I run a P111 w/ 256 meg ram, 2 ultra DMA HDDs, Windows 98, 1 DSPF card w/ 1 AX44 breakout box. Samplitude 5.55, C- console 1.3.

I cannot seem to record at 32 bit float when selecting 48 khz sampling rate on the record window. Samplitude tells me I'm only recording at 16 bits, then can only playback the recorded wave at 16 bits which is strange and useless to me since I can record and playback at 32 bit float when selecting 44.1 khz sampling rate in the record window. My 'record capabilities'(hitting 'Dev" button) tells me I can only record at maximum of 16 bit, 44.1 khz which is crazy considering the Yamaha DSPF can record to max 32 bit, 48 khz.

I have tried Samplitude v 5.57 as well w/ same problem. I also had another 16 bit soundcard which I thought might have interfered with things but I disabled it in control panel/device manager, and it didn't make any difference. I have also tried upgrading the DSPF driver and still no success.

Other obvious things; I've obviously chosen 32 bit float in Samplitude's Internal presison settings as well as track info. In destructive editing, the screen tells me that I've got a 32 bit float, 48 khz file but I suspect that this is Samplitude working to this after its been recorded, So my card's not working to its fullest capability... or maybe I'm just missing something very obvious.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated,

X Pin

Dude; Samp. Is 2496 that's 24 bit 96k
not 32bit 96k
Try recording with what ever your sound card will support then bounce your .wav into a 32bit floater then resample the whole thing to the desired resoloution.
32bit I believe is reserved for sound cards that support those rates, hence the option to bounce to that rate dialougue.
I also beleive samp. biult a little overhead when they concieved the program, a wise choice that has already been exceeded.

Mp3 vs .wav

Could someone please tell me what the difference is (other
than size) between these 2 types of files?
Thanks,
JC

Re: Mp3 vs .wav

WAV is more true to the original recording than MP3, as MP3 is used for the compression of WAV (and other audio formats) and is a '<a href="http://www.mp3machine.com/news/557/">lossy</a>' type of compression. Basically, MP3 is smaller in file size than WAV and has lower sound quality because it removes parts of the recording deemed either inaudible or less important.

Anyone else like to input??

Transforming cassette-taped music into computer files

This is a very entry level question for which I could use some help. I want to transfer into my computer some music I taped onto cassettes some years ago and as I understand it I can just run an audio cable from a digital jack on my cassette player to my sound card. Is this correct? And if so what kind of files do they become on the computer and can they be cleaned up(remove hiss) or otherwise improved upon with some simple musical software. I'm running on Windows 95. Thanks for your help!

Re: Transforming cassette-taped music into computer files

Hi there

To answer your first question: Yes!

You'll need an audio editor to record the audio from the cassette. It should be recorded as a WAV. <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Cool_Edit_2k/">Cool Edit 2000</a> or <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SoundForge_5/">Sound Forge 5</a> are worth downloading.

Cheers
Geoff

high quality wavetable samples

Hello:
I'm currently using a roland VSC and band in a box software to create midi accompaniments to my classic guitar playing. I'm wondering if there is a better VSC or soundcard with even more realistic samples than the Roland , (which is pretty good).

Re: high quality wavetable samples

: Hello:
: I'm currently using a roland VSC, a very basic riptide soundcard, and band in a box software to create midi accompaniments to my classic guitar playing. I'm wondering if there is a better VSC or soundcard with even more realistic samples than the Roland , (which is pretty good). also, There is the issue of latency. Even though I'm using a 500mhz computer, B in a B doesn't allow me to use the VSC while I'm recording, because of the latency issue. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Cakewalk 8, midi to wav

Hi everyone!
I need an answer on how I am to convert the midi (the channels) into an audiotrack in Cakewalk 8. I don't want to know how to record the midi by recording it as it plays up (that I know already). That ain't good enough.
I must know the operations needed to actually convert them (export if you like) not under real-time execution/recording, but as an option. It should more work like a batch program... takes the time needed for convertion instead of depend on timecritical execution.
I thank you for any help, and time spent reading and answering my question!

you're best bet is to download Wingroove
which will allow you to convert your midi
files into WAV. you can select each channel
(midi track) for the WAV file.

impulse tracker

how can i convert .IT files in .mp3 or .wav ??
which software is able to do this?

Re: impulse tracker

: how can i convert .wav files in .mp3 or IT ??
: which software is able to do this?

Re: impulse tracker

go to the DOS prompt enter the path of impulse tracker. ex. C:\windows\progra~1\it.exe -s20.
the -s20 argument will open IT in disk write mode. This command will make IT write to your hard disk as a wav file instead of outputting it to your speakers.

Re: How to copy my 331/3 records on to blank CD's

First you'll need to convert your LPs into WAV files which you then burn on to CD.
Take a look at the following programs.
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/LPRipper/">LP Ripper</a>
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/LPRecorder/">LP Recorder</a>

Anyone know of any cd-rw discs that'll work with conventional cd

I think that because of the refractive or reflective changes used in CD-RW, they'll all only work with DVD or CDR, but it's worth asking if anyone's found a brand that does work!
