On top of all the other answers...

There used to be a system that used the Betamax VT format that meant you could use a Betamax recorder as an analogue to digital mastering solution. Any betamax machine would do (bar a few I suspect). All you needed was the analogue to digital convertor and the beta deck. Some small studios I knew used to use them although I think they lost popularity quite quickly when DAT came into play.

MiniDisk is so cheap these days that it may be worth saving for one of those instead as they usually if not always have digital ins/outs, if you can live with the compression, it is a more hassle free way to go...

Re: USING A VCR TO RECORD STRICTLY AUDIO?

ALSO! make sure you buy a good quality VHS tape!
cheap tape can have "drop outs".

Re: USING A VCR TO RECORD STRICTLY AUDIO?

Yep, all you need is the proper cables. You'll need two of them for the right and left inputs on your VCR. They'll each need RCA plugs on the one end because VCR inputs are always RCA. The other end of the cables should hook up to whatever you are output your sound from (1/4 inch, XLR, RCA). If you can't find cables like this, you can almost certainly find adapters that'll do the job.

People sometimes do this because they don't want to shell out money for a DAT and because Video tape is larger, stronger, and better suited for sound than cassette tapes.

: I hope that some audio guru can answer this for me. I've heard and read that you can use a HiFi VCR to record audio (kind of like a poor man's DAT recorder). Is that true and if it is, please tell me how to do. Thanks in advance.

Re: USING A VCR TO RECORD STRICTLY AUDIO?

Oh, one more thing. If your VCR has something that shows you the input signal, great. That way you'll be able to know if the signal coming into the VCR is too loud.
If it doesn't have this you might want to do a test recording first to make sure all your levels are set right and nothing is too loud.

need to convert cda to wav files

Using the roland 880, i have many tracks that are in .cda format, however in order to use them in the macromedia program, director, they need to be converted to .wav files.

any suggestions?

Adaptecs cd burning software makes it very easy to convert .cda files to .wav. I'm
sure other cd burning software must offer the same option.

Why do I get "undefined Soundfont error" in CW9?

Sometimes when I try to load a soundfont in Cakewalks sfmanager I get an error message; undefined soundfont error. Does anyone know why?

Re: Why do I get "undefined Soundfont error" in CW9?

Try another sfmanager, maby you discovered a bug in Cakewalk.
Maby your soundfont is corrupted (if so you should reinstall soundcard drivers).
Maby the soundfont needs more memory than your soundcard has...

Thanks for the suggestions. There could be something in my computer setup that Cakewalk doesn't cope with.
I should also have mentioned that I use Sblive value and sf memory set to 32 Mb. Even a small soundfont won't load sometimes. And the fact that it happens only occasionally is very confusing. I use Liveware 1.0 only. Is that the problem?

Adaptec EZ ? can someone explain how to.....?

Hello! Ive got a question about adaptec's ez cd creator. I have a new computer and am in the process of burning my mp3 in data form to CD for transfering to my new computer and for backup purposes. I have been noticed just now, and not prior to my new PC, that the cd's I make will not allow me to create audio or data form CD's when I try to make a CD on my new PC with its burner. I get a message that says these files, which are mine, from my old PC are copyrighted and protected. I never had a problem when I made data mp3 cd's for my friend to use and listen to on their comoputers. I dont get it.... I would assume that somehow hopefully by mistake, I am burning these files from my original PC in a way that copyrights them for my protection, I guess... But it seems to not be working out in my favor. Could someone tell me if Im crazy or let me know how to correct this problem? Thanks everyone.... Ciao!
Alex!

Weird...

Sounds very strange.. A way around it is to compress the files with a ZIP or Stuffit utility. The files will more than likely take some time to compress as they are already compressed although you could put them all into a folder and then compress the folder for ease.

EZ cd shouldn't have a problem burning the .ZIP files. If it does, then take EZ Cd back and get a refund...

Convert vr8 and vs1 files - Rolandvs840

Need help with converting files from a Roland vs840
Question is how do i convert vr8 and vs1 files into
audio files? Which softwares work best with Roland
produces?

You used to be able to...

...dump the files via scsi although I think that was written out of the operating system some time before the first 840's. Roland have obviously done this on purpose in the search for all that proprietry rubbish that gives us consumers a headache.

The best way to do it whilst staying in the digital domain, is to connect the SP/DIF coaxial output to a digital input on your computer. If your computer doesn't have a SP/DIF coaxial input, then you would need to use the analogue outputs from the VS to the analogue inputs on the 'puter...

Good Luck

help with a 40gig quantum drive

I know this is totally not the right forum for this but i am desparate and I know you guys are all very smart people (ie if you know how to work cubase or rebirth or something like that you must be!!):
A few days ago I purchased a brand new Quantum fireball Hardrive, 40 GB, QML40000LD-A, lct20.
I have an 440LX motherboard in my PC that’s about 3 years old, made by Gigabyte, the model number is GA-686BLX. It runs happily a Pentium II 333 processor with a 6gig and 10 gig Quantum drive attached to it. This new drive is a nightmare though: the motherboard does not accept it, it will ALWAYS hang in the bootup sequence when interrogating the drives. It will check the other drives ok but when it comes to the new 40gig one it will do absolutely nothing. It says ‘press F4 to skip’ but when doing so nothing happens. What I can do is press del and go into the bios, change a few things and then reboot, but it will never get past the drive interrogation. Also within the bios there is an auto detection feature, when I go into that the PC will hang and I have to reset it. These are the things I have tried doing:

-Flash my bios to the latest version
-Flash the bios to the second latest version
-Disconnect the other drives and try it on primary/secondary master and slave positions on its own
-Connect the drive to my work computer (one of those small HP’s, 600Mhz or so) and the drive gets recognized immediately
-Play around with some settings in the bios

WHAT ELSE IS THERE TO DO?? The motherboard is not new but not too old either and nothing on the Gigabyte webpage indicates that it is not compatable with large drives. Also if that was the case, wouldn’t I at least still see a small portion of the drive?

ANY ADVISE WILL BE TREASURED!!!!!

MESA fubar w/PC

My name is Gregory McNeer and I'm a semi-pro musician in Nashville, Tn
I recently purchased an S2000 (which I put 32m of ram into) and am having
a lot of trouble with the MESA software I downloaded last week. It has alot of problems transferring and operating in general.
My computer(a PC)is a 500mhz CPU with 256m of ram, and big, fast drives.
I have an Iomega SCSI card with it's own Bios and it definitely "sees" the Akai
during bootup. I have also checked SCSI id's, host #7, Akai #6, and made
sure the Akai's "MIDI via SCSI" is turned on. I have also tried different bootup sequences.
My sample transfers wind up with crap on the ends of them and none of the MIDI editing controls work. The sampler alone seems to work fine. Nobody I know uses a PC with their Akai's and Akai themselves were no help.
Some have suggest that maybe my SCSI cable is to blame, but that would'nt explain why the MIDI control isn't happening.
If you think I should get another cable who makes a better one?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Gregory A. McNeer
Nashville, TN

Re: MESA fubar w/PC

I probably can't really help as SCSI problems can be all sorts of things, if it's a hardware issue. Don't forget to check the termination of SCSI as it's generally important to terminate the last SCSI device in the chain. Keep the lead as short as possible as well.

If you have an audio editor, then the likelyhood is, it will have something called SMDI sample transfer. Load a wave in the editor and then select SMDI which will allow transfer of the wave to a selectable sample number in the Akai. If this works fine, then it maybe a software issue..

Cya!

Pins can't connect

I have downloaded large single mp3 files (whole albums or cds). I try to play them in Windows Media Player 6.4 and get an error. Pins can't connect.Wrong media or something like that.
I then try Winamp and the music plays for a moment then crashes the program.
Does anyone know what the problem is and how to correct it.

Re: Pins can't connect

You need to get a little prog called winplay.
It's a player for locked mp3s, & it requires a code (normally you have to pay for to get it).
E-mail me for info.

Re: copying cd music

Try <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Cdex/">CDex</a>. <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/cgi/htdig/htsearch.cgi?config=htdig&restrict=%2Fsmm%2Fprograms%2F&exclude=&method=and&format=builtin-long&words=musicmatch">MusicMatch Jukebox</a> is great if you've just started out.

vst instruments midi setup

After installing some instruments into VST I am experiencing some irritating MIDI issues: The instruments have set themselves so that when they recieve an external MIDI message, ie. keyboard or mouse, there is a large pause before the sound is heard, BUT, when the instrument is being triggered by a MIDI arrangement on a VST MIDI track, the sound is heard instantly. Whilst the sound is heard in time with the internal midi trigger, the message to play the sound is arriving early in the instrument so that you can see the keys being played before the sound is heard. There is some sort of latency compensation that is making this happen. I would rather have the external MIDI trigger to sync with the VST instrument sound so that I can play them.... Can anyone help me PLEASE!!?!

Re: vst instruments midi setup

it's called 'latency' by those in the know and it's a result of the soundcard drivers u use, cpu power and settings. you want to use ASIO drivers if you can and set sound buffers to a min. on my soundblaster with ASIO driver i get >10ms delay which is not noticable. with DX drivers it's 60-750ms which is unusable. you can play midi sounds when recording then playback via vsti but that's not much fun
