hooking up keyboard with jv1010 to computer using cakewalk progr

my daughter got a jv1010 to use with her yamaha keyboard , she uses cakewalk to record her music we have had this roland jv1010 for two years and can not figure out how to set it up with midi cables or even understand the book can anyone help me

Re: hooking up keyboard with jv1010 to computer using cakewalk p

Dear Ken:

I too use a Yamaha keyboard, Cakewalk and a Roland JV-1010.

I found I had to buy a Midiman Portman PC/S to connect the keyboard a serial port. (I also found that the MIDI connector of the sound card itself could not be used for this purpose.)

The only problem I have now is that the keyboard outputs the constant velocity at 80 making it hard to hear sometimes.

Re: hooking up keyboard with jv1010 to computer using cakewalk p

OK. The yamaha MIDI OUT sends MIDI signals to whatever. It also has a MIDI IN that receives signals and synthesizes the notes from those signals. The simplest thing is just to connect Yamaha MIDI Out to Computer Soundcard IN . This gets the MIDI "notes" into the Computer for recording by Cakewalk. If you're recording with Cakewalk then you probably have this set up already.
Then, to have the Computer/Cakewalk play back through the external port you'll have to change Cakewalk to use the External Sound Port (NOT the Midi Mapper - if you select/use the MIDI mapper all the signals get sent to your internal Soundcard) It's under TOOLS | DEVICES | on the Cakewalk Window tool bar. Only the First MIDI device selected gets the signals - the subsequent ones get ignored. So only select (highlight in blue) the Output Device you want to use))
Now you need to send the signal to the output device you want. TO use the JV-1010, set the front panel to GM (on the Patch/Performance/Ruthm/GM nob by pressing it - it cycles around) This will get the General MID voices. Run the Computer MIDI OUT to the JV-1010 MIDI IN. This will play back the Cakewalk songs out to the JV1010 (You must have amplified speakers connected directly to the "stereo type" plugs in the back of the JV1010 to hear anything..). If you want you can run a MIDI cable from the JV1010 MIDI THRU back tio the MIDI IN of the Yamaha to get multiple synthesizers playing back the same thing.
Finally, When you're tired of the GM voices on the JV1010 you can program a "performance" by switching the JV1010 to Performance and selecting the voice you care to use for each individual channel (these are the saem as the Cakewalk "Channels")
I hope this helps, without assuming too much or too little knowledge of MIDI

Re: hooking up keyboard with jv1010 to computer using cakewalk p

If I had a midi keyboard and bought a midi module, I would run the midi output of the keyboard to the module and then the midi output of the module to the computers midi input. I would then run the midi output from the computer to the module for playback of recorded midi information...

I would then run the audio output from the module to the audio input on the computer. When I record, I would record the audio AND the midi information to it's own track so you have a hard copy of the sound that the module is making but also the more important midi information so you can play back the track and change the sound later IF it doesn't suit..

EMu proteus softsynth

Hello:

I've been told that emu offers a Proteus software synth for around $20.00. Can anyone verify this and tell me where to purchase it?
If not, can anyone suggest a softsynth with superior orchestral sounds? Thanks.

Rick Zerndt

Re: EMu proteus softsynth

For orchestral sounds, I would usually go with a sampler. I don't know what you can get for $20 though.. :(

Check out the EXs sampler player for Logic audio. It's 24bit's and very clean sounding. Also, check out spectrasonics

http://www.spectrasonics.net/index.html

who make some very interesting software synth modules...

Re: EMu proteus softsynth

I don't know if you've found what you are looking for yet, I just came across this.
I think you will have to spend ALOT more than $20.00!!!
Maybe it was a typo?
I think you will find bliss for orchestral music composition if you invest in Edirol's HQ-Orchestral plugin for VSTi or DXi2. It may not compare in ALL ways with the Gigastudio and the very best sample libraries, but it is VERY good!!! I use it for string and some brass parts along with my Gigastudio, but it is quite capable of function completely on it's own. Check out the demos on Edirol's website. I was up until very recently a big fan of EMU's V-2000 and the old Proteus 2 ( check out my reviews of the V-2000 at Harmony central). It was a good "interim" module for orchestra if you re-did all the factory programs, but I am probably going to sell mine now and invest in more softsynths Technology marches on!

Question on running midi and recording audio

I have some old midi files that I would like to export to a new audio midi sequencer, say (cool edit pro). Then, run the midi and record the audio into the same sequencer. Is that Possible??? or will the audio need to be recorded to a different source (ie hard disk..) The midi files were created using Opcodes Musicshop on a Mac. They have been converted to general midi files. I am now using a Dell PC with windows XP and am looking to purchase, an audio card (prob a m-audio delta 1010 and software (cool edit pro)
Thanks
Charlie

Re: Question on running midi and recording audio

I would depend on many things. Generally, it's to do with the synth that is responsible for actually making the sounds from the midi file information.

If it was me, I would use a program called Audio Hijack (I use it in Mac OSX but they could be a Windows version) and hijack the audio as it plays. I would then import the audio file into the audio midi application.

You need to be able to route the audio output from the synth device to the audio input in your audio/midi application. A routing issue which would vary from system to system..

best of luck

Is it as hard as it seems

All I want to do is record some vocals over some Mp3's in my Itunes playlist. Once recorded, I want to burn them to disc. That's it. What do I need in order to do that. I own a microphone and a PowerMac G4? My email is Bobo3@mail.com. Thank you very much.

Re: Is it as hard as it seems

You'll need a multi-track recorder to lay down the vox. <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Audacity_OSX/">Audacity</a> will do. You'll find software to burn to CD at <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/mac/CD_BURNERS/">http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/mac/CD_BURNERS/</a>

Re: how do i add my own music from my hardisk to my webpage?

It would probably be best to look at the homepage of your ISP or whoever hosts the webspace you use and look at their technical support and help area. The reason is that different webhosts have different ways of doing things. If you're thinking of uploading a WAV file, forget it. The file will be too big. Use an MP3 instead.

seasound & os x & dp4

Hi! is there any one knowing how to solve the presently impossible configuration of the seasound audio interface under dp4 & mac os x.
Thanks a million

Re: seasound & os x & dp4

I think you might have to bite the bullet and accept that the fact that Seasound went bankrupt means you wont get any further support for it. It happened at a bad time...

DP4 in OSX makes for an amazing product. I would try and rid myself of the interface and buy something that works with the software.

Best of luck
