Hi Ludo,

Strictly speaking you can't CONVERT a .mid file to
a .wav file but you can make a .wav file from a .mid
file through a process known as 'rendering'.

Sound confusing? It is. The reason is because a .mid
file doesn't contain music but rather a series of
instructions for a synth or sound module like your
soundcard to create music. There is a good tutorial
on this site you might like to read called
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/news/9903_105/">What's the difference between Wave, MIDI, MOD and MP3?</a>
which will explain it.

The reason I point this out is because it's very
important to understand that the .wav file you
create from a .mid will be different to what another
person will create from the same .mid file if they
use different sounds when rendering.

Now that I've put you through all that pain here is
some software which will create .wav files for you:
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Audio_Compositor/">Audio Compositor</a>
<li><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/WAVmaker_for_Windows_95/">WAVmaker</a>

I hope this helps,
Alf.

Wingroove is also a very efficient midi to wave renderer, and has the advantage of requiring absolutely no understanding of the process. Quick and painless!

Help with cw9 audio levels.

Let me discribe my system: E-MU system aps, celeron 466, with 192mb ram, on an ASUS P3BF Mother Board. Does anyone have any suggestions. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get. Thanks guys

ACID PRO2.0 users contact me please ?

HELLO: anybody out there useing
acid pro 2.0 ?
PLEASE contact me if you know&love this software.
"how do you start a sample to play in the
middle of a measure instead of the front?
Is this possible ?
I have other mind benders, please reply !
PAUL

Re: ACID PRO2.0 users contact me please ?

There is a way. Switch off the 'snap to' feature. This lets you place the sample wherever you want to. It's kind of clumbsy and doesn't give you a lot of freedom - I like mixman better for that sort of thing. But it's not what you'd call a 'real' music creation tool.

Let me know if you get any more feedback. I'd like to know more about the programme too. The manual's very light. I have a PDF written by an Acid pro user but I can't get it open. Acrobat 3 won't do it.

Cheers, Havanother

Re: ACID PRO2.0 users contact me please ?

Hi there...

i used Acid Music for about 2years and upgraded to Acid Pro 2.0 a few months ago, cause of the more usable FX Section.
To cut a little peaces you can set the snap feature in the menue bar to 1/2..1/4...1/8..etc. If you set it for example to 1/4 you are able to cut off every 4th beat of the sample with the rubber.
if you set it to 1/16 you can cut every 16th beat of the sample and so on.it will help if you zoom very close to the sample to see the frequenzie curve exactly.

Hope this helps

Greetings

How to get more realistic sounds from Soundblaster live

I have installed soundblaster live but the Banjo, steel string guitar sounds aren't very good. Is there either a way to improve the sound or sound fonts that will do the job.

Re: How to get more realistic sounds from Soundblaster live

Reply: Have you tried to edit the Sounds with the Midi parameters? Put the sound out to better amplifier and speakers. Sound fonts will only basicly provide you a very small sample. The bigger the sample gets,(including it's sample rate) the better (more realistic) the sound becomes.

mac crashes

My mac crashes wheneverI am connected to the Internet and play a Quicl time or Shockwave audio file. If I download the file into my cache and get offline I can then play it. This happenes both in latests versions of IE and Netscape. - any ideas?

I have a performa 6400, Power PC 606 ev, sys8.6, 80mb ram, 1gb hard drive free quick time 4.1. latest Shockwave

Re: mac crashes

Answer: Keep "Virtual Memory" on. Also make the amount of your cache bigger (3604) Select your browser with apple+I and alocate more memory to the browser.
For Mp3 files you'll need about 6 Mb more to your browser than your standard settings. Use Internet Congif, and tell which programme has to handle the audio. The conflict might be related. In Quicktime settings also select the right speed of your modem(connection). Restart and rebuild the desktop. Hope these tips help.

winamp

I just got a new pc ,a gatway with soundblaster live card.why wont my winamp play cds any more or realplayerjukebox will only record but not play ?? but they both work fine on my old pc ????

Re: winamp

: I just got a new pc ,a gatway with soundblaster live card.why wont my winamp play cds any more or realplayerjukebox will only record but not play ?? but they both work fine on my old pc ????

:The new operating system on your new computer will have reverted to the widows default settings. Run winamp, then choose options>preferences, and you will be able to assosciate various filetypes, including .wav .mod. .mid .cda and many more. I would NOT reccomend making Winamp the default player for .wav files, as it seems to have problems with that. You can also open a file with a program of your preference by holding down the Shift key whilst right clicking on a file with the mouse - this will bring up the option "open with..." you can then select the program you wish to play these files with and check the box marked "always open this type of file with this program" No Problemo!

Is distortion too simple to warrant a plug-in?

Greetings from newbie-ville. I've just scored Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 and would like to know how I can achieve a heavily distorted guitar sound. My 6-string is plugged into my soundcard's line-in. I've looked over tons of plug-ins but few seem to mention distortion. I suspect I can probably get the sound I want using Cakewalk alone but how?

:Can't you just record your guitar too loud so you get a distorted (clipped) signal, then use the edit>reduce audio volume function from the Cakewalk menu, so you will have a distorted sound but at a volume level you choose. You could also use an old amp/tape deck/whatever to plugin your guitar into, and feed that signal into your computer. You can control the amount of distortion this way, just be careful not to overload it!

Cubase VST-----Terratec EWS88MT

Hi,

I'm lucky to have the Terratec EWS88MT but I'm asking you this: Is it possible to send the audio tracks in Cubase seperately to the seperate outputs of my soundcard? If yes, what do I have to do?

Thanx for reading my question...

soundcard

I am looking at a Hi-Val A3D Advantage wave 256 voice soundcard. The product information does not say what the sampling rate is. It also does not state wheter it has volumn control. I noticed that some cards state volumn control and others don't. If there is none, how does a person control the volumn? My speakers do not have a volumn control either. I do want to do some recording of LP's to CD. Do you know anything about this product? From my limited knowledge it seems to be a good buy. I have tried the HI-Val website but there are no phone numbers there or I would call

: It has a sampling rate of 44,100, as do nearly all modern soundcards, but of course that does not tell you anything about the frequency response, which is a major factor for reproducing high quality sound. It also needs to be full duplex, i.e. capable fo recording and playback simultaneously;again, most modern soundcards meet this standard. You should however ascertain wheter the voices are wavetable sound, or software emulated- the latter, as well as requiring more memory can cause latency problems (Delays of notes sounding), and can be problematical with some sequencing software such as Cubase.A soundcard is too important to be buying without knowing all the specs, so do a bit of research, don't just buy the first one that has an impressive ad... Whoops, sorry, I seem to have slipped into pontificating lecture mode there!

NO MIDI INPUT

I've just upgraded from an Atari to a PC running Cubase 3.5 and wish I hadn't, nothing works. I'm not bothered about audio I have samplers and synths, but Cubase refuses to recognize my MIDI input. I'm using a Crstalworks soundcard, (yeah I know but it came with the PC) which the box says is fully MIDI compatible via the Gameport, so I got a multimedia to Midi port, and the Midi data goes out to my studio, but it doesn't recognise any Midi input.
Now am I missing something really basic 'coz I don't know much about ASIO's or whatever or what? Oh come back TOS all is forgiven!

Re: NO MIDI INPUT

Try running the setupMME utility, and check that the MIDI port is enabled. Also, check whether the MIDI input indicator light flashes on the transport bar, if not it could be a hardware problem. I once spent a week messing about with drivers and stuff before I realised that the joystick to MIDI lead was faulty. These tend to be a bit cheap, so it might be worth trying a different one.
Hope you get it sorted!

no sound tangent demo

I have installed the music composition program Tangent (demo). First it functioned normally. Since a few weeks however it doesn't play the music, no sound. It says that the composition is ready but you can't activate the controls, they are not highlighted. I have uninstalled and installed the programm several times without success.

Question about cool edit 2000.

In cool edit 2000, we can't ear the modifications we do (bass, treble, etc)at same time we do them. You must do,then apply and after doing this you are able to ear them. Does any one knows a program where we can ear the modifications we do at the same time we experiment, and finally the sound is how we want and then we apply the modifications. Thank you to all that could give me an answer.
