Break Out Boxes

Hi
I just stumbled upon this site. Very Cool!
I've done plenty of home & some pro studio tape recording, and I'm now ready to enter the digital world. I've just started my research and would like to find a source for an inexpensive A/D D/A converter. I'd like to start out with a 16 track 24 bit but can probably only afford 4 or maybe 8 tracks at this time. I tried ebay without much luck. Are there any other resources for this type of used hardware & possibly used or discounted complete multitrack software.
PS most of what I'm recording will be analog signals (a live band).
As I'm new to this medium all related info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for Your time

Re: Break Out Boxes

: Hi, the cheapest and most effective option is probably the maxi studio isis from guillemot. i can't remember how much this costs, but it has digital in outs and 4 analog in and outs for a bout half the price of anything else on the market. I have to admit though, I bought one of these and had to send it back because it kept crashing my system, though i have heard lots of good reports. other than this, try and get a mac if you can. you can get an 8 in/out digi 001 soundcard with pro tools software for £750, I think that digidesign now have this for the pc as well. this system's really good as its the industry standard.
hope this helps, email me if you need more help

normalizing wavs - and keeping ratio of songs the same

Hi. When I record a record onto my pc (for backup purposes) I always record it with the volume peaking at about 70-80% so nothing distorts or loses quality, etc etc. Afterwards I normalize everything to 95% or so. My problem is that some tracks on a single album are softer than others, and if you normalize everything to 95% the quiter tracks suddenly are loud, and the ratio of one song's volume to another, which is usually done intentionally by the artist, is lost. I would like a program that can normalize a group of songs, recognize a peak out of the whole group, and normalize everything according to that one peak. If anyone knows of programs that do this, please let me know. Feel free to email uxka@aol.com or reply here.

Thank you,
geeen

Re: normalizing wavs - and keeping ratio of songs the same

I reccomend that you not use normalization when ripping the MP3's, and use a compressor or normalizer for playback only... you can get DirectX plugins or Winamp plugins that do that.

Re: normalizing wavs - and keeping ratio of songs the same

Hi,

Actually, what you are doing is so called "finalizing audio" in sound-engineering term.
You know, normalizing is an art actually.
you need to know the "breath" of your song.
Besides doing normalizing, try to DO NORMALIZING WORK SEPERATELY IN DIFFERENT SONGS.

Re: normalizing wavs - and keeping ratio of songs the same

What software do you use that can't do that?????

The common wave editors all have this feature...

Re: "BURNING KAREOKE CD'S"

I want to find out if there is a side to download and burn karaokee music . thank you. mary

Re: "BURNING KAREOKE CD'S"

You need a recorder that will support reading and writing CD-G disks. If your recorder can only write than that's okay, but you'll have to get a cd-rom that will read the disks. Then there's a program you can get called CDRWIN from Golden Hawk Technology. Search for the site and they'll list the specific burners tat support reading and writing CD-G disks. I would recommend YAMAHA myself.

need something like acid but FREE

Been using HipHop EJ, but it's too limited.
Acid is cool, but the cost is too steep.
I need something that will let me use my own
samples and has at least 4 tracks.
Something like a multitrack version of
Wintendo 95's SoundRecorder.
Any suggestions?
Post replys here, or e.mail to AgentVoodoo@yahoo.com

Thanks Paul,Mr.Practical,Martin&Bella

I'm checking out the softs now, plus another I found on this site, somethng called DDClip.
It's a 4 track audio plus 1 video. I have no use for the video (yet) but the audio stuff works well. I've tried Rebirth before, and your price is right, but I just don't like that one for some reason.. It just doesn't work for me.
Thanks again for the help!

Re: need something like acid but FREE

You wont get a good program for free-
BPM-Studio and 4-Tracks MP3Mixer is in the top 20
downloads here so maybe you should try them, both
are cheap shareware.

Atari-setup

Im gonna purchase an Atari st and would be grateful for any advice. I have been told that I need a zip drive to store sounds and i can save the arrangements on floppy disk. Do you need a sound module? and how is is the sound transfferd to speakers etc. Any help i would be greatful as im not to clued up on Ataris and how to set them up

Re: Atari-setup

Hi,

The atari St has midi in and out as standard which is why it was such a popular professional/amateur music computer. It was loosly capable of recording audio but it wasn't it's best point. If you are think about using it for multitracking audio then I would'nt bother. The Atari STE is the minimum you should consider. Avoid the STFM and STF's etc... their sound facilities were very very crude.

The STE has a Left and Right audio line level output which is capable of reasonable stereo audio. If you want an Atari that can deal with Audio then I would recommend the Atari Falcon which looks almost exactly the same but darker in colour. It's capable of 16 tracks of quality audio providing you have a large and fast hard disk connected if you are running the Atari version of Cubase Audio. There are other programs you could use but the Cubase software was very good. You'll also need the Atari Monochrome monitor (HiRes) in order to view the more professional programs that require this resolution.

The best thing to do is to buy one from someone who already has all the bits mentioned including the software. Trying to obtain SCSI HD's that are compatible with the ST may drive you mad. Don't pay much either. There are a lots and lots of these machines sitting in peoples cupboards doing nothing, (I have 2).

Don't think that the ST is any sort of decent sound module in itself. You'll want to connect (via Midi) a decent Module or Sampler. It can make some sounds but I wouldn't bother myself.

Cheers

Acid Pro sound card device error?????????

When I try to record audio into Acid I get an error message that reads..."an error occured while starting playback, the device specified is in use"
I am using a Lexicon Core 2. I'm also getting no signal in the moniter. I've had no problems getting it to work in other programs. Is there anything I'm overlooking? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
THANKS IN ADVANCE...

CDR Quality???

I see in adverts CDR's with several indicated qualities,
i.e. Ideal for Audio, or Ideal for backups, or ideal for data storeage.
Is this a sellers ploy, or are there real differences?

Cheers Phil

Re: CDR Quality???

For the most part, it is a play, really.. but that depends on how you look at things.. there is not much to change the actual sound quality on a CD, in general, here's a few tips:
1. The less transparent the disc is, the better.
2. The color determines roughly the life of the CD(40 to 60+ years, I think)
3. Gold discs are not made of gold.
4. Silver discs are not made of silver.

Re: CDR Quality???

I would also like to know. I'm looking for the most suitable CDR quality to create masters on before sending them to replicators

singer software

I need to find good software to use with Windows98. I want to be able to hook up my keyboard and play and have it appear on the computer. I also would like to be able to scan a song in and play around with the key, etc. Again, I'm a singer so anything that's recommended for starting with computer software is hip with me.
Can anyone help??

Buy NTI CD Maker, which is very good it will do all the jobs.

All the best

Re: MP3 conversion to CD

All you have to do is install MusicMatch Jukebox and convert your MP3 files to Wav of CD quality not near CD quality. The software costs about $50, but it is the best. No noises or hiss.

Re: MP3 conversion to CD

stuff.
