Cakewalk...midi settings

I have an HP omnibook laptop and am unable to hear anything through cakewalk. I can play windows media files and MP3's no problem. I think it has something to do with the input and output devices but I can't seem to solve the problem. Suggestions???

Re: Cakewalk...midi settings

ah,but you're question is sooooo vague!for example you don't say what soundcard you're using, and whether or not you've connected an external midi keyboard! anyway,go to options/midi devices.there you will see the various midi devices on your pc.select the soundcard's internal synthesizer as the "midi out" IF you have no keyboard connected.the midi in will probably say "tts virtual piano".forget about this. if you HAVE conected a keyboard, select (name of soundcard here)as "midi in" and (name of soundcard here) as "midi out".foe example,if you have a soundblaster live,it'll be :SB LIVE! MIDI IN
SB LIVE! MIDI OUT
cheers!

The problem is probablyn that you don't have a SoundFont
sound card - what sound card are you using?

Hi,

I have run into this same problem. My sound card is a SoundBlaster PCI128. If this is not a SoundFond card, would you please tell me what I need? Thank you.

I have also run into this problem. As my card (and I think vienna2.3) came with my reconditioned Dell dimension (cel. 800mhz w/ SB64 PCI (WDM) card), I'm expecting prompt (right!)and payed for tech support folks to tell me what the deal is soon. Given that SB live is so new, and that there are 95,98,ME,and 2000 drivers for this thing, and that it's made by the same people as the cards (creative), I doubt that your card (or mine) is the problem. I have ME, and have got the same message using all the OS drivers I tried to install. Vienna works in conjuction with audio editors etc., so I've also tried various "ensembles" with sound forge/ACID etc., to see if it's looking for that, or the drivers are in these applications.............still no luck

sound skipping on wav file from tape deck

I'm using my tape deck as source, to sound card on PC. When recording to hard disk using Music Match Jukebox or AIPL, the sound starts 'skipping' or dropping out, especially towards the end of the file. Tried using the software correction switches and that helps somewhat but not totally. The files are about a meg and a half. It's extremely frustrating to have to re-record over and over. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
BTW- I'm using an AMD-K6-2-333mhz with 256M of RAM on an IBM Aptiva. Thanks again.

sounds like a memory problem to me. i would try
to find out exactly how much memory your audio
programs get... for sure they aren't getting 256MB

also, some of the noise could be the physics of
your tape player and/or the the tape. tapes are
really painful to use. i would buy a used
minidisc recorder for 50 to 150 bucks, then you
can do minor editing, some higher quality recordings too.

you can buy blank minidiscs anywhere in japan,
or at Best Buy in the us. you can also order them
dirt cheap from Tape World or some other company
that places ads in the back of any decent music
recording magazine.

Thanks X, I'll check it out.

OMS & IAC for MAC???

Does anybody know what OMS and IAC stand for and what they actually do? I'm a little bit stuck and would appreciate any answer. Thank you.

Re: OMS & IAC for MAC???

: Does anybody know what OMS and IAC stand for and what they actually do? I'm a little bit stuck and would appreciate any answer. Thank you.

OMS is an abrieviated verson of Open Music System
You can get all the details at
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/OMS_mac/

IAC is an alternative buss to OMS, but I don't know
much more because I haven't worked on a Mac for years.

Patch Bay Layout

Does anyone know of a piece of software that will
allow one to layout their system's input/output
connections? I am setting up my home recording
studio and would like to find software to give me a
diagram of my wiring configuration between devices
through a patch bay.

Thanks very much,
Ed

P.C. home studio???

Hi everyone,

I used to have a home studio set up, it was mostly synth moduels and based around an Akai S3000 sampler.
As I have been away from music for the past 6 years or so, I would love some advice on a new set up.
I would love to run Qbase on the PC as that is what I had experience with as a sequencer in the past.
Can I acheive a good virtual studio set up using the PC as the heart? Or will I have to get a mixing desk and moduals again.
I aim to program a variety of music....but mostly digital dance stuff, so need good sample manipulation e.g. good resonance filters etc.
Any help would be appreceiated, and happy new year everyone :o)

Re: P.C. home studio???

: Hi everyone,
i myself make dance on a virtual studio setup.i have an athlon 900mhz pc with 128 mb ram running cakewalk pro, rebirth, simsynth, fruityloops, vsampler, cyclonix vocoder and rubberduck.my keyboard is a roland xp 10.this kinda setup works for me 'cuz i have almost everything any pro has!and it cost me far less and takes up no space.at least not physically!now if u get cubase, that would be even better,'cuz rebirth runs inside it like a plug-in!rebirth is simply a must if u are even slightly serious about dance!if u wanna keep it totally virtual,i suggest simsynth!it's only 40 quid, but makes the kinda sounds that the 180 buck steinberg model e does!for samplers try mellotron or vsampler!cheap and cheerful!if u need a midi controller keyboard why not check out the yamaha djx 2?looks can be decieving!!there are about 500 sounds on board this thing,so it isn't just a controller keyboard, although it sells for that much!as far as mixers are concerned,i don't use one,but obviously,it makes a lot of difference!for the price, the powerpad by spirit is a brilliant powered compact mixer, with a great sound!plus being powered,u don't need an additional set of monotors!if you wanna skip the mixer and buy some monitors, check out the videologic sirocco spirits!great!
if you'd rather have a hardware set-up,then my pick for a great dance synth is the yamaha cs2x!for drums use a roland dr 770 drum box or a korg electribe ER 1!you do see that this would cost you far more!and we haven't even bought the sampler yet!soft is the way to go,mate!cheers!and remember, your pc must have at least 128mb rams!the more the ram,the better the performance!

Re: P.C. home studio???

Hi again folks,

Hope everyone had a good new year?

Sean, thanks for the response to my questions.

I would like to keep my future home studio as virtual as possible. So,as I still have loads of sample CDs... I think most of my sounds including drums/perc would be up for some good sampler type manipulation. For instance, time stretching, filtering, layering etc, controller assignable. If you could point me in that direction, I would appreceiate it. If the PC based samplers have not yet overtaken the modular samplers, then I would consider getting one again. I agree that one controller keyboard would be sufficiant, but would have to be aftertouch and velocity sensitive as well as polyphonic, obviously.

Thanks again for your help. Sorry....If it seems as if I have been in a cave for the past 6 years or so....hehe.

Music re-mixing and editing

My daughter's dance group wants new music for competition. I've been volunteered to find a program that we can mix new music. I have a CD-rewrite drive on my computer. I need a program for Windows 98 that is SIMPLE to use. I need to be able to take a track off a CD and re-mix it, add sound effects, combine 2 or more songs and it needs to be able to count the beats per minute of the music. Thanks for any info!

Re: Music re-mixing and editing

the choice is clear!go for magix music maker generation 5!it does everything you want it to do,and then some!heck, even pros use it!do check out the manual thoroughly though,as it has all the info!plus,at only $35,it won't break the bank either!

MiniDisc to CD

Newbie (sorry). Can't a MD just be plugged into the soundcard or is there some interface needed? In other words, what is needed to burn a CD from a MD in terms of connections and software?

Re: MiniDisc to CD (followup)

I'll answer my own question here (after about 6 hours of sweat and surfing). A MD can be plugged into the Line In of a sound card and generate analog .WAV files just fine. Control volume during recording with the MD player. Nothing is needed except the small jack connector cable from MD Line Out to soundcard Line In, and nothing special is needed in the way of software if you record each track as a separate .WAV file. Note that this is for analog recording, not digital.

a question for the experts

Can anyone tell me how the hell do i separate
the vocal data in a song\track from the musical data
without damaging any of them?
the vocal data is the most important part for me.

Thanks in advace

Re: a question for the experts

are you trying to remove the vocals from a song?if so you need to check out analog x vocal remover from www.analogx.com
yogen vocal remover is also good for this purpose and can be found on this site!

Re: RA / RM -> WAV Converter (or MP3)

EASY....!!
Just find the output jack of your sound card, connect
it to your stéreo system then record it,then it will become Wave, and if you wanna put it on a CD,then you send it back to you PC and save it,from there you go on

Good luck....(*-*)

Music Studio Generation 5

Cakewalk Vs Cubase

Hi,

Cakewalk pro audio 9 or Cubase VST 5.
Which is better?

Also, would i need to get synthesiser software & sampling software or are they part of the above?

Re: Cakewalk Vs Cubase

if you wanna get pro...PROTOOLS is the answer...;)

Re: Cakewalk Vs Cubase

: if you wanna get pro...PROTOOLS is the answer...;)

It won't make you a pro...

Re: Cakewalk Vs Cubase

VST5 32bit is better than cakewalk 9 for most thimgs i.e midi and audi facilities - but for all out simplicity, stability and easy to set up then cakewalk real is a walk in the park and it still sounds great.

if you get the pro audio suite, it comes with gigasampler LE. mars music has a great price on it.
watch out for the computer requirements.
in answer to your question; i think they both rock.

a matter of taste

yo,cubase is the bomb u dig?

both will get the job done.i prefer cubase because they have better plug ins with vst.also theres vst synths that are very nice.

get cubase man, for the love of quality audio get it.
they have a demo you know.
theres also logic audio.
preferences for each is a matter of taste though if i were you id get cubase.....
you should change your inner dialogue to logic vs. cubase imho.
cubase 5.0 is a gig leap over past versionsw btw.
but most pros use logic for midi if they need it
other wise they use pro tools
for audio theres also nuendo

cakewalk has the adolescent market locked down.

uploading sony minidisc songs

HELP! is it possible to upload songs from your minidisc player onto your PC if you have the USB MD-PC link?

Re: uploading sony minidisc songs

: HELP! is it possible to upload songs from your minidisc player onto your PC if you have the USB MD-PC link?

You're having a larf!

Re: uploading sony minidisc songs

I'm not sure about the md cable, but i know that it is possible to use
the SPDIF output of a minidisc deck into the SPDIF input of a computer soundcard.

you'll probably get better quality too, because
the ad i last saw describing the pc to minidisc linkup
said that it just rerecords (and recompresses) the audio.

By compression, i mean the lossy ATRAC compression.

not amplitudinal or data compression.
