Re: How do get started in using computers to make music

I'd suggest Cubasis VST and a lower version of Sound Forge. Sound Forge XP is good.
with these two programs (and the additional software that comes with them) you can
be making songs and CD's right away. Later on, you could get ACID (or Vegas), and
it will work well with both SoundForge and Cubasis.

these programs with introduce you to all the major
issues without being too advanced. they also allow
you to use modular components such as REX files, VST
and DirectX effects, VST instruments, and just about
any file format you ever need to worry about.

more reliable than any other..

KMD1.7.1 is simply superb!!! u can try it out it is more reliable than any other p2p software this is for sure.

Go away.

how can I transfer ATARI files on PC ?

Hi there,
I need a way to transfer my old Notator on Atari, files,on my new PC running Logic Audio. Please ,can anybody help me?
Best whishes,
Eugen Popescu

This is a very interesting real-world occurance...

I noticed this post on sweetwater.com. it's particularly
interesting to me because similar things have happened to me,
even though i've only had great experiences with M-Audio/MIDIMAN gear.

The post is <A HREF="http://www.sweetwater.com/forum/showthread.php?s=15c2e9621e2744cc2d14240ff6ead42a&threadid=1519">http://www.sweetwater.com/forum/showthread.php?s=15c2e9621e2744cc2d14240ff6ead42a&threadid=1519</A>

1) I never trusted the invention of USB audio interfaces.
Digital audio is inherently faster than the upper limit
of USB transfer rates, unless you consider FIrewire to
be a form of fast USB. USB is also INTERRUPT DRIVEN.
this means that it's designed to allow multiple units to
be run simultaneously because they all interrupt each other's
procedures. This is not how to get consistent audio, for
God's sake.

2) Tech support ain't what it used to be. To even recieve
human tech support is a blessing anymore. I remember when
musician's friend and american musical supply had advanced
tech support crews. Now they just have websites and voice
mail. You'd be lucky to get a sales rep who even knows what
products they sell.

3) People will say anything if they can get your money.

4) Computer audio recording is neither cheap nor easy nor
hassle free.

5) Computer audio recording is always a rewarding learning
experience. No matter how bad things get, you'll always
be learning a rare valuable lesson which will be helpful
to know in the future.

6) The grumpy old sound tech (customer) is always right.

7) Manufacturers don't USE their equipment, they just make it.
Sometimes they don't even make it. Many companies make
products to be sold secretly labelled as another company's
device. Shure makes microphones for Radio Shack, etc.
Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes it's a hurtful
shame. I have spent lots of time looking inside electronic
audio devices. Lots of great gear is shit on the inside,
and lots of shitty gear has good components internally.
Of course, the best gear will also be great on the inside,
but most manufacturers aren't expecting you to actually
open up your product and see if it's made of quality components.

Unless you are actually making music, whatever you're doing
is a waste of you precious time, no matter what kind of gear
you use. A musician's time is always wasted except when (s)he
is creating audible music. It's for this reason, that I suggest
you at least keep handy some very simple audio programs that just
do one thing well. These are the programs that will allow you to
actually make music when everything else goes to shit. Nobody says
you can't use your answering machine to record vocal tracks when
all else fails. Dig it, people.

Hitsquad have been good to me and always acknowledge my presence here which makes it worth coming back.

When I see good people (like yourself Hish) come back and offer something decent to the forum then it makes it all the more worth coming here... >:)

regulary provide good help to people in this forum.

Re: To STEVE R

I can confirm Steve R doesn't work at Hitsquad.

There have been a couple of suggestions over the
last year that he does work here, probably due to
his prolific answering of questions and his in-depth
knowledge.

I actually take this as a huge compliment for the
Hitsquad crew!

There are a couple of changes that will be made to
the <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/staff.shtml">Hitsquad People</a> page this week.

Annette Huygens Tholen left us to resume her Beach
Volley Ball career, and Leanne Street has taken
over her roll.

Hi,

I completely agree, Fruityloops is more than overrated, but I wasn't too impressed with Tuareg either. Last time I used it was a LONG while back, so I dont know if there is a newer and better version.

Twitches while playing VCDs

Hi.

For the past few days, I have been playing vcds in my computer. Almost always, at the end of the VCD, the computer start to twitch (make sudden jerking movements) while the VCD is playing. Does anyone know why this happens? I tried in my work computer but the VCD is playing normal as usual. There are no (not even a trace) twitches at all. The flow of the video is smooth. No matter what player I use, Window Media Player, PowerDVD, everytime the same thing happens in my computer. Sometimes, the computer just hangs. Even if I copy the dat file from the vcd to the computer and play it, same result.

Does anyone know how can I solve this problem? Please help me urgently!!!!

Regards,
Kamal

High-resolution vocal cancellation (mono cancellation)

Voice Effect similiar to Cher's "Believe"

Hello everyone.
I didn't really know where to turn, so I try here..

Do anyone know what kind of software / equipment is used to produce the
voice effect that is often used in commercial hits nowadays.
-That thing they do with Cher's voice in her "Believe" hit.
(And probably a thousand other artists and songs...)

Any help or directions to where to ask is greatly appreciated.

gridlocked

I've read of another technique which accomplishes a similar effect
It involved using a vocoder, i think with the voice as both inputs.
I can't remember it, though. Maybe it was just using a MIDI-controlled pitch bender.

At any rate, yeah, MuseSlave has the best solution.

Thanks MuseSlave, I was curious too! kewl.

Re: gridlocked

No one wants to try to be different. Just the same.

Re: Voice Effect similiar to Cher's "Believe"

Hans,

It's a software effect... Antares AutoTune. It over-corrects the pitch in a
fashion which results in that characteristic sound.

Re: Voice Effect similiar to Cher's "Believe"

Thanks a lot for the quick response!
Exactly what i wanted to know :)

Great!
Thanks again! :-D

Hitsquad Update 14 June - 222 Software Updates, More Message Sea

Another busy week here at Hitsquad...
<ol><li><b><a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/wwwboard/#post">More Messages in Search Engine</a></b>
We now have most of the messages posted since the start
of 2002 in the message search engine so you can easily
find answers or topics of interest.

Remember the search engine isn't real-time so you won't
see your new messages in search results until we compile
a new search index - we do this every few days.

we managed to update another 222 software listings.

Thank you very much to the 400+ software authors who have
been subjected to a barrage of emails from me over the

Is it possible to remove vocals from an mp3 so I can use just the rhythm section and other backgrounds to sing to?

Re: And the Homer Simpson of the week award goes to....

: Is it possible to remove vocals from an mp3 so I can use just the rhythm section and other backgrounds to sing to?

<b>DOH!</b>

This question is not to be posted. Why? Because
we have instructions right beside the submission
form saying not to ask any of the questions in
the list as they are already answered, and it
provides links to the answers too.

Q. Guess what is at the top of the list (sorry you don't win anything for getting it right :)....

A. <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/wwwboard/messages/81548.html">How to remove Vocals from songs leaving only Backing Music</a>

But this little ducky doesn't win the award just
for that...

Using the News and Tutorial <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/search/">search</a> on the phrase
"Remove Vocals" returns <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/cgi/htdig/htsearch.cgi?method=and&format=builtin-long&config=htdig&restrict=%2Fsmm%2Fnews%2F&exclude=&words=remove+vocals">these results</a> - although I guess you could miss the
search option because it only appears at the top
and bottom of over 100,000 pages on this site.

But to really top all this off the headline story
on the front page of this site at the time the
above message was posted was.... wait for it....
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/news/1349/">Experiments with removing vocals</a>.

Well done Michael - you win the Homer award for an
outstanding display of laziness!

Musical and non-musical Sound Generator

Kindly review my just released unique music software

Interesting synthesis

Please explain the encryption function.
How is this encryption useful again?

Re: Interesting synthesis (Encryption is for ..)

If you can create a good sound generation collection in FlexiMusic Generator, You can save the file as encrypted instrument and distribute like sound font collection. The size is too smal comparing to the actual wave file it will generate, so easy to distribute. Others can not edit or view how you generated that sound (the source) but they can hear, save wave file etc.. (using FlexiMusic Instrument Player), This way you can sell the sound you generated. And the users will keep coming back to you for similar sound requirement.

Regards
Ponnuchamy

: Please explain the encryption function.
: How is this encryption useful again?

I like the general idea

I see how that's a little bit useful. I think you will
get more attention if you say more about the unusual sounds
that your program can make. There are already too many file
formats that each need their own player. I think you should
stick with the standard AIFF file format. Make sure it can
do high sample rates and high bit resolution (maybe 8Hz - 384kHz
, and 8bits to 64bits linear). If that's too hard, just do 44.1kHz to 96kHz
and 16 to 32 bits. I know this is not so easy, but it makes the
best difference. Any synthesis program that can work at 96kHz, 16-32bits would
be great.

I hope your program becomes popular. You sound like a creative, talented person.
