you should be able to do this in a Wave Editing application like Cool edit / or Soundforge...

Beware, by default some applications will also change the Key of the music.

To avoid this you may want to use "Timestretching" or "Pitchshifting" to avoid the change in key.

On a much lighter note,
Want to make your reverbs sound more spatious?
Take a stereo audio file. Pitch bend one channel just a
tiny bit. Invert the phase of the other channel. Now run your
reverb processing on the file. Now Pitch bend the first channel
back to normal, and invert the second channel back to normal.
The result should be a much more spatious audio file.

Basically, a lot of production has been done over the years
in the name of radio/mono compatibility. Well, since that's
all pretty much history, it's time to bring processing techniques
up to date with deep spatial stereo. Nevermind mono compatibility,
let's make the sound surround.

Good tip.

I don't like a lot of stereo spatial effects as they often sound cheap and change the tone of instruments for the worse.

That's a good point, Steve. I must admit, of old songs that I hear
on the radio and on vinyl, reverbs and delays sound the most dated and
the worst. Synth drums also sound dated fast, too. And polka-style
synth arpeggiators. Live acoustical recordings sound interesting no
matter how old. Some old 78 vinyl recordings of people like Leadbelly
still sound reasonably ok. It's probably true that choice of instruments
and melody and balance is much more important than any processing.

I'm amazed at how many people still use synth strings in modern music.
Every recording I've ever heard of synth strings always sounds bad years
later, particularly if it ends up on a video or on tv. The only thing worse
than synth strings is synth horns. Ack, gag.

Still, I find deep soupy effects to be a lot of fun for trendy, dated, electronic
stuff.

What kinds of tricks do you enjoy?

I don't mind synth Strings if they sound quite real, which they can. I don't like synth Brass at all. It's probably because of all that 80's brass stab period we had to endure. Phil Collins springs to mind, is he dead yet??

I have an old Miles Davis CD from the 50's (obviously not the CD itself... ;) and it sounds amazing considering what equipment they were experimenting with for recording. Early days then..

These days, i'm more the recording purist. I love effects and madness in recordings but there is so much to be had out of capturing a good sound and engineering the dynamics.

I live in central London and I'm writing a dissertation of 20.000 about music softwares: Notation Softwares, Ear Training Softwares, Improvisation Softwares and Sequencing Softwares(Advantages-Dissadvantages etc). My deadline is in August 2002. Do you know where can I find someone to help me for a small fee?

I will help you with some of that, but not for a fee. I've used a little bit
of everything, some things not so well known. For example, for improvisational
software, I have used a PC program called EVPmaker, i believe. EVP stands for
electronic voice phenomena. This funny software is actually designed to be used
to hear voice in random recordings, much like a Ouija board! It's written by a
talented European (dutch or german or austrian). Actually, this program excels
at creating unusual ambient textures, and burbles. I have found a way to use it
to generate drum and bass fractal/semichaotic rhythms.
