Re: sampler

An old school Akai S1000, S2000, S3000 or any of that family will do you nice. They are cheap and can be found almost anywhere. They were the industry standard so there are plenty around. Search them on Google.

Shhhhh! we're recording

I need to do something about the noise from my PC Now I have better mics an
signal path it really stands out. I've already changed the PSU. I'm
starting to Focus on the CPU cooler. Any recommendations on a really quiet
unit for an AthlonXP2100?

I've got an Alpha PAL on my 2400+ & that works well - nice also because it
has mounting posts that secure it to the MB rather than the hideous spring
clip efforts - much easier to mount. Got a low speed 80mm fan on it & CPU
temps stay in the mid 40s. Doesn't fit on all MBs so check their website.

Also check out the Fan on your video card - mine was hideously noisy. If you
have a fan on the MB itself (on the Northbridge) that makes a racket too and
can be replaced with a Zalman fanless cooler (basically a bloody great
heatsink!)

I posted this a few days ago.
It has a manual speed adjustment, a full sized fan and a massive
heatsink with copper insert. You have to have plenty of room above the
CPU.

Hi guys! I got AKAI samples in one huge .bin file 815 MB. How can I convert or extract this .bin file in useful formats like .wav, .sf2, e.t.c. ? I tryied to burn this .bin file like ISO on CD but I still can't extract the sounds of the file? I got AKAI CD Extract, but didn't work? Please, share your opinions :)

PT Midi Automation

I just got one of the M-Audio Oxygen 8's and was wondering if there
was any way of controlling Pro Tools LE via MIDI with the 8 MIDI
assignable knobs. I am not expecting a full blown HUI experience but
anything ( ie. Panning, effect level, EQ Parameters) that would prevent me from
having to grab the mouse would be great.

Digital Orchestrator Plus Midi/WAV problems

Did anybody experienced this problem: WAV files, that had been
recorded previously on the other computer with DOB and worked fine,
are having problems with playback on the newer PC. It looks like first
15-30 sec it plays perfectly fine and then some sounds start "hanging"
in the air.

We used Pentium 2 with 128 Ram to record the tracks. Originaly when we
got this PC we had to change driver to Roland in order for MIDI to
work properly. Now we bought new PC: Pentium 4 with 512 Ram and newer
and better sound card but it looks like we can use it. Anyone?

Sound engineering course

I am starting a course on sound engineering and mastering at a local college
(its a short course so im not expecting to leave as an expert by any means)
Should i go in there and act dumb as far as what i already know, or think i
know and just accept their views or should i use my so called 'knoweldge'
which is self taught. I don't want to complicate the course as little
knoweldge is a dangerous thing. I always thought when you see a level meter
ping off the end it was 'clipping' (digital) or distorting but i often see
in recording studios these meters pinging off the end for every track, i
always asusmed you should avoid the 'red'.. thats just an example of what i
mean, so should i go in 'dumb' and accept what they say or should i add my
views...

Re: Sound engineering course

As an SE instructor, I'd say first listen (and take notes! lots of notes!),
then ask the instructor during breaks, etc. about anything that conflicts
with your experience. If the instructor won't answer out of class, ask in
class. If the instructor won't take questions in class, tell them that I do.
If they still won't answer questions, get your money back, buy a book & move
to Tucson and I'll teach you. For a fee, of course... :(

Mic preamps, line levels, and computing power - oh my!

Hi All,

I'm trying to think through in my head how I will be working the recording
sessions for the voice track for an animated TV pilot I'm working on. Since
I will be doing this alone for a while, I need to be able to control the
recording equipment/software from the isolation booth. (Okay, fine, it's a
closet with foam on the walls.) Which lead me to consider the LynxTWO card
in the computer, and a small monitor and mouse in the closet. Except the
LynxTWO requires a line level feed, so I'm faced with running the mic
through a preamp, over which I would have no control while recording. Unless
I put it in the closet with me, boy it's getting hot and crowded in there...

I, too, am looking for that "big broadcast" sound, and it seems like I'd
want to record at the highest level possible, so it seems to me that I'd
want to be able to ride the preamp. Is there an elegant solution for this?
One thing that's also bugging me is that the price range for mic preamps
runs from about $80 to several thousand dollars. There's no way they are
doing the same thing. So why can't I transfer that preamp function into the
computer and take advantage of all that existing processing power?

Thanks,

Tom

A preamp isn't all that big and unless you insist on a toob one,
doesn't get that hot. But once you get the level set in the ballpark,
you shouldn't have to, nor want to "control" the preamp. Just put it
in Record and start talking.

: I, too, am looking for that "big broadcast" sound, and it seems like I'd
: want to record at the highest level possible, so it seems to me that I'd
: want to be able to ride the preamp.

Nope, you don't want to ride the level. You want to control your voice
so that it's even, you might want to compress it when you can pay
attention to what you're doing, and you can adjust the level in "post"
as long as you haven't recorded 30 or 40 dB too low.

: One thing that's also bugging me is that the price range for mic preamps
: runs from about $80 to several thousand dollars. There's no way they are
: doing the same thing.

Oh, they all do the same thing - they amplify the output of the
microphone, just some of them sound better than others, and to further
complicate your life, the one that sounds best with one mic and on one
voice might not necessarily sound best with another voice or another
mic.

: So why can't I transfer that preamp function into the
: computer and take advantage of all that existing processing power?

Because you need to get the signal level from the microphone up to the
point where that power will do you some good. If your microphone and
A/D converter was really, really, really quiet, you could get away
with adding 20 dB or so of gain on the digital side without too much
damage, but it's cheaper and better to do it with a preamp. Unless
you'll be using more than one microphone at a time, you don't need any
more than one preamp channel and that will save you some money.

Sound Forge

I have recently purchased Sound Forge 6 having used 4.0 for a couple
of years.
I edit a fair bit of mp3 downloaded from the net and find some tracks
particularly, from the 1970s have a hollow/echo sound to them.
As a real editing novice, can someone please tell me if it is possible
to eliminate or at least reduce the echo, and if so, how do I do it
with Sound Forge.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

'Noise gating' is about all you can really do, but will probably end up
sounding 'choppy'.

Of course MP3 encoding can make things sound pretty hollow itself....

Sound Forge Region Replacement

Does anyone know the trick to replacing the audio in a Sound Forge
region with a new larger audio chunk, and having the region boundry
expand to the right (and push all other regions to the right along
with it)?

Oddly enough, the right regins boundry moves to the left when
replacing the audio with a smaller chunk.

Any ideas?

I would think plain old copy and paste would do it. At least it will do the
actual replacing and moving the rest of the file down but you'll probably
have to update the region markers by hand. Another way to do it that would
handle the region markers for you is simply drag the audio to a blank spot
on the workspace and create a new file. Drag the head first then highlight
and drag the long region to the end (of the newly created window), then the
tail. Then save the new file with whatever name you want or close the old
file and save the new file under that name thereby overwriting the old file.

Apogee, Lucid, Lynx for DAW???

My setup consists of a Mackie 1202-VLZ running into an Echo Mia audio
card back out into HR824's. Everything runs into a P4 1.6 256DDR and
Cakewalk 9. In time I will be getting a Great River Pre and Neumann
TLM-103, but for right now I would like to upgrade my ADC.
First off, is the Echo Mia equal to the Layla sonically? The Apogee
Rosetta sounds like the one to have, but after much research I still
have no idea what would be a good product to get the signal into the
PC. I see several people have used the SPDIF input from various audio
cards for this. Is there any sacrifices or limitations using this
approach? If not then are all SPDIF inputs create equal? Is there a
better solution?

While on the subject, what about Apogee vs. Lucid vs. Lynx?

If I don't figure these things out I will just buy a Layla and
always wonder what I am missing :-/

Thanks in advance for any replies,
-Higgs

All of those are good converter choices. Check for features other
than the converters, such as interface and/or midi or SMPTE etc..

ANY of the others would be a better choice.

Music Creation Software

What software do I need to simply burn instrumentals into a program and lay my original vocals over the top of them for demo purposes only?

Yes there are other multitrack recording programs you
can buy - I suggest you download their demos to find
out which one best suits your needs.

You can get Cakewalk's Guitar Tracks 2 from the
<a href="http://www.cakewalk.com/download/download.asp?Action=DL&PID=60" target="cake">Cakewalk site</a>.

Acid Music 3.0 is made for working with loop libraries
rather than recording - you can find out more <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/AcidMusicDemo/" target="amus">here</a>.

I would suggest you also look at n-Tracks as this is
an excellent multitrack recording program to started with. You can also <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/n-Track_studio/" target ="ntrack">download the demo or buy n-Track
Studio here</a>.

Re: Music Creation Software

It's a bit difficult to understand your question, for
example do you already have the instrumental recordings?

If so then all you need is a Multitrack recording
program. This type of software will let you record the
stereo instrumental music onto two tracks which you can
listen to as you record your vocals on a third track,
you can do much more than this - but this will get you
started.

If you're using Windows then a good free program to
start with is <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/DDClip_Free/">DDClip Free</a>

Or you can look through the list of other programs on

Recording Audio in Cubase SX

I've imported a Reason Tune into Cubase SX by exporting it as a wave file and importing it onto the first audio track on Cubase SX.

On Audio Track 2 I am trying to record vocals. I can hear the mic and record okay but it picks up Audio Track 1 on the recording so when it is played back you get a double effect as well as the mic recording.

How do I record the mic as a separate source without picking up track 1?

Re: Recording Audio in Cubase SX

Don't know what sound card you're using but I had a similar problem with an Audigy 2 card recently.

I was recording the "what you hear" output of the card whereas I needed to be recording the input itself instead.

By going into the mixer settings of the card itself, there is a record setting that was set to "what you hear" and I changed it to Mic/Line in and voila!, you're just recording just the input and not the output mixed with the input if you get me.

Beefing up drums on fruity

Does anyone here use fruity loops? I find a lot of the kick drum samples a bit dull, the only way i've found of making them "beefier" is to clone the drum channels, or go to channel settings and increase the amplitude...neither really produce any satisfactory results, and the latter tends to distort. Any tips?

Re: Beefing up drums on fruity

There's an amazing tutorial about the subject at Samplecity.com. Check it out.

: Does anyone here use fruity loops? I find a lot of the kick drum samples a bit dull, the only way i've found of making them "beefier" is to clone the drum channels, or go to channel settings and increase the amplitude...neither really produce any satisfactory results, and the latter tends to distort. Any tips?

Can you provide a little more information about what a
"ins" file is, like what software it works with and
what you use it for - then someone here might be able
to help.

Jason.

Losing high frequencies

Hi all,

So I am trying to record my record collection to mp3 format and I am
encountering a small problem: all of my recordings have significant
high frequency loss. It's puzzling; I have tried several different
sound recording programs (lots of shareware and even the reputable
Musicmatch), I have tried to increase sound quality by jacking the
kbps to the max (up to 320 for an mp3) or increasing the frequency to
48000 Hz or using 16-bit sampling over 8-bit, and I have even played
around with the recording settings for my sound card (under control
panel, audio/multimedia, there is a way to alter the sound recording
settings by changing the hardware acceleration and sound rate
conversion levels; I put them each to their highest levels bit it
doesnt help). Now when I listen to the output of my record playing
through my computer it sounds fine, even though it is coming in
through a microphone port and my soundcard is a generic PCI card that
came with my motherboard. However, the recorded version is always of
a much lower quality... Any ideas of how to correct this? Is it a
limitation of my sound card? I have spent the last several hours
trying to come up with some solution to no avail.

Thanks a lot,
Adam
