Sound-Program

I have a question: I've got a soundcard with a midi-out and a speaker-out. Does it exist a program, that can make, that i can hear one sound through the midi and an ohter sound through the speaker?

Re: Sound-Program

Hey Simon -

You mean by 'midi out' a multi pin midi port? OK well this port transferes midi data NOT audio or 'sound'. The only thing to 'read' this midi data (and then convert the info to sound) is say a midi keyboard or a midi sound module - or another sound card! So I'm not sure what u mean exactly by listening - to WHAT at the same time? Maybe question answered?!

music synthesizers

I have no instruments, don't know how to use any but I write songs and sing in the shower. Where can I get a free synthesizer software to record my meddlings?

Great subject title - specifies question - others please note!

Hey Calvo!

It's the best way to get into music based recording - using FREEWARE!!! Have a look round the 'MIDI/Audio sequencers' section of www.sonicspot.com where u will find all the 'Freeware' programs clearly marked as such. 'Massiva' looks a good one - u should be able to play along to midi drums which u will program in an 'edit grid' - very easy. Or u can play along to drum pattern samples which you can download from net and arrange in groups.

It will not be 'easy' to learn to record with your computer as u will need to spend a bit of time learning any program u use. Read the manual right through before trying to record OK?

LP to MP3 conversion

I have a problem with the horrible amount of work required to convert LP's and R 2 R tapes to MP3. One has to first convert the entire LP or tape to a dot wav. Then one has to edit out the start, inter selection and ending segues. Then clean up the noise. Then split apart the selections to individual dot wav files. Then convert each dot wav to MP3, and finally, at long suffering last, purge the gigs of dot wav clutter. UGH!!! Hasn't anyone come up with a less labor intensive way of doing this?

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Re: LP to MP3 conversion

I use MusicMatch to record analog vinyl and tapes. Any MP3 recorder that allows a line in will allow you to do this. GL.

firewire harddrives for audio?

I have a g4, I use a cd-burner that is fire wire. Can I store my audio on a fire wire hard drive, or is SCSI a better alternative?

UltraWide...

UltraWide SCSI is very fast although firewire is as fast as far as I can acertain although, with one problem. Current firewire drives are basically firewire controllers controlling an IDE drive. We are still waiting for the advent of Fully firewire drives although the've been some time in coming. Shame all that interface speed is somewhat wasted. The good thing about Firewire drives is that they 'are' usually very fast and 'HotPluggable' which is a bonus and your G4 can has 3 firewire ports that may at present be going to waste. Also, you wont have to bog down your 'puter with PCI cards and SCSI unreliability.

help with soundcard

I have a big problem with my soundcard on my hewlett packard pavillion 8533z. The soundcard is a riptide soundcard. On my older computer i have a soundblaster 32 wave card and when i transfer my music from the old computer to the hp pavillion the sound doesn't convert to wave sound.....but when you play mp3 or any other music such as a cd....internet music it gives me back real audio. When i connect my keyboard to it through the midi....it gives me this tin artificial sound. How can i change the setting.......or change the sound card?????????

Re: help with soundcard - try emulation

Your problem is not clear - is it with midi files only? If so try installing an 'emulated' soundcard like Yamaha's SY-XG50/100. It supplies top quality midi sounds which may be lacking on your present card.

sound conversion

Midi to mp3 conversion

I'm looking for a free or shareware program that converts midi to mp3 format.
Thanks
Rich

I need a Sound Card....

What is the most powerfull sound card for Mixing and Editing.......
And where can i find it?

Re: I need a Sound Card....

That depends on who you ask and what type of 'music production' you envisage and which style of music you want to create and what inputs/outputs you need etc. You do know that you need a sequencer for mixing and editing not just a soundcard???

Have a look at Yamaha SW1000XG for top midi sounds and Creamware Pulsar and Terra Tec EWS88MT - there are a lot to choose from.

problem turning Cakewalk 8 mix into wave file

Does anyone know how to properly export a cakewalk 8 mix to a wave file?
When i've tried to export to wave, i've only had problems. Not sure if i'm doing it right.
When listening to resulting wave, it seems out of proportion, the tracks don't mix the same as i have them in Cakewalk. Some get really loud and others nearly silent.
Is there something i can do in cake walk to zero out the levels before exporting, so that the resulting wave file sounds like the original?
pat

Re: problem turning Cakewalk 8 mix into wave file

Have you tried the MIXDOWN option under the TOOLS menu?

Re: problem turning Cakewalk 8 mix into wave file

On this version, Cakewalk express 8.04, there is no mixdown option in the pulldown tools menu, peculularily enough.
In fact, there doesn't appear to be any built in option for readying the tracks for a mixdown.
This is something i wasn't aware of when i got the program.
I think i'll just have to get some different software.
thanks for your suggestion, pat

?

How do I convert MP3’s to .AIFF files? I’m using the application Toast to burn but the music won’t play?

MIDI to WAV?

A boring problem, but at this rate i'll have to bring the dat recorder back out of the cupboard, and I thought that my Soundblaster Live! Drive Platinum and Cubasis VST was going to enable me to record my midi setup straight to .wav.
(That sentence has got to be an olympic record!)
Trouble is, the music is all chugging away nicely, and i'm ready to record, but when I start up the creative recorder, and set the correct inputs, I get a notice saying that mmsystem004 is in use. Eh? what? ok? help!
check us out at actuality.iuma.com
and thanks for your help.

Re: MIDI to WAV? - do it all in Cubasis

You don't want to bother with the creative recorder. Your soundcard looks like it will only 'open' for one program at a time which is why this 'device in use' message is occuring.

To midi>wav just select an audio track in Cubasis to record onto and with the right soundcard selections when u press record the midi will play and be recorded instantly onto the audio track as a .wav OK? Easy!

Usage of a second installed sound card

To anyone whom can answer my question,

I have a Compaq Presario loaded with a Maestro MPU-401 sound card on its "mother-board".
I would like to use my new "Soundblaster Platinum Live Drive". I have installed the hardware,
and both cards function when I set them up accordingly in the Cubase and Cakewalk programs. The
problem that I am having is that the Soundblaster output is MUCH lower than that of the Maestro card.
I have been told that I will have to go into the "BIOS". Can anyone instruct a decent muscician/idiot
mouse clicker.. how I should go about doing this??

Please address your welcome reply to souloday@netscape.net

Thanks beforehand,

Billy Day

HELP !!!!!!!!!!

On my other computer I have Rio Port AudioManager, but on new computer I only have windows media player I don't really care for it. I download a lot from Napster and have a burner. BUt nothing I burn is playable on the player, but is playable on other players.Which player should I download to be able to play my burned audio cds on my comp and cd players?

Mastering to CD

I've been working on some tracks in my studio and now need to mix them down to a cd. I've done some test mixes and compared them to commercial recordings. What I notice more than anything is the commercial levels are higher and much more punchier and fuller in sound.
What levels should I be using on the line out from my desk to get a high output without distortion. I'm also using a compressor/limiter across the output. Mixing through Alesis Studio 1's monitors.
Any advice on that would be great.

Hehe...

The fine art of mastering... ho hum.

Lots of people compare their music with commercial recordings when finalising their mix which is a good idea if you don't look too deeply into it. The compressor limiter is a good start on the output of the desk although it's not always capable of controlling the mix, it would depend greatly on how dynamic one of the instruments is compared to the next . An overly dynamic kick drum say, will keep the mix dipping out when the levels get high leading to the undesirable effect of ducking the other instruments out when it plays by reducing the overall level of the mix. Even a careful hand on a compressor wont fully solve the problem. I often bypass the compressor occasionally to make sure that I haven't strayed too far from the source output of the desk.

I good mix is a good mix before it goes into the compressor. The compressor will play havoc with over bassy frequencies and generally appear to affect the Eq of the mix. Try having everything as flat as it can be before compressing it. The compressor should be looked at as a way of bringing the mix back together and fitting it into a compatible and tight package.

You may find that careful eq'ing and dynamic positioning is the key to your success. Once you are really happy with the sound on the mix (pre-compression) then try a light compression and work up. DON'T always resort to putting the Attack on fastest as this will usually cut of the transients of the drums etc... which will dull the mix and make it sound bland. Watch the gain reduction (GR) at ALL times.

Hard to go any further without hearing it. What type of music is it? what sort of stuff are you comparing it with?

Music notation program

Can anyone out there give me factual and updated advice on the most practical music notation download available for writing popular sheet music - i.e. piano parts, choir but mainly top line and chord symbols. Sibelius sounds expensive. I have been using Noteworthy. With thanks, Sidney Rosenberg
