Re: i want vocal samples

What exactly are you looking for? When do you need them? male? Female?

Re: i want vocal samples

I'd like female or male really. I'm either happy to play with existing vocal tracks and cut them up and whack effects on them. Or I'd really like aggressive, subversive messages.

See my site: Finnigan

???Sampling???

Hello, which music software would be most appropriate for my needs? I wish to:
- sample from mini disc & compact disc
- loop & edit samples
- play (indefinite) multiple samples simultaneously
- add a large variety of efx
- sync audio to video: avi and quicktime
- save as mp3 and wav
I am interested in making loop based music for game development...and searching for the Akai MPC-2000 equivalent on the pc platform. Your knowledge is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Recording from Yamaha keyboard to computer

I have Musictime Deluxe v3.0 and am trying unsuccessfully to record from my Yamaha psr-520 keyboard . I am using a midi breakout cable to an Ensoniq soundcard, DIN OUT to soundcard games/midi port. I assume that if my soundcard plays midi files and the games port is ENABLED I should be able to record notes played. Unfortunately all I record is rests! I have checked Windows multimedia and sound card settings and both select MPU-401 for recording. Can someone help or suggest where else I might enquire? John

Music software

Hi,
I want to buy my nephew a music software package
but am unsure what to get him. can anyone tell me
whats better between Cubasis, Cakewalk, Magix
PlayRDeluxe etc.. He is just starting out if that
helps plus I cant afford much more than $100US.
Can anyone help me?

Re: Music software

Most of them are NOTATION packages. I have never liked them, so I wrote my own DOS-based MIDI music program where basically your ideas become music almost instantly.

See the link attached to this posting. Email me directly if your interested.

mp3 from the T.V

what program should i use, so i can
record/convert a song from the tv or the vhs to
a mp3 file or any other audio file on the PC?

Re: mp3 from the T.V

Hey jesse,

'CDex' is a great freeware mp3 converter/CDRipper. An 'audio editor' will record in .wav (which is converted to mp3) for u - I think the freeware 'Sampled' will do it. Have a look round the software section of this site for more examples.

real audio streams saved as mp3

is there an application that allows me to save streaming audio to an mp3 or even a wav?

thanks

Re: real audio streams saved as mp3

Try Total Recorder. It will capture to WAV.

Cheers

tape to computer

I have a language learning audio tape that has inadequate
silence spaces between phrases. I'd like to get the tape
into digital format on my computer, then edit the result
to give me time between the spoken phrases. I'd also like
to copy phrases for repeating purposes.
I think using a microphone as input will lose the quality
I need on this very difficult language.
How do I go about it, and what freeware/shareware is
available that will do what I want?
Any advice and ideas would be great.

use an audio editor to learn a new language!

Nice idea Tim,

well all you need really is an 'audio editor' for this job. Plug a jack from your tape players headphone/line out socket into the mic/line in socket of your soundcard. Make sure your card record levels are not muted etc and simply press record in the audio editor. Once recorded spaces are easily placed between phrases by 'copying' a piece of silence and 'pasting' it where needed. Cool Edit is an example of an 'audio editor' - see more in the software/freeware section of this site (link near top of message board)

Cubasis VST instruments delay

I seem to be getting trouble with the VST instruments supplied with the software (e.g. the drum machine), they are far too delayed in terms of response when i press a key even though I own a SoundBlaster Live! card, which i thought would be able to cope easily, i'm using an SY85 as my keyboard.. something set up wrong there perhaps, or can i tweak cubase? My PC is a Pentium 3 550Mhz with 128 RAM + Geforce 256 pro.

Re: Cubasis VST instruments delay

: I seem to be getting trouble with the VST instruments supplied with the software ...they are far too delayed in terms of response when i press a key even though I own a SoundBlaster Live! card, which i thought would be able to cope easily...

Well this is the million dollar question! I wish creative would make it clear that Soundblaster users are not gonna get the kind of setup they want (esp. for Cubase) no matter how powerful their PC system is (and yours is more than good enough).
It's all to do with the fact that the ASIO drivers for the soundblaster are pretty crap, and that's why you have such high latency (i.e. big delay) when you try to play your VSTi's. If you invest in a soundcard that has a good set of Asio drivers written for it, then you will be amazed at the performance of your setup.
However, do some searching for Soundblaster info on the web, and you will be able to find out how some people are using the drivers from the E-MU APS soundcard to get the soundblaster doing a better job (Not approved by Creative tho' !!)

Good luck! (and check out the Stenberg website for a list of cards that have ASIO drivers written for them)

teething problems : cubase + desk

hello there

despite playing bass for about 12 years now (as well as some very amateur guitar + drums), i´m just starting out on this computer/recording business. I have a good pc (P3 600mhz, 10+10gig hd...) which an informed friend kindly helped me put together, a soundblaster live value, and cubase 3.65.

been putting together some very basic ideas and am looking to find out how to make listening to them more bearable.

I am soon to take delivery of a Behringer MX802A mixing desk and am wondering how do I connect it to the sound card to multitrack record?

also if some kind soul could shift me a copy of the cubase 3.65 manual, (complete) they would have my eternal gratitude....

The whole point of what i´m trying to do with this cubase business is to eventually get it rocket powered and jam with fellow musicians out there...

right before this becomes a dissertation, i´ll sign off and be back soon to eagerly await your answers...

cheers, mark

Cool Edit 2000 Plugin

Someone responded to my post that Cool Edit 2000 has a plugin that will allow it to decode MP3's to wvae files. Can anyone tell which plugin will do this?

Thank you,

Re: Cool Edit 2000 Plugin

Hi

As far as I know, Cool Edit 2000 has the MP3 functionality built in. You don't need a plug-in. But Cool Edit Pro has an MP3 plug-in available.

If you're looking for an MP3 decoder, there is a specialised category at MP3Machine.com.

Cheers
Geoff

Want to start remixing om my Mac

What software should i start with?

Thank you

Dara

Re: Want to start remixing om my Mac

I'm a Windows user myself, but I can point you to the remixing software.

I'd recommend Cakewalk Metro, Phrazer (recommended) and BayTex.

Re: Want to start remixing om my Mac

I think I would start with installing Windows.
Mac is losing the battle because it invests
more money in making their boxes look good
in a video-clip on TV than in making a product
that offers a realistic value for money ratio.

My two cents

Any more...

...childish comments from you and I wont come back to this forum other than to check whether you have left or not.

Steve...R

Steve baby u started the agro not me and -

u may actually help people out here so why not just ignore me if u can't handle my 'childishness' - God I hope you don't have children - or if u do, you treat them with a bit more tolerance than you do people online.

steve

you know the fancy boxes may not be the only problem - there's t

Nothing personal Dara only one gave me a bit of grief there!

OK have u had a look at Mixman Studio Mac? It's apparently a nice little package originally designed for PC. There isn't an awful lot unfortunately for your platform (especially for the starter) but u could use Cakewalk Metro to load up loops to then mess them about with an audio editor like Spark or Recycle - quite expensive those though. Protools is a free download u could look too. Have a look round the software section of this site - link @ top of main page

How to contact SoundLib?

I've been using a demo of SoundLib v1.01 and would
like to pay the author for the updated non-demo version
but the link to his website is no good (www.webcom.com/playloud/SoundLib). The author is
Christophe Le Brasseur. I'll try to find his via a
little detective work on the internet BUT if anybody has any specific information please email me at kcooter@yahoo.com. Thanks.---Kevin.

I downloaded this software so that I would be able to make a working backup of some games I purchased. I ran the software and at the end of the copy process a message popped up stating that the copy had been successful. My target CD was blank. I had a co-worker try it out on his system with the same results. What gives? Did I download a bad copy?

Help with digital equalizer

I would like to ask a question about digital equalizer software / hardware. Let me preface by saying that I know near nothing about storing and modifying music on computers.

What I would like to know is it possible to take a digital out signal S/PDIF from my CD player and feed it to a computer (do sound cards have a S/PDIF input)? Next I would like to adjust the equalizer to suit my needs and feed the digital signal back to my CD player S/PDIF input. Is it possible to do this? I would like to do this in the digital domain. What software and hardware is needed? From a audiophile standpoint, what results can I expect? Will I loose resolution?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Dan

svq file converter.

Is there a way to convert samples to svq format to play on those roland k/boards.

armchair musician needs help getting started!!!

OK here goes:
I am about to buy the big MAC G-4 w/ 512M & an extra internal 20GB drive to devote to music editing. ( I am a photographer & use MAC primarily for Photoshop work) I want to make loop based music a la Chemical Bros, Tricky, Leftfield, Underworld, Portishead, etc. I have been collecting weird vinyl FOR YEARS.(I have about 50 diff MOOG records from the 70's just to give you an idea) I have a good sense of how things work yet I HAVE NO SOFTWARE...Why? Its a bit overwhelming knowing where to start. So here is my basic wish list & perhaps you can tell me what software & hardware to start with.
I want to:
- record samples from vinyl (& any source) to computer
- edit (manipulate, clean up, enhance) & store samples
- edit them into loop-based multi-track song program
- perhaps add a digital synth/sound effects program

I WANT TO MAKE MUSIC EVEN IF ONLY TO ANNOY MY FRIENDS & FAMILY. WON'T YOU HELP?

Sincerley,

Digitally Disadvantaged David

the rundown...

It all depends on your budget man.you could download pro tools free and cop some whaky sampler free ware.If youve got some cash and want a descent MIDI set up be prepared to spend $900 or more.
For a midi setup Steve R's advice was great. and logic audio offers 3 different versions. If you get the gold version its a little over $300(theres also silver and platinum).the Good thing about owning a mac is that you can also check out motu's digital performer.Besides a pro tools tdm based system($$$) its probably the best multitrack/sequencer available.
Now if you want I/o interface that gives you options such as 8/8 analog and 8+/8+ digital channels the price gets a wee bit steep.for, using these interfaces will cost you between $500 & $1000.And then of course you need monitors......at least $200, and Head phones(get good headphones!).software synth$ 250 plug ins.... mics...pre amps ....etc.
and if you want to get unique sounds youre gonna want to leave the midi realm occasionally and mic some sounds(even if its just your turntable through a distorted guitar amp).A secret:to add texture misuse your synth or turntables by addinbg guitar stomp efx and mic it. If you want to relly get avant garde you may want to re record parts of a loop running it throgh a nasty guitar amp then mix it with the original.
Perhaps overdub a live rythm section? For these reasons I got the digi 001.its a pro tools package that will give you pro tools le with24 tracks/sequencer,and theyre oo1 interface wich gives me 8 analog I/O w. 2 buit in mic preamps, a midi I/o,8/8 digital i/o and in spdif i/o(for an adat).I got all this crap for only $800.
Now with this non-tdm pro tools system you wont get the same midi features as in dp,cubase,or logic. But this hardware is compatible with logic audio if you need more.
but if you get the oo1 you must check out alkali.alkali will automatically fit any loop to any tempo and then augment the individual components of it without compromising its content. And check out the koblo studio 9000.
this package wiil give you 2 synths and a drum
machine/sequencer. perhaps the latest propellerhead synth reason is better, i havent tried it yet.
For the best set up in town id get motu's 2048
interface and theyre digital performer software.
