the rundown...

It all depends on your budget man.you could download pro tools free and cop some whaky sampler free ware.If youve got some cash and want a descent MIDI set up be prepared to spend $900 or more.
For a midi setup Steve R's advice was great. and logic audio offers 3 different versions. If you get the gold version its a little over $300(theres also silver and platinum).the Good thing about owning a mac is that you can also check out motu's digital performer.Besides a pro tools tdm based system($$$) its probably the best multitrack/sequencer available.
Now if you want I/o interface that gives you options such as 8/8 analog and 8+/8+ digital channels the price gets a wee bit steep.for, using these interfaces will cost you between $500 & $1000.And then of course you need monitors......at least $200, and Head phones(get good headphones!).software synth$ 250 plug ins.... mics...pre amps ....etc.
and if you want to get unique sounds youre gonna want to leave the midi realm occasionally and mic some sounds(even if its just your turntable through a distorted guitar amp).A secret:to add texture misuse your synth or turntables by addinbg guitar stomp efx and mic it. If you want to relly get avant garde you may want to re record parts of a loop running it throgh a nasty guitar amp then mix it with the original.
Perhaps overdub a live rythm section? For these reasons I got the digi 001.its a pro tools package that will give you pro tools le with24 tracks/sequencer,and theyre oo1 interface wich gives me 8 analog I/O w. 2 buit in mic preamps, a midi I/o,8/8 digital i/o and in spdif i/o(for an adat).I got all this crap for only $800.
Now with this non-tdm pro tools system you wont get the same midi features as in dp,cubase,or logic. But this hardware is compatible with logic audio if you need more.
but if you get the oo1 you must check out alkali.alkali will automatically fit any loop to any tempo and then augment the individual components of it without compromising its content. And check out the koblo studio 9000.
this package wiil give you 2 synths and a drum
machine/sequencer. perhaps the latest propellerhead synth reason is better, i havent tried it yet.
For the best set up in town id get motu's 2048
interface and theyre digital performer software.

Making Music.

: I want to:
: - record samples from vinyl (& any source) to computer
: - edit (manipulate, clean up, enhance) & store samples
: - edit them into loop-based multi-track song program
: - perhaps add a digital synth/sound effects program

You could do all those things with a copy of Logic Audio or Cubase (being the main choices in my mind). I used Logic on a G4 which allows me to record from the audio input directly to the Hard Drive. I can then edit them (although not as good as a seperate editing program like peak or spark), add effects, eq. You G4 will more than likely exceed 40 mono tracks easily and you may squeeze in some eq's and Fx.

I could take sections of the audio and do many weird things from pitch changing to time stretching, reversing. You can then just drag the samples onto the main arrange window where ever you like. The scope is massive and basically does almost everything you could want.

As far as I know, there isn't a Logic Audio demo although you can find some free cut down versions of Logic on the front of some computer music magazines that would get you started. There is however a Cubase demo on this website that you could download and try. It is also compatible with the G4 velocity engine which makes it very quick. Go take a look in the download area under "Multitrackers"

Regarding synths and drum machines, I would have a look at a new Program called "Reason". It has an amazing array of synth and sampler emulators, effects and mixers with an Amazing 19" rack simulation. You can turn the rack around and replug everything. I have tried the demo and was suprised by it's competency. It has a loop machine in at as well. I ran one of the demo songs that has tons of Samplers synths etc... and the preformance bar showed the Mac was running at a quarter of it's capacity. hehe...There are also tons of other synths that are either stand alone or VST compatible pluggins which need another host program to run them (i.e. Cubase or Logic). Using a technology called re-wire. You can sync the tempo of programs like Reason with Logic and have it's own inputs on the mixer that can then be recorded or used to insert effects. The two programs would be stunning but will cost you a tidy sum. Try the demos of both of the programs. You'll have to search yourself though as I am quite tired now, it's late.

I have only mentioned 3 programs here and 2 of them do basically the same job. There are many others that people swear by and many other Synth pluggins, (some free!). The best thing is to choose you system and learn to use it, then use it. Have a look around at first but when you have found the software that suits you, then stick with until you know it inside out. You can then start to create properly.

Enjoy!

keep babies away from computers - damage limitation!

I don't have one Francesc but I do know how destructive babies can be! Maybe it is not such a good idea to let yours near your computer?!

If you are very brave you should have a look round the 'educational' section of www.sonicspot.com where you will find a couple of programs which may help. 'Mr. Drumstix Music Studio' looks particularly good while I will personally be checking out 'Happy Note! Notes in Space'!!

morally obtuse directives ..........

Well if you want to really turn some tunes out on the ultra cheap tip download pro tools free.
Also try out cakewalk studio or emagics digital editor silver. If you want to be a dastardly sneak
go to asta lavista.com and explore searchwords such as cubase vst 32,sonic foundry acid 2.0, fruity loops, or propellor heads rebirth and reason programs.but if you find and download these illegally you have to spend an xtra lifetime in purgatory.

All the help u can give please

Have trouble setting up and running Cubase please e-mail me back as quickly as possible

thanks

very vague - ASIO/MME?

You may be having audio driver trouble? You may need to open Cubase's ASIO/MME setup options from the start>programs menue BEFORE opening Cubase. In these setup pages you should ensure your soundcard is selected for DirectX only. If not compatable the go the MME way otherwise set inactive everything in MME. Then lauch Cubase -with your fingers crossed!

Need a program

Is there a program that you can play a insterment through your computer and have it print out as sheet music? I am new at this and don't want to download a bunch of stuff to find out it is the wrong thing, and I don't read music. THANKS

Notation

Yes Jim, 'Notation' software will allow u to do this as will many 'midi/audio sequencers' which are not only designed for Classical music like the former.

Look round www.sonicspot.com for an excellent data base of audio apps with reviews and screenshots.

Transposing Music

Where can I find a computer software program that will transpose music from one key to another? My wife spends hours doing this by hand and there must be a program that will do this for her. Please Help!

audio or midi?

If u put a complete song in .wav format into an 'audio editor' like Cool Edit u can transpose/pitch bend the song into another key.

If u mean midi file transposition then u can load the file into a midi sequencer and simply change the pitch of whole song/each track individually often from the fader/mixing screen - this takes seconds.

steve

Re: audio or midi?

Steve, Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I don't understand the terminology. This would be a visual thing that could then be printed after the key has been changed. I hope this makes sense. I'm sure you can help if we can understand each other. Thanks FliesJ

Score?

OK I think I get you! When u said 'by hand' I thought u meant going through a computer program inputing data but you actually mean - 'by hand'!! Well welcome to the 21st Century there is no need for that sort of buisness anymore!

What your poor wife needs is a piece of 'Notation' software. Sibelius is the best example available but quite expensive. Have a look round the 'Notation' section of www.sonicspot.com where u will fine 10 or so examples with screen shots and feature lists. Some apps will accept scanned images of Score while key transposition should be basic fare.

Hope that helps

live sampling using computer

I was wondering if there was a program that will let
you play 'wav' samples when triggered by a midi-keyboard.
For example, like mixman only instead of pressing the
keyboard and triggering sounds, you play a note on a
midi-keyboard. I'm sure it can be done, i just wouldn't
know how, any help is welcome, cheers,
Hysterix

software sampler will do it no probs

Yes there are quite a few apps u could do this with, this looks a good one -

'VirtuualSampler provides virtual MIDI-ports through the included MIDI driver and thus can be played live via MIDI keyboard or driven by any MIDI sequencer'

click software link near top of message board to find 'software sampler' section!

Burning problem

I can burn a CD successfully for computer playing, but it won't play on a stereo CD player. I've done the trial and error method of changing all types of settings, but I'm going through too many CDs. My stereo CD player is fine. I was told that I might not have the right CD burner software. How can I get the right software without continuing this trial and error waste?

Re: Burning problem

Buy youself a rewitable CD if you have a compat'
burner.
I use WINON CD- Registered copy without any
problems and burn with a traxdata. I do hear
that older type CD players don't like copies
but mine work fine in the car (2 different cars)
and two stereo's at home

streambox ripper

I Need the free full version of the stream box ripper. where can i find it?

dl-ing mp3's created on pc on a mac - technical weirdness???

i used musicmatch on a pc to rip some cd tracks of our students to mp3s and posted them on our site. they dl and play just fine on pc's. however, on macs, when you go to dl the mp3s, they're in the form of an html file and you get encrypted text. you have to stop the dl, do a 'save as' from the browser menu, change the ext. to mp3 and select source or binary, and save. what a hassle! and why does this happen? a friend also used musicmatch on a pc to make mp3s from a lecture and i posted those on another site. they play fine on pcs. on macs, they'll stream but you can't save the files.

anyone know what we're doing wrong? i used the same, simple html to post on both sites and musicmatch was used to make all the mp3s (tho my friend used a later ver. of musicmatch than i did, prob.). the files i made are fine and can be saved but you have to go thru all this hassle to save them. i'd like to make it easy for people to dl the files. a newbie would balk if they saw all that code streaming at them.

any help is appreciated.

thanks,
may

I have...

...seen some websites with instructions to click-hold and then 'save as' if you use a Mac but it is now so rare, I can't remember the last time. I think the problem may be in the age of your browser compared to the PC or, the HTML code on the website.

Rather than wade through HTML waters that I don't readily understand, can I direct you to a Macintosh Forum that has many knowledgable Mac users that respond quickly.

Need Sound/Music SW Developer/Programmer

Dear Programmer:

Our company is looking for a software developer who can create a sound generation program for our Neurosync software.

Can you tell me what development software tools are available.

Our program will consist of sound generation capabilities via a user friendly GUI. These tones will be at Brainwave frequencies from 2 to 40 cps/hz and this program will be used while the SW user plays their favorite music.

Several software programs like Cool Edit 2000 and Cool Edit Pro and Brainwave Generator already exist and the program we wish to develop will work along these lines.

We are a very small company and we are looking for a college student to program our software additions. Please pass this on to any person who knows about sound/music software development and programming who might be interested.

Boss DR770 Drum Machine

Can anyone please help?? - I am looking for a software programme similar to Hammerhead that I can use to control the drum and percussion sounds on the DR770 via Midi.

I would like to be able to select the various pads and sounds straight from the programme (using a 16 beat pattern like Hammerheads). Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Many thanks

MusicTime delux

I have just upgraded my PC to an 800 Mz Pentium III running under Windows Millenium Edition.
I now find that MusicTime DLX no longer runs.
When I try to run it I get a message saying that EPIJNL30.dev is corupted.
Any suggestions please - this program is quite old, do I need an upgrade?

Please help.

overwritten file?

Are u still on the same PC? If so a file may hav e been overwritten so a fresh install of the program is the solution. If on a new PC u are loading the program from a disk? If so the program has been damaged somewhere along the line and is probablly beyond hope! But try uninstalling then reinstalling the program as this may rectify a bad install. No matter how old it should work fine on ME unless there is something Microsoft are not telling us about!
