Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

I can deal with pop-ups, as long as they don't start to interfere with the reason for viewing a web page. Hit-squad is great...I'm a long-time professional musician, and I am wowed by the many links and deals. I also like the idea of a paper mailer, and perhaps a CD. The logistics may be a problem when it comes to mailing the CD's.
How about selling shares? I am also in favor of a membership offering the perks you mentioned. Given the choice, I would vote for a membership as long as the price is right. Thanks.

Hi John,

We've got all the membership information available here.

As for selling shares, it has always been my goal to
one day reach the level at which we can offer shares
to all the people who participate in Hitsquad, it
would be wonderful if musicians everywhere had the
opportunity to become real owners of Hitsquad.

Unfortunately the way the share markets have gone over
the last year for internet related businesses means
that you can no longer easily find the financial
support necessary from various financial/share trading
institutions to make a public offer viable.

The only way to do it now is the same way it used to
be before the dot com bubble burst - demonstrate that
you have a stable and steadily growing profitable
business over a number of years, then offer shares.

Thanks,
Jason.

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

In a word "NO"! Thanks.

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

: In a word "NO"! Thanks.

I agree with the sentiment, but what other suggestions
do you have for replacing the income we used to get
from banner advertising?

At the risk of sounding boring for repeating myself,
if we can't find a way to replace this lost income
then the is a real likelihood of being forced to
reduce the level of free services here.

Thanks,
Jason.

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

They are ok but I am not thrilled about "Pop-Up ads" on HITSQUAD.

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

: They are ok but I am not thrilled about "Pop-Up ads" on HITSQUAD.

Hi Kent,

Thanks for your feedback. I'm not particularly thrilled
about pop-ups either which is why we are offering non
pop-up access for members.

Unfortunately we can't offer this to non-members as we
have to replace the lost banner income to continue
to be able to afford to keep all the free services
online.

Thanks,
Jason.

Re: We're giving membership a go

Thanks for all the feedback this week! Apart from
the messages posted here I've also received emails
on the subject.

The whole team here has looked at everyone's ideas
and we've come up with a pretty exciting membership
package.

PS - Please let me know what you think

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO SURVIVE! I WOULD HATE TO SEE THIS THING DISSAPEAR.SORRY NOT A BUISNESS IDEAS MAN. YES YES YES . JUST DO IT. THE IDEA OF MEMBERSHIP FEES IS WORRYING AS IT IS YET ANOTHER DEMAND ON THE BANK BALANCE.ANOTHER MONTHLY OUTGO THAT COULD BE SPENT ON MUSIC OR BEER OR SPLIFFS. YOUR AVERAGE WANNABE MUSICMAN (ME)WOULD SOON DROP OUT WHEN THINGS GOT TIGHT.TO TAKE MONEY FROM MY A/C ON A REGULAR BASIS REQUIRES YOU SUPPLYING ME WITH LIFE SUPPORTING ESSENTIALS...POWER COMMS FOOD TRANSPORT....YOU MAY BE MY FAVE BUT YOU ARE NOT ESSENTIAL, SORRY BUT THATS REALITY.

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

Thanks Jack,

Don't worry we will make sure you still have the
option of free access to this site even if we go
ahead with memberships, and if you do become a
member it will be a low monthly price so you will
still have enough left over for your other interests :)

Jason.

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

I would have it either way. Pop-up ads aren't really a nuisance anyway, and I click on about 90% of the ads on this site because they tend to interest me. However, I also have a slow internet connection (like most of the world) and would gladly pay for the latest software and patches on CD, provided it wasn't overly too much (heh...the unemployed have a good reason for coming to this site, you know...)

But yeah, I would love to see a paper newsletter / CD, and (although this would probably be too much, and the idea is offered only IF the membership idea goes through and IF enough people become members) it would be REALLY cool if you could customize your favourite categories / things to do, IE you could have one CD of synths & drum sequencers and another of plugins and guitar accessories. Or, for that matter, you could have special monthly editions of the CD's featuring different categories...yeah...

Heh, but I don't work here, and I've said my fill already, so...yeah

Cool,

Andrew

PS There are other special things you could do for members too, some that cost basically nothing. Check out the forums at www.talkbass.com for an idea of what I mean (supporting members get recognition and a personal picture under their name...groovy)

Thanks Andrew,

We really like your suggestions so don't be surprised
if they all end up being included if we go ahead
with memberships.

Cheers,
Jason.

pop-ups

put more ads in instead.

wait...take the ads out, replace them with pop-ups that killad will kill & I'll never see ANY adverts! AWESOME...go for it!

pop-ups suck. who clicks on them anyways - I never have. that's why I use 'killad'.

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - no objections, is bett

I think that there will be more subscribers, who will stay a member, when the subscription will remain free and will take it for granted that there are pop-up banners, instead of no pop-up banner and they will have to pay a monthly fee

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - no objections, is bett

: Hello,

: I am the CEO here at Hitsquad - that's a pompous way
: of saying that I'm the musician who came up with the
: idea for this web site back in 1994.

: As you have probably already noticed, there have been
: an increasing number of Pop-Under ads on this site in
: recent times and there is a lot of pressure for
: Pop-Up ads to be included as well.

: Why?

: It's for the same reason that big web sites like
: Yahoo and Cnet have been running these ads lately
: too - because we no longer get enough income from
: banner ads to keep this site going. If we don't
: find a way to replace this lost income then this
: site will be gone, either that or sold to some big
: multinational company that might not care about
: music or musicians.

: There is one other possibility though - we've come
: up with the idea of a Hitsquad membership for a
: small monthly fee which would include such things as:

:
Special access to a NO Banner, NO Pop-Up, NO Pop-Under version of this site
:
A newsletter printed on old fashioned paper and posted to you once per month
:
A free CD-Rom included with the newsletter containing all the latest music software and some other goodies
:
Special member only discounts from music equipment retailers

: So what do you think?

: Let me know if you feel we should keep the banners
: and pop-unders or close the site down for everyone,
: or keep this free site here and offer the kind of
: special memberships described above.

: Or perhaps you have a better idea.

: I'm looking forward to seeing your replies...

: Jason Horton (Hitsquad member #1:)

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

Please, please - NO pop up ads. If you do put them in, you can cancel my subscription!

Re: Do You Want Pop-Up Ads on Hitsquad? - Vote Here

: Please, please - NO pop up ads. If you do put them in, you can cancel my subscription!

Hi Con,

I appreciate your feelings about this which is why
I've raised the issue here.

I think you may have missed the point however. If
the lost income from banners is not replaced then
you will not have service to get a free subscription
to at this site and many other sites.

The question still remains - what is the most acceptable
way to replace the lost banner income to keep this
service online?

Jason.

Re:

The prospect of free internet becoming a thing of the past should ring bells on all of us.
I strongly disagree with the paid membership issue, if it means that this site's content will be out of limits for non members. You don't need me to tell you how much help your site was for some of us. I must tell you though, that if the only thing you had in the download section was a crummy drum machine that played only one out of ten times you run it (& kept missing the tempo), there would be at least one person who would try it & maby write his music with it, so if you can, keep it AVAILABLE.
You should place more ads if you needed to. I don't worry about any pop-ups, or banners. There is always a good pop-up killer if you need one...

Hi Kozida,

You are so right about what could happen to the free
internet - we all need to work hard to keep it free
because that's when the net works best.

The memberships would only be optional and all the
free content here will stay free - especially that
dodgy drum machine, after all getting it right one
in ten times makes it better than some drummers I've
worked with :) (flame bait?)

One thing though, you missed the point about pop-ups
and pop-unders - if you use software to prevent them
then we're back at square one because we only get
paid when the ad is shown so the free net would still
be in doubt.

If we don't all work together to find a way to keep
the greater part of the net free then the only free
services left will be ones controlled by a small group
of very large and powerful companies that have the
scale to provide free services in exchange for massive
promotion for huge corporate sponsors (just think of TV).
Unfortunately the musician side of music doesn't have
many huge corporate sponsors.

Jason.

Re:

You're 100% right. When I mentioned ads I meant it would be allright for me to see 5 more ads (like guitarSite.com) on the right side of this site instead of a pop-up. What I don't need is those spyware adds that use cookie info that I don't have to give. You propably know that for example AtGuard doesn't necessarily block the appearance of ads but can restrict those gifs from looping.
The big issue:
If the promotion companies this site works with is willing to invade a user's privacy in any way, the user has the right to primarily protect himself, & secondarily choose to use a safe way to reach the site or forget about it.
Since I'm only here for the discussion part of the site (I hope I helped some of the people, by the way) -don't get this wrong, the other sections are really helpfull too- I can only hope that the best way of solving your site survival issue won't be against your own principals...

Re:

Jason

I take exception to that comment about drummers :)

Would the membership work though...

Jason,

Thanks first off for giving the vote to the people here. It's makes all the difference. Thanks also for the great site.. I direct everyone here for the file area alone.

The concern I have with the membership is the free CD may pose problems when dealing with members around over the world. I live in england and sending me the CD every period may be more of an expense than you would want. Also, the offer of discount at music retailers may be a problem if you are expected to balance that globally.

The reality of it is, if you honestly believe that the pop up windows are necessary these days for the site to survive, then I will happily live with them. As long as they're are not those ones that sneak themselves into the bottom right of the screen and wont go away until you have quit the browser, have you had those???

Again, thanks for throwing it at the forum. I vote for the pop ups...

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the quick response!

We've done our homework and we can afford to send
the Newsletter & CD-Rom to nearly all of the countries
where visitors to this site live.

We've also never had the type of pop-ups or pop-unders
that you have to kill your browser to get rid of,
same goes for ones that keep popping up when you
close the window.

Cheers,
Jason.

You know me...

I'm in and out of this forum from time to time and only presently have enough time to attend here regularly. Whether a subscription is practical for me, I don't know. I know that I am used to the pop up window and if this is the way that the internet is going in order to keep it free, then I am happy to live with it.

I wont go on as I don't wish to clogg up the thread. Keep us informed of the possibilities...

Also, I liked the webcam. Today it looked like someone had fallen asleep in front of the monitor.. was that you??? hehe

Regards

Recording wavs from cd, need HELP

Hi,

I'm trying to find a free program that will allow me to record a wav file from my cd rom. So far the only ones I've tried produce crappy wav files. I want to embed them in a web page, so I need quality. I really need some suggestions. Please email me at splucas22@earthlink.net. Thanks in advance.

FREE MULTITRACK EDITOR USED BY MAJOR LABEL RECORDING ARTISTS

ProTools is now FREE and can be received in the mail on a CD-ROM. How do I know? Because I got it myself. It runs on a Mac or a PC. I tried the PC version which worked just fine, which was a surprise since it was originally designed for the mac.

In case you didn't know, for many years ProTools was THE PROFESSIONAL STUDIO audio software. Many popular bands list a ProTools editing person in their credits along with the engineers and producers and additional musicians.

Many people spent a few thousand dollars for their ProTools systems before ProTools went public domain with their software. Sure, you can still buy a more complex ProTools that can edit videos and stuff, but for now, you are a fool if you don't get a copy.

Many recording studios bought ProTools just to maintain a steady stream of clients because it was so popular.

If you don't get a copy from Digidesign, you don't deserve to be making tracks.

The End

Re: FREE MULTITRACK EDITOR USED BY MAJOR LABEL RECORDING ARTISTS

The version thats free is limited to 8 tracks and other tings. Its not open source, aned for the real pro tools you have to pay. Their digi 001 costs $800 and a pro tools mix plus system maxed out with all the trimmings can put you back $30,000 though a pared down system is more like $15,000usd.

A good choice for the price concientious would be n-track studio by fa soft. Its cheap workswith asio and DX plug ins of wich many free ones are avalable and it doesnt have artificial limitations on its feature set. And it will work with your asio soundcard.

Thanks for the info...

Just to add to that, that the original (as is still the case) pro-tools is software that communicates with the Pro-Tools hardware, which is expensive. Pro-Tools free is a great program but has limited support for ASIO (I believe) and, although is a quality free program, is very much a taster of the full blown system..

Enjoy though
