How do I play midi with in sync with a band?

The question is thus. Say I have the new Karma, or just some good midi things. And I want to have the drummer play along with them. But I DON'T want the drummer listening on his headphones to the click. I've seen that and it is dumb. And it certainly ain't rock and roll.

Rather I would like the drummer to have his triggered drums (acoustic kit) control the beat. I'd like the box to "listen in" on the song and send me a midi time clock kinda thing. then this pulse could just keep the time even though I start and stop the song or midi song fragment.

Anybody know of what does this? Anything? Thanks for considering.

Re: How do I play midi with in sync with a band?

You will have to do some research on this in the the non-computer realm. There have been DJ devices and dance-oriented keyboards which claim to be able to do this. I know this from reading catalogs. One technique I have used is this: 1) get a rough idea of how fast the drummer is playing in BPM. 2) set my sequencer or drum machine to that BPM. 3) start the drum machine manually on the downbeat of every measure in sync with the drummer just by tapping my finger.

This only works with drum machines or samplers that have a start button that starts the music every time it's hit. Some kinds of machines will have a start button that also doubles as a stop button. It won't work with these.

If you have an Alesis HR-16 drum machine, you can use this to start and stop the beats in time with the drummer, and you can also send out MIDI clock this way.

Another technique is to get Finale (mac). This is a long shot, but it works too. There is a mode in finale for tapping the beat while playing in notes. Basically, it allows you to use your own tapping footswitch or keyboard key to set the BPM WHILE your enter in chords with one hand. If you know someone with Finale, ask to borrow the manuals to look up this function. Ask them if they have heard about it. I know of it because of a class I once took using MIDI.

For your setup, this could work because you could be tapping the beat while your friend plays drums and the computer stores the bpm. At the same time, you could use some other computer or hard disk recorder to record the drummer. OK. now you have stored the drummer's performance, and the BPM map. Now you can save the finale file and use finale to add the other MIDI notes and events to that BPM map.

Technically, you could even use a totally different piece of gear or software and save your composition as a standard midi file, then import that file back into finale for the BPM setting.

This is all theorhetical.

My favorite technique is just to record the drummer and to then overdub the electro parts manually

I tried to download the internet but it said to press any key to continue. Which one is the "any key?"

I tried pressing the eject button on my computer but that just ejected a cool little drink holder.

Soundfonts in Windows 2000

Does anyone know of a program that will allow SoundFont downloads in Windows 2000 to a SoundBlaster 64 card? All SoundBlaster original utilities are incompatible with Win 2K and they don't offer any updates!

can i plug two insturments...?

is there anya way that i could plug two diferent sources on my computer (guitar and mic) and record each one in diferent channel?

Re:

Yes, If your soundcard support it. If your Line In plug is a mini stereo one, you need a cable with 2 female plugs (for the mike & guitar). Most Sequencer programs, editors (like wavelab), even the windows mixer can control seperately the 2 channels (volume & panning)...

autotune hows it work

Hi muzo,s
Ive chopped my vocals up and want to create some pitch shifting
for dance music
p.s. my vocoders are pain .Can u help
tanks alot

Pitch shifting...

Auto tune as in Antares Autotune??? Although this is a pitch shifter, it's not your standard harmoniser. Standard harmonizers are two a penny as effects plugins. Auto tune is more relevant to analysing a pitch and then trying to hold that pitch at the note it thinks it should be held at, if you see what I mean. It's a complicated procedure and therefore the users is consequently expected to provide the key that the track is considered to be in, for it to work (Min/Maj etc...).

Antares is good for 'that' effect that we hear a lot on various tracks like Believe by Cher... Otherwise, go and have a poot around for a standard harmoniser and see what you get out of that.

I would use a series of Eq's. I use Logic audio on a Mac G4 and generally use the track Fx inserts or the inline Eq section. There are more than likely many other programs but Logic does it for me..

Where can I find Logic Audio? It's not on this site... Dave

It's expensive for the big boys one...

I think Logic Audio Platinum is about £500. There are versions for less.

Also, I am not trying to tell you this IS the software you will want to use. You need something that will allow you to run your file through a series of Eq's. Most Audio editors and DAW's will offer Eq facilities and some are quite cheap. My experience is with programs like Cubase or Logic and their Eq sections do it for me.

Check through the file area and also get some tips from other people. I use a Mac and can't recommend software for Windows.

Good luck!

Maya Audiotrack soundcard

I'm considering buying the Maya soundcard, it's got a lot of features at a really low price.Anyone have this card or heard anything about it?

: I'm considering buying the Maya soundcard, it's got a lot of features at a really low price.Anyone have this card or heard anything about it?

Yeah I know that Steve. I was hoping someone had real life experience with this hardware, that's the true test. One thing I like about this card, it has a built in mic preamp, which is a very good thang to have. The Maya card claims to have Asio implentation and be compatible with Gigasampler and Cubase BUT you never know until you try it. So go buy one and tell me how it works. And another thing ,how well will this card support analog to digital conversion. Fuck, man I don't want to be a computer geek but but but that's the bad side of pc recording, got to go through hell to reach heaven. I went into McDonalds the other day and said " I'd like an order of fries and the girl behind the counter said " would you like fries with that"?

Hehe...

It's the first time i've heard of that card.. but it sounds like it's made for the job. Like i've said, it's in the driver software more than the hardware in some ways. If the Hardware spec is up to date then be concerned about the software driver, that's all.... You would need someone that has used the card extensively to answer that. You MAY find someone here but put the feelers out...

Good luck dude

Re: Hehe...

I bought one of these used. So far it's worked really well for me using Sonar. Other people in the sonar message board seemed to have pretty mixed results. Anyway, not much more to say other then it's working well for me. You might keep an eye on Ebay as I've seen a few go for around $50, which is a steal.

Just read a review...

And it sounds quite a good one. My main concern with audio cards is that they have a good latency figure.. They claim 3ms which I doubt you will experience from synth to monitoring although it's probably low enough in real terms to be completely usable.

Check the reviews and cover all bases before you buy. Check with people on the driver software as sometimes it can be poor and let otherwise good hardware down....

whats the name of song

can anyone tell me the name of the songs that have lyrics " we were only freshman" and the other song has "your parents were not boring before you were born, they got that way by paying your bills and listening to you bitch" Thanks for any help. Cam

Re: whats the name of song

O don't no many of the lyrics but if anyone can tell me which song has the words "this means nothing to me.... Oh...."

Hope it makes sense!!!

Re: whats the name of song

I think the song in question is "Vienna" by Visage - 1983 or 84

Now if someone could tell me the name of this song...There are no lyrics, there is a man on a guitar and a woman on a sax. Everything that the man plays the woman repeats. Soft drum beat in the background - the music video has both sitting next to each other on barstools witha dark background...Sometim in the ealy 80's

the freshman

by the verve pipe

Verse 1: (Verse Riff)
When I was young I knew everything
And she a punk who rarely ever took advice
Now I'm guilt-stricken, sobbing with my head on the floor
Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice, no

Pre-Chorus: (Pre-Chorus Riff)
I can't be held responsible, 'cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible, she fell in love in the first place

Chorus: (Chorus Riff)
For the life of me I can not remember
What made us think that we were wise, and we'd never compromise
For the life of me I can not believe
We'd ever die for these sins, we were merely freshmen (Fill 1.)

Verse 2: (Verse Riff)
My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
His girl took a week's worth of Valium and slept
And now he's guilt-stricken sobbing with his head on the floor
Thinks about her now and how he never really wept, he says

Pre-Chorus (Pre-Chorus Riff w/ Fill 2. 4X)

Chorus (Chorus Riff w/ Fill 2. 4X at the end)

Verse 3: (Chorus Riff)
We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt-stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we'd say

Pre-chorus (Pre-Chorus Riff w/ Fill 2. 4X)

Chorus 2X (Chorus Riff 2X)

Outro (Intro Riff 2X w/ Fill 1., then Outro Riff)

Fruityloops and Reason

I was looking for some drum machine softwares on internet, and these 2 programs kept my interests for most.
Can anyone tell me, that strong points and weak points of each programs comparing to the other?
and also if anyone knows any drum machine programs better than these 2, it'll be appreciated if you let me know what they are.

Reson is sick

Reason is a very well integrated series of synths, samplers, drum machines and arrangers. the interfaces are very intuitive with many complex features. It has loop splicing and REX players, a massive sampler, and highly adept automation protocols

Fruityloops is much more simplisic with lower flexibility in the routing options. it is far easier to use, and features the ability to use DirectX and VST plugins for effecting sounds nand sequences.

If you have to ask what the difference is, you should be using Fruityloops. work with friutyloops for a while (there is a save-disabled free version that still lets you get into the meat of the program and export your loops). Once you know what you're doing, look into reason and you'll realise why Reason is so much more expensive.

I hope it gets well soon! Re: Reson is sick

tell ron that i hope he will feel better..he has a one-way ticket to heaven..and i hope u will feel better too..him and u r so nice..well ill talk to u soon i hope

Re: Fruityloops and Reason

I don't know much about fruityloops although I am under the impression that it's a looping program that requires you to input wave files (sample loops) into it and allows you to arrange them simply and quickly.

Reason however, is a series of synths and sampler modules integrated into a studio environment that allows all sorts of channel routing and mixing... In this case, the programs are very different. Reason does have a loop played as one of the instruments so you could import loops to be played. Reasons soundbank is excellent and can be used like a synth to create anything from piano pieces to orchestral arrangements. It's a beat of a program and highly recommended, especially if you have a Midi controller keyboard. Reason hardly touches the CPU on my Mac G4/400 so there is lots of headroom for overload..!

old school ghetto blasters

Hi everyone...

I know its a little off topic, but I was wondering if any of you know of any companies that make modern versions of the old "ghetto blasters" (you know, the big old boomboxes all the rappers had in the 80's) Anyway, I am looking for an "updated one. One that still has all the old looks and everything, but with modern hardware and technology. Anybody know of any websites I can find them at, or any companies that still make them?

Thanks

I've still got mine! It be very cool and bring back memories of moonwalks and backspins. If you go to garage sales and second-hand stores, I'm sure you'll find a vintage model.
