Home recording studio

Dear all,

I hope there is someone out there that can help me.
I recently purchased a Roland VS-880, Alesis RA-100 amplifier, Tannoy
studio monitors, Pioneer DVD/CD+G player, and software for my CD burner on my personal
PC. I cannot for the life of me, get this system to work. I have
been through and through the settings, trying to make music come out
of this thing. Does someone have any input? Do I need a preamp from
my mic or guitar going into the DVD player? It is not amplified. Someone
please rescue me. Thank you.

Keith Bradford

??!!??

Tell us what you have actually done and the problems you are having. I don't see where your Pc comes into this and especially the DVD player. DVD players play DVD's and you can't plug anything into them. You certainly couldn't plug a guitar into it... ;0)

Some VS's have dedicated Guitar inputs although I don't think there is a dedicated Mix input. I have one of the first VS880's and they have neither. If you want to hear something out of the VS then all you need to do is plug the stereo outputs into a line input on the amp although it's a power amp so you will more than likely need the correct lead. Maybe a phono stereo (2 x connectors) to 2 x 1/4" jacks, (Check the back of the amp). Using the VS is a pig at first although once you get past the menu system, it's pretty quick. Also, need somewhere where you can plug in the guitar and if the VS doesn't have a dedicated input, then you will need a DI box.

We need to know more though, you haven't explained where the PC comes into it etc etc... To many guesses...

Hey Keith: It's not real clear to me what you're doing. Why are you not plugging your guitar and mic into the VS-880?{ which has dedicated inputs for this}

Dear All,

I have a Pioneer DVD-555 which can play all kinds
of CD such as CD+G (Karaoke). From there, I'm connecting
to the VS-880 digital recorder. I want to be able to
"download a CD+G music CD and then add a voice to it.
Basically taking a band and adding a singer that I can
have total control over. I think the kHz are going to
be the deciding factor. The DVD says the kHz on it is
between 4-32 and the VS 880 says it needs 44.5kHz.
I believe that I'm screwed boys. Please respond soon.

Thanks......Keith

Re: Home recording studio

Doesthe vs 880 have spdif inputs??? if so get an audio card with spdif outputs and some audio software, n track will suffice and send the audio to the vs. It'll work if you sync the clocks. Or else if you have A/DA converters go from the outputs into the VS. This should be incredibly simple, I think you can figure it out, your not screwed.

So to repeat, run the sound from an output to input. On the device the sounds input to press record and make sure the tracks are record enabled. If using digital i/o make sure the wordclock's are synced.

Hey again Keith: The Kilohertz only matters if you were doing a digital to digital transfer. Try this: Plug the stereo analog OUTPUTS of the DVD player [probably two rca jacks] into the stereo INPUT of the VS-880.
Record your CD+G tracks onto the harddrive of the VS-880. Now you can play these back and listen to them through headphones while you record vocals or whatever on another track. You might need to find a basic tutorial on multitracking.

midi cable adapter

The midi-pc cables supplied with my keyboard fit the joystick
port on my pc as shown. My wife has a laptop and wants to use
the keyboard with it, however the serial port on her laptop
is smaller than the cable end. Are adapters available to convert
the connector size or midi cables with ends for a laptop.

Voice Editing

Does anyone know a software that can "erase" the vocal
voice track? Let me know if there are more than one.
Thanks!!!!!!

Re: Voice Editing

Like Andy said that's impossible on most stereo mixes. If you want just an instrumental of a certain song you may be able to find it as a karaoke file or a midi file.

Re: Voice Editing

Yes you can if you edit one channel by inverting the phase which cancels the info of same vol on each channel therefore removing the vocals or lead solo instrument. You need a pretty sofisticated editor to do this. I am looking for one for my Mac at the moment.
AHogie@excite.com if you find one. Maybe Peak or Protools or Cubase might be able to do it.
Andre

Re: Voice Editing

It's impossible.

USB iBook noise problem

I'm having problems with my iBook picking up noise spikes when a USB device is attached.

I got the iMic and it picks up hard disk noise and other other noise when recording from a mic or from another sound source.

Also, when I use the PC Link that came with my Sony minidisc to record mp3's from my computer onto the minidisc, it picks up the same noise--a periodic click or pop.

Is there a solution to this problem? Do all Macs pick up this noise from a USB connection or just the iBook.

To record to the minidisc, I could use the headphone audio out port but I'm stick with USB for the other direction because the iBook doesn't have a mic or line it port.

I want to record and edit broadcast quality stuff but I don't see how I can do it with this problem.

Solutions, anybody?

Thanks,

Sarah

Re: USB iBook noise problem

The problem has been solved, 100%.

Two things are are needed.

1. The newer version of iMic, the one available only after Sept. 5, 2001.

2. Most important, the Apple system upgrade, System 9.2.

With System 9.2, you can sometimes get good results with the old iMic. With the combination of 9.2 plus the newer iMic, there are zero problems.

iMic...

I have heard verying reports about the iMic from Griffin. I think that there maybe a new driver to sort out some quality problems and a new firmware upgrade. They have sold a lot of those devices as they are a great idea as it's all very well having an analogue input in a computer but the noise that is created by some electrical components in the computer itself can often be a problem. The fact that you can move a USB device away from the computer is a bonus as all the Analogue to Digital stuff can be remote to the computer itself.

I would try moving the iMic as far away from the computer as possible. The drivers seem most likely to be the problem. Check out the link below... Do you power it with USB or with a power supply? This could make a difference... What program are you using for recording?

Good luck

Formac...

There are lots of compatible burners for iTunes. I have an old SCSI drive out of a PC (yamaha rubbish) and it addresses that. Take a look at some of the formac range and check out the drives that have BurnProof technology as they eliminate buffer underuns. If your iMac has Firewire, then get one of those instead of the USB version. USB is slow....

Get a TDK 16x FireWire veloCD

I just got a TDK VeloCD 16x burner with Firewire for my old g3. works like a charm. burns discs in under 5 minutes. has burnproof, so no coasters.

doesn't make my g3 convert mp3 files any quicker though.

How do I use Roland JV-1010 sounds with Sibelius?

I can't figure out how to use JV-1010 Studio Module sounds with Sibelius PC except for General Midi. Inputting JV-1010 MSB Bank numbers like 80 or 81 makes no difference and there's nowhere in the flexitime/sounds window to enter LSB numbers. I can get part way to setting and playing the sound for each channel individually from the module but on full score playback the sounds change to seemingly random selections. Anyone help?

help

I have updated my napster to version 10-3 and I can't get it to open. I keeps saying 'The MSVCIRT.DLL file is linked to missing export MSVCRT.DLL:??_U@YAPAXIZ.' Please can anyone tell me how to fix this problem.
Thank you!

Forget napster now...

...it's finished... Forget the pay as you go, it's a rubbish idea and some of the music they would be charging you to download may not be copyrighted therefore the music industry would be taking a chunk of what you give napster when some of the songs have nothing to do with them... The true hypocracy of the music industry machine then...

Gnutella (Limewire etc) is on...

Steve...R

Re: help

Napster is offline at the moment so you wouldn't be able to do much more with it than play MP3 files. Personally, I'd avoid using it.
