Re: recording music

: hi, I'm trying to record music through the mic jack, but its not working. I know it can be done, but do I need any kind of program or download to do this & put it on a my music file. & what do I need to use to put it on cd.

Actually it would be probably be better to use the line in jack if your recording from cassette, you did'nt say. If you have a CD burner it must have come with software. Also I guess you are using Windows so you have to select Line in on the Windows mixer.

C.D. Burner

I burned a c.d.
It plays on juke box when inserted into cd re-writer but it won't play on my home cd player. Can anyone tell me why, please. Thank you

CD burning Versus CD Printing.

Not all CD players will play burnt CD's. Commerical CD's are printed and not burnt as such. The laser on some CD players aren't optimised for playing burnt CD's so I assume that your CD player isn't that new...

Using Audio specific CD's (and there is a CD colour issue but I can't remember how it works. Gold is good I think) may help. Try the CD on someone elses CD player to be sure. If it plays, then i'm right...

G4 CUBE sound keeps cutting out...Help!!

The sound on my G4 cube keeps cutting out, seemingly at random..i wondered whether anyone might know why..an extensions conflict?..It seems to be particularly bad when i use Soundjam Mp3 player..whether this has anything to do with it i don't know...any help with this would be greatly appreciated...i'm hoping to use the machine live..so this is a big old pain in the arse....any ideas???

I agree...

...with Slate. Fragged drives cause problems.

There could also be a corrupt file. There is no reason why you cube would struggle with an Mp3, it's plenty fast enough for anything. There could be an issue with one of the system files and you should run norton (from the CD) to see if there are any problems. I had to replace my apple audio extension at one point as I lost sound altogether after installing a Korg1212 PCI card driver. These things happen....

Re: G4 CUBE sound keeps cutting out...Help!!

Possibly your hard drive is too full or needs to be defragged. Those machines have IDE drives and if they get too full or too fragmented the drive just can't keep up. Do you have Norton? If you do run speed disc and disc doctor. If your drive is too full check out an audio optimized drive like Glyph's Xproject fire wire version. It is 7200rpm and can easily keep up w/ mp3's.

Destination format error message

I downloaded a WAV file from a friend, but it won't play in winamp like all my others. I get a message saying"Couldn't find destination format". Does anyone have an idea what this means, and can it be fixed? Thanx from Tom

Sounds corrupt...

I haven't had that error on a Mac or a windows machine but would assume that it maybe a corrupt file OR a file that isn't supported by Winamp although waves would be. Probably corrupt.

Just a thought...

Protools plug-ins

Some1 knows where i can find free plug-ins for ProTools?
There some website where i can download it?
Thnx

Re: Protools plug-ins

There are really no PT plugs that are free unless they are cracked or hacked. On PC there are really no RTAS plugs available, on MAC there are many. Are there any specific types you are looking for? Verbs? Compressors? etc...

Re: Protools plug-ins

Hello,
Not only are there no free pro tools plug ins, but theyre all expensive, If your using some for of digidesign hardware, emagics logic audio would work well with it and allows you to use VST plug ins, with there are many of, most for reasonable prices.

help

i'm using a friends cubase VST24 how the heck do you
make it work???/ i have not knowledge of this program
does it comes with sounds ?
do you have to have a midi keyboard to get anything
to work?
is there a manual/tutorial in the program?

Re: help

You clearly know very little about this expensive professional application and therefore I wouldn't bother if I were you... Why do you have the program in the first place? do you want to make music by recording, what?

cubase lm-9 (missing drum sounds on midifiles)

im using cubase vst 3.7 to rework naff sounding midifiles then adding my own guitar parts, vocals etc etc, to make backing tracks for live use.iv started to get my head round soundfonts and vst instruments with some joy, but cant seem to resolve this problem.
if i play the drum track through the soundblaster live output, i can hear all the drum sounds (naff though they might be),but if try to use the lm-9,
things disapear. sometimes no bass drum, sometimes no ride, whatever. iv looked in the drum editor and the drums are there, but dont play back.
i think it got something to do with drum maps, but im realy am stumped on this one.
also, when i make changes to the midi mixer, ie, to alter volumes, pans on diferent midi tracks, why when i stop the track does it revert to the previouse setting? tried to save song, save arrangment, doesnt seem to make any diference. can anyone help a fifty year old newbe who's pulling his hair out over thes two probs, and to be honest, i dont have that much left.

This sounds like your cubase has the wrong setting for "chase". I can't remember where the setting is in Cubase 3.7 but your manual should help you out there, find the setting and change it to the opposite of what it is at the moment, that should do the trick.
In my version the setting is under..

edit..preferences...MIDI.. playback tab. Sorry but I seem to remember it was somewhere different in 3.7, possibly under the options menu.

Good Luck

Re: cubase lm-9 (missing drum sounds on midifiles)

After setting up all instruments Save Bank to be able to reload your settings.
I prefer A0 Dk1 for drums myself (compressor, volume changing, panning on every instrument, is a piece of cake)

Midi notes...

Sounds a little like you are expecting all the Midi drums individual notes to correspond to the notes that play the LM-9. If the kick drum in the midi song is assigned to play a GM drum kick sound, that sound will be sending out on a specific midi note that may not correspond with the note the LM-9's kick drum is on.. I thought LM-9 had a GM set which may work.

The basic way to test this out is to get into an editing mode on the Midi track that holds the drums. Assign the midi output (like you have done) to the LM-9 and the click all the keyboard keys until you hear the LM-9. If you can't hear anything after pressing "every" note then you problem may lie elsewhere. Try assigning the midi output to the soundcard GM set and seeing if you can hear the drums then.

If you are happy to mess around with the original midi track (drums) then move the kick drum notes to the note that works for the LM-9, by dragging all the kick notes to the note that works with the LM=9. A better way is to go to the LM-9 and then assign the notes to the correct notes that the midi track is sending out. In other words Have a look at the midi information on the original drum track and work out what note the kick drum is on. Go back to LM-9 and then move the kick drum note to 'that' note.

This may not be the solution although it's sounding like it might be...

If you are on a Windows platform I recommend Blaze Audio RipEditBurn- www.blazeaudio.com. 30 free trial so you can find out if you agree or not before you plunk down your hard-earned.

Recording Tapes...

Can't recommend a program myself as you haven't spec;d your computer platform.

Other than that, you can plug the tape output straight into your computer's audio input and use one of the many offered recording programs on this site. Check out the file area under recording and the rest should explain itself.

extracting audio tracks from enhanced CDs with Toast

Anybody know how to get Toast to recognize just the audio tracks from an enhanced CD? Whenever I buy a music CD that also contains video, I can't burn any tunes from it!

Hmmmm....

What computer do you have? I think it might be a mac so, I would open the CD icon on the desktop and see where the audio files are... They will usually be in a folder somewhere and will more than likely be .aif OR .wav extensions. If you find them then drag them onto the desktop and then boot toast and drag them onto the toast window...

Real used to distribute a utility for doing this- as I recall it was even free. It's been a long time since I looked, though- I'd rather use a real editor so I can do fades and cuts. I use RipEditBurn from www.blazeaudio.com.

why, when i set the write speed to 12x under the settings before creating a cd(the cd can go upto 16x), does it go down to 2x when actually recording the cd? i went under the drive settings and made sure it was set at 12x also and it still records at 2x....help pleeze!! ;)

connecting my ketboard to midi adapter

I'VE PLUGGED MY KEYBOARD, A RADIO SHACK MD1700, TO MY MIDI BOX,INTO MY COMPUTER THROUGH THE PRINTER PORT AS THE INSTRUCTIONS SAID, YET I STILL CAN'T HEAR MY KEYBOARD THROUGH MY COMPUTER SPEAKERS...DO I NEED A SPECIAL PROGRAM JUST TO SEE IF MY CONNECTION/KEYBOARD & MIDI ADAPTER ARE WORKING PROPERLY? PLEASE HELP!!!

Midi and Audio confusion...

Midi (musical instrument digital interface) is a basic language that allows midi devices to talk to each other. Midi sample dumps are the only way I know of using Midi for transferring audio and you can't hear it when it's transferring as it's data only.

Midi interfaces DO NOT transfer audio and therefore you will not hear anything from your keyboard through your computer speakers as a result of having it connected via Midi.

If you want to hear your keyboard, you will have to connect the keyboards audio output to the audio input on the computer and then use a recording program to record the audio... Use the midi for recording the information you play whilst recording the MIDI with the computer. You can also send midi data (songs etc..) to the keyboard and you will hear the keyboard playing the midi information sent.

how to record

can you show me how to do it the record in computer to cd-r blank i want to record a song but i don't know how to used it can you show me how to used.

Re: how to record

It's relatively simple. First, you need to have your song in WAV format. Then you need a program to burn the WAV file onto a CD. If you look through the software section here, you'll find numerous programs that'll do it. Personally, I use Cool Edit 96 to record stuff and Easy CD Creator 4 to burn CD's.

I have got fruity loops and acid pro but can't really get into them. Could someone please tell me what the essential software is for making good hip hop/dance music that allows for real time effects and creations of actual songs rather than a collection of loops. I have the songs in my head, but don't have the computer knowledge to create them. I really need to know about realtime effects.

Have you read your Fruityloops manual? You say that you want "real time effects" and to create "real songs rather than a collection of loops." Well, Fruityloops allows for both. If you make a collection of loops and then go to the playlist editor and put those loops in order, you have something that sounds a bit more like a song. And if you press the record button and then play the song, any knob tweeking (eg effects) will be recorded. The manual explains in much more detail.

Re: Essentials

I'm not convinced I agree with Slate here, Yes Reason is a fantastic piece of software but is not really designed for recording live instruments which it sounds like you might be wanting to do! I would probably go with Cubase myself (I haven't had experience with Cakewalk etc.. - you may want to do some research) as this can do the full monty with recording instrumental sections. Reason is still a bit of a pattern based sequencer / sampler (like FL) and as such can be limited, for example Propellerheads stress in their manual for reason that you need to sync Reason with another piece of software if you want to record and use vocals. All software has it's limitations, you just need to decide what you really need to do? If you need to put vocal lines, or live instruments against pattern based sequences, then a combination of Cubase and something like fruity loops (or even Reason itself) would be a good bet! If you have external MIDI Hardware which you want to sync to the program then Reason is a definate NO!! It will not act as a master in a synchronised setup! I suppose it all depends on the requirements for "live" recordings! Hope I haven't confused you more!!

Re: Essentials

I would suggest Reason from propellerheads for this. Email me for more info on system requirements etc.
