Can you turn your PC keyboard into a synthesizer?

Hi. First off, let me say I know nothing about sound mixing or anything like that. But I was wondering if anyone knew of a program (prefferably free, but if not, then hopefully cheap!) that can allow me to play short (1-4 seconds long) WAV files with a single keystroke. I need to have something like 5-20 samples that I can bring up instantly. I know it can be done, becuase I've seen a guy do that once, but every program I've come across so far, even if it can play multiple files at once, requires you to load the files like any other Windows program. that takes too long. I need them right at my fingertips, and like I said, I need to switch back and forth between multiple files instantly. can anyone help me out? Thanks.

The free version of Beat It http://www.evolvingsoftware.net and the free version of SoundPlant
http://www.soundplant.org/ will both let you play wav samples from the PC keyboard. The shareware version of SoundPlant will also let you play MP3s.

Re: Can you turn your PC keyboard into a SAMPLE player?

this is called 'mapping' - you map different samples to different keys. many programs will do it, don't know about free. check www.sonicspot.com for a quick easy guide.

I bought Studio 4.0. Have Windows ME. All it does is start the first page then quits. I can't get MIDISOFT online ("This page won't display") on all links to them. Do they have a free upgrade or do I have to spend more to get the thing to operate? If ya'll can help I'll name my next kid after you........if it's like the last ones I'll give it to ya...thanks......

How do I get rid of the hum?

Okay...first of all, I'm very new to recording with my computer. So far, everytime I try to record my guitar, I get _really_ low quality sound with a really bad hum. I mean a hum so bad that it almost completely covers the guitar entirely. I've been able to change the frequency of the hum, but it's always there. I've also tried using different programs but nothing works. So I'm wondering if there's something I just don't know about that will fix it or if I'm stuck forever.

If you can help, here are my contacts:

Ryan,
Are you using a pre-amp for your guitar. ?
kelvin.

Re: How do I get rid of the hum?

I had the same problem and the solution was:
-Disconnect the TV and radio antenna from the computer; (if the computer is connected to a stereoamp and the radio is connected with a
cabelantenna you hear hum in the computer).
Why?......I'ts because a cabelantenna is grounded in both sheald and signal for protection and to avoid this you have to disconnect them.
-good luck

OK This is real basic, but if your standing near your computer with an electric guitar you'll get a huge electromagnetic hum. Back away and see if that helps. IF you still have hum check the cable going from soundcard to guitar. That's all can say with the info you gave.

turn off your VDU when recording - nm

Re: How do I get rid of the hum?

Another possibility is that you have your PC on the
same circuit as other electrical equipment such as
lights or a refrigerator - this can cause really bad
earth noises.

Try to make sure your PC is the only thing running
on that circuit, in recording studios and concerts
you generally use 3 phase power and make sure nothing
is using the same phase as the audio system.

One way to find out what is on the circuit is to look
at your fuse box/power board as they are supposed to
be labeled in most countries.

Jason.
