VCD files

Could you tell me where i must go to download vcd files/movie? Please tell me where i must go.

Why does this occour from MP3 downloaded files

Why do you get glitches when you download MP3 files from other people. Do they have the glitches on the original files and do not know it. Also when you have a glitch on an MP3 file is there software that will remove the glitch.

I know these are probably easy answered questions but I have not found the answer to them yet.

Thanks.

children composing

My 10 1/2 year old son has been taking piano for 3 years and wants to start doing a little composing. I'm wondering which software, if any, he could use or buy, that would help him create and hear back basic compositions. We have a basic iMac.
Thanks.

I learned each of the "big three" Finale, Sibelius, and Encore. Encore
has a neat feature that allows you to edit your score whilst you
listen to the playback. It is fully MIDIfied, and
supports internet. Perhaps start with the lower level Encore software
such as Rhapsody, and then upgrade.

Finale is over-rated, over-hyped by its sales staff,
and has serious layout, midi, and confussion issues.
For example, Coda (the manufacturer) uses the term "layers"
to define 'voices.' But, layer is the term Adobe coined for
it graphics building process. Finale has colorful, cute icons
and complex interface that takes much study. It has a great online forum
but confusingly wordy documentation.

Sibelius is a better choice than Finale, and it deserves your
getting a demo. It is less menu oriented, with more mouse and
keyboard inputs. I have the first release, and seveveral more
have come about since.

cd skips in cars

The music cds I make work ok in home players but skip in cars when I hit a bump. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
What can I do to stop this? Thanks for your time Rich

Re: cd skips in cars

Sounds like your in-car CD player hasn't got a very good anti-shock mechansim. CD-Rs are harder to read than normal CDs, and so are more likely to suffer skipping. The only way around it is to find a different CD player which will cope with the bumps, or a new car with softer suspension.

Comparing notation software

I'm putting down my pencils and am ready to purchase software for music notation. But which should I get? Is there a website that compares and contrasts what's out there?

i.e.: I hear Finale Allegro is often used for sacred music. Does anyone know what is commonly used for chamber music? or contemporay-classical? What I write generally has maximum 10 or 12 instruments, both traditional & non-traditional, sometimes with voice.

Any ideas? Thanks.

WinMx

i have a copy of winmx. i can search. i can download. but whenever someone tries to download from my files they time out waiting. i don't know if i am supposed to do something or if this is automatically taken care of with the program. if any one has any information that might help with this please let me know.

changing format of MP3's to record

I have been recording songs off of WinMX and i can play them on my computer, but when I go to Sony CD Extreme to burn them it says the burn was successful but nothing comes out on the CD. Do you know how I can change the format to a sound wave or any other way I can get it to burn?

Re: changing format of MP3's to record

First, you are probably burning data to disk (that is what an MP3 is, data, which a regular CD player cannot play). Second, make sure you burn audio to disk (WAV files are data files that convert to audio data files on a CD which a regular CD player can play). Thirdly, go to http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/news/224/ to find out how to convert MP3's to WAV files using Winamp which is free at winamp.com.

compression rates

I know the compression rate for CD quality mp3 comes out to about 1 megabyte a minute... What about wav, midi, mod, and atrac3?

Re: compression rates

WAV, MIDI, MOD aren't compressed. The size of a WAV file is dependant on the sampling frequency used. The higher the frequency, the larger the file - you can see the relationship by looking at the files on a CD which are recorded using a 44kHz sampling frequency.

MIDI and MOD files don't contain music - they contain information about notes, their duration and the instrument used to play them. When the information is fed into a sequencer, the information is used to trigger the instruments to play the specified notes.

ATRAC3 is Sony's alternative to MP3, and stands for Adaptive Transform Accoustic Coding. It can compress a CD track to approximately one tenth of its original size. However, this method still appears to be limited to Sony's own equipment.

Hope that helps.

digital/analogue software?

I'm a journalist and I've been asked by Neue Zürcher Zeitung to write a piece on the digital/analogue interface. In particular, I'm looking for software designed to make digital recordings "sound" analogue, for instance produce a "vinyl" crackling sound, or reproduce the sound qualities of old Moog synths. What's available, and where??? Any pointers gratefully received! Thanks.

audio recording with Windows 95

Who can help me getting started with the right software and or hardware to record my children playing the piano, guitar and flute onto the computer and then burn a CD to send to relatives? I have a Pentium 200MMX with Wind '95 and a standard sound card.

Re: audio recording with Windows 95

There are numerous software programs that will record. Something like Cool Edit would be ideal. Have a look in the software section.

The main problem is that you'll need a very good microphone and very quiet surroundings to ensure you don't end up with lots of background noise and hiss.

portamento soundfonts???

Can you get "Portamento" in bs-1, or is this a problem of Soundfonts?

Portamento is "sliding" of notes in "Monophonic" mode. It is a very expressive synthesizer technique.

Glen Diamond.

Spliting Music

I am in need of help. I have taken on a project of taking a song, such as the ones on the radio, and needing the vocal only. I need help finding a progrom that will allow me to take the song, whether it is mp3 or wav or even cda, and spliting it up into its vocal, bass, and instrument areas. Then be able to remove the instrument and whatever other parts that I don't need and only being left ith the one I need, such as vocal only. If anyone knows of a program that I can use, it would be a great help. Please just reply to this or email me with the name of teh program. Thanks in advance.

Re: Spliting Music

There is no such program. Removing individual components from a song is impossible, since there is no unique feature that enables one to be singled out. Some claim to be able to remove the vocals by removing the centre of the stereo soundstage, but that also removes anything else that happens to be in the same position. Filters also don't work because the human voice spans a wide frequency range, overlapping with other instruments.

Level Matching

Hi,

I live in the UK and I have just brought a second hand XP50 and I am in the process of developing sounds for a live set. I am having real problems with the volume of each individual patch. Could anyone tell me the best way of matching the levels of the sounds so that no more engineers scream at me while playing live

Thank you in advance

Splitting AIFF tracks on my Mac

Hey there,

I used to use my PC to to record large wav. files and then split some tracks. I used CDwav which was a really easy program to use. Now I have a Mac and want to do the same thing. What software do I need to do the same exact thing or could I use CDwav on my mac? any suggestions?

Thanx,
Scotty D.

Re: Splitting AIFF tracks on my Mac

Hi,

I am not a mac user myself, so I dont know for sure. However, the best way to find out is to go to http://www.hitsquad.com/smm (software downloads library), its divided by categories, go under Audio Editing, and select mac os, you'll get a list of software, and it should describe what it does. You'll probably find what you want there.

Hope that helps and sorry I couldnt help with more,
Hish

Best Software for recording, transposing, printing music

I am trying to decide what software to purchase.
What I want to be able to to is record music from my keyboard. Put Guitar Chords on the music, Tranpose the music to different keys and print the music out. So far Cakewalk seems to offer most of what I want.I would also like the software to analyse the music and offer the best chords. Oh yeah and not pay a bomb for it.

Compiling a VCD

i am burning an avi file from my drive to a cd, but when i use nero it first encodes the video which takres a really long time. is this supposed to take a long time? about 450megs - 2 hours? thanks a lot

I suppose you used Nero's VCD template, right.
That means you were getting Nero to 1st convert
your avi to mpeg1 then to burn the mpg file to a
CDRom. Converting avi to mpg does take a long time,
depending on the tool you used. 2 hrs for 450m seems
a bit too long, though. You may consider using other
encoder to convert first then to use Nero to burn
the CD. Check out this site for everything you need --

I set up with OMS and was getting a midi in and out signal on the transport bar and my keyboard was playing as it should with the local control off. However when i tried to record, this stopped working properly and only the midi out seemed to be working, i rebooted and the same thing happened. Any ideas? should i use OMS? if not could someone help me with a brief step by step guide. I know its a big ask but I'm going mad.

what else do i need with reason?

If i buy reason, do i need to buy a seperate sampler, synths etc. to make good quality music?

Re: what else do i need with reason?

: If i buy reason, do i need to buy a seperate sampler, synths etc. to make good quality music?

It really depends on what type of music you want to
make. Reason has the following built in - Analog
synth, sampler, drum machine, loop player, mixer,
effects, pattern sequencer, and realtime sequencer.

Basically you can make complete songs with Reason.

If you wanted to add a lot of vocals rather than
short vocal samples then I would recomend getting
a multi-track recorder as well - my favourite is
<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/n-Track_studio/">n-Track Studio</a> - I haven't seen anything much
better for the low price.

I hope this helps,
Jason.

CDG PLAYER

Hi!

I have recorded 20 CDG's (Christmas Music) to my hard disk (using hardware that records not only the music but the CDG subcode - Plextor CD-RW).

For a family Christmas Party I would like to not only display the "Karaoke" lyrics on my computer monitor but also on the television set in the next room (by
connecting the TV to the TV-OUT connector on my graphics card).

I'd also like to be able to play one song at a time after which ask the guests what song they would like to sing next and then select it (with the mouse or keyboard) and play the selection (as opposed to having all the songs play in sequence)

Is any of this "do-able" with any of the software "players" available?

Thanks
Jack

Creating WAV files from cassette 8 track (TASCAM)

Hello

I am trying to create WAV files of my music on my PC labtop with the end of generating Mp3's to place online + burn Cd's
A friend advised me to download SoundForge, then contact my Tascam to the Mic input on my PC!
Is there another way
Any other possibilities
Please email me at Uncut@CayleyMonte.com
Thanks for your help
God Bless your holidays!

Cheers!

Re: Creating WAV files from cassette 8 track (TASCAM)

I dont think there's another way, unless it involves more expensive equipment. However, u might want to use the Line In, instead of the Mic In, to reduce the recording noise.

Hish

Re: Creating WAV files from cassette 8 track (TASCAM)

Thank You Hish

Noise or buzzing problems possible answer

For those of you that are trying to record music from your stereo system to your computer and are getting humming, buzzing or noise of some kind, the answer might be you have a ground loop problem.
This is an unbalanced AC ground coming from one of your AC outlets. If you are using cable on your stereo system and are getting the above problems try removing the cable hookup to your stereo and then check your recording.
For more detailed information do a search for ground loop problems on internet.
