DFreqTIP - Vary Your Vocals with Sound Forge

DFreqTIP - Vary Your Vocals with Sound Forge

Copyright 2001 by Scott R. Garrigus. Reprinted with permission.

Usually when recording a song, you want to get as accurate a
reproduction of your vocals as possible. But there may be times when
you want to apply certain special effects to your vocal parts. Sonic
Foundry's Sound Forge provides a number of tools that allow you to
process your vocals in a variety of ways.

TELEPHONE CONVERSATION
I'm sure you've heard this effect before in many pop songs. It makes
the vocal sound as if it is being heard over a telephone receiver.
This type of effect is very easy to do in Sound Forge:

1) Select your audio data.
2) Choose Process > EQ > Parametric.
3) Choose the Phone Line Effect preset. The settings for this preset
are: Filter Style = Band-pass, Center Frequency = 800, Band Width =
2, Amount = -25dB, and Output Gain = 0dB.
4) Click OK.

THE CHIPMUNKS
This effect is very famous and can be heard on all the Alvin & The
Chipmunks albums. It can be achieved by simply changing the pitch of
the vocal part. The trick is in keeping the part the same length,
because when you increase the pitch of audio, you normally shorten
the length at the same time. Here's how to get around this problem:

1) Select your audio data.
2) Choose Effects > Pitch > Shift.
3) Set the Semitones parameter to 7, and leave the Cents parameter
at 0.
4) Set the Accuracy to High.
5) Activate the Apply An Anti-Alias option.
6) Activate the Preserve Duration option.
7) Choose Speech 3 in the Mode drop-down list.
8) Click OK.

SINISTER SOUND
You can also use pitch changes to achieve the opposite of the
chipmunk effect. Instead of the light and cheery chipmunk sound, you
can lower the pitch of your vocal to get a very low and ominous
effect, like that of an evil movie character or a sinister sounding
laugh. Here's how:

1) For this example, try recording someone laughing. Make it a slow,
evil type of laugh.
2) Select your recorded audio data.
3) Choose Effects > Pitch > Shift.
4) Set the Semitones parameter to -7, and leave the Cents parameter
at 0.
5) Set the Accuracy to High.
6) Activate the Preserve Duration option.
7) Choose Speech 3 in the Mode drop-down list.
8) Click OK.

To spice it up a bit, try applying some reverb to your evil laugh
effect. Choose Effects > Reverb, and then choose the Cathedral
preset. Click OK. Does that send a chill down your spine?

adjusting frequency

Many songs are recorded slightly higher or lower than standard 440-A pitch. This makes practice sessions very frustrating. What software would enable me to re-calibrate frequency-shifted recordings back to 440-A?

Shifting the freq...

It's just a matter of speeding it up or slowing it down. This can be a problem with tape machine and record players as they are not fixed frequencies like a CD player's calibrator.

A standard pitch shifting hardware or software facility is all you need as well as a good ear...!

Looking for recording software for PC

Thanks for your time, I`m currently using Cakewalk professional, it`s time to upgrade to a professional quality recording software. I`ve recieved 2 recomendations so far, Emagic`s Logic Audio Platinum and Cubase VST/32. Any other suggestions or opinions on the two above. Thanks again, Scott.

Hi,

If you are comfortable with Cakewalk, then the natural
upgrade to me would be Sonar XL. I personally,
dont like cakewalk or Sonar and prefer ACID Pro 3.0,
however if you are seeking professionality then I back
Jon with either Sonar or Pro Tools. Nothing else
springs to mind!

Hish

protools + sonar worth a look

protools only really shines when u have some of their hardware though and it isn't cheap! nuendo also from steinberg is worth checking out too. btw there aint nothing un-professional about cakewalk - it's just another host. what type music u do? have u looked at fruityloops? (4 electronic)

Re: protools + sonar worth a look

I agree!! If you know what you're doing, then Cakewalk is really worth it weight. I'm just getting into Cubase but Cakewalk is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy more user friendly especially if you're new to the game. Cubase appears to have a more powerful engine running it but if you have good memory and sound hardware then Sonar with be more than fine!!

Re: Advice on DJ software

You'll have to be a little bit more spacific, as in what you want the software to do; Record, Edit, Compose... Whatever.

3 things spring to mind. 1st, the windows XP upgrade that Sean told you about,
you might also look and find out if it already has the patch in the installation
file or you need to get an extra one and apply it after the installation
before rebooting. I imagine the patch is already included. At least that
was the case when I installed it. Finally, this was the case with me and I would
say 99% chance that its your problem too. When you install
choose CUSTOM and check out (cancel) DIRECT CD. after rebooting your
system, go to the setup directory where you ran the
original setup to install and there should be a DIRECT CD
directory that has setup.exe in it. Run that and install Direct CD,
and restart again. that SHOULD fix the problem. For some reason
it messes up when you install direct CD with the rest.
It worked with me, so I hope this is it.

Good luck,
Hish

MIDI keyboard, soundcard & software for my kids

I have 3 children, twin boys 13yo and a 12 yo daughter, all are musical (grade 6 violin & celo).
I need suggestions for the type of gear to get them using th computer to compose music and do what ever else is possible with computers and music. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I hve no knowledge at all on this subject.
David Cooper

Re: MIDI keyboard, soundcard & software for my kids

ok u need a good pc - 600MHz maybe min with plenty of RAm - 128MB being a min. A soundblaster Live! 1024 soundcardcard is a standard and for keyboard anything midi compatible will do - even one which has built in tunes/sounds etc ie not just a controller keyboard. Re software u could try looking at Quartz Audio they have a free 4 track audio/midi sequencer that would keep youngsters busy for a long time. Data Becker's Music Centre Pro is the commercial release which has everything + looks nice + is easy to use. Cubasis is also an option but more expensive. Also there is Magix music centre - try all the demos before u buy + u decide which u or the kids like best is the golden rule!

Mp3 players

Do you HAVE to "burn" Mp3 files on to a cd in order to listen to the mp3?

Re: Mp3 players

Obviously, yes, if you wish to listen to the MP3s via a CD player. Or you can listen to your MP3s from your hard drive. No burning required.

realistic and decent percussion?

I have been using midi to produce my "songs" but somehow the midi drum voices/instruments don't sound real enough, can anyone help me? how can I record or make drum parts which are more professional and realistic?

hmm...more options

: I have been using midi to produce my "songs" but somehow the midi drum voices/instruments don't sound real enough, can anyone help me? how can I record or make drum parts which are more professional and realistic?

Hi,

Looks like you got quiet a variety of options already concerning your drums. drk_sum brought up a good point, what genre?
It makes a huge difference. For example if you are doing drum and bass, techno, electronic in general, then
there can be MANY software suggestions. If you are talking about R&B, hip hop, rap, that's a whole different story
and if you are talking about rock and metal, that is DEFINETLY a whole different deal.

I am not a real midi user, so I cant help u in that department. However, I also look around
and try to reinnovate in my drum creation process. If you want percussion sounds as in Conga, Bongo,
etc.. then Percussion Studio is the program. If you want regular drums (bass, snare, hihat, etc)
then there are 2 options that *I* could think of.

1. Get loops. there are mp3 and wave files in the web that are
created by drummers, professionally recorded and its there for the
purpose of providing drums to drum-lacking musicians, such as your case.
Those long files have many different loops under each file seperated by
a silence pause. What's cool about them is that the beats under each file are going
to be under the same genre, the same tempo, and the same quality of sounds
for the bass, snare, etc... It will also include fill ins, breaks, etc..
i.e. getting one such file and applying it to waveknife which splits audio file into
many divided by the silence pauses, you can then have around 20 drum loops, as real
sounding as it gets, with fillins, etc...

The problem with that, is that flexibility is gone, because you'll
have to rely on what the beat offers. You can then try to get one of thoose
loop arrangers like ReCycle and rearrange the loop to fit your music even more. Usually I end up customizing my music
to the drum loops instead of vise versa.

2. You can do as I think Nige; suggested, and get your self a variety
of kit samples and use that with (many programs) I suggest Reason's Redrum
and construct your own loops. The problem with this method is that its
both time consuming and requires a lot of work to achieve the REAL sounding
quality because you would have to play with all the attributes
of every single drum hit, such as volume, pitch, panning, etc..

If you have the patience and would like to creat your drum loops
yourself like some feel strongly about, then this is the best
solution.

Finally, and I know this was suggested too, get a real drummer. However,
I dont consider this a real point because I assume that you dont have/cant have a
drummer and that's why you are seeking other alternatives which is the same
problem I am facing.

Hope any of that helped,
Hish

What genre?

Use drum loops.
Actually, my MIDI production work does sound realistic in the drums department, but it works like this:
Scour the internet for acoustic drum samples, and split them into snare, kick, openhi, closedhi, cymbal, toms. Then, layer two kicks, tow hats, and four snares together. Also, layer three cymbals together (panned left, right, and center). Also, go light on the toms, stick to snare kick hat cymbals. Also, if you're using closed hihats, your songs are already lame anyways.

I use this setup for hard rock (with full on distorted guitars etc) and no one can tell that they aren't real. You just use open hihats for the verse and ringing cymbals for the chorus. And always filter the low frequencies out of your cymbals.

For lighter work, it's all about adding a touch of reverb.

As for using other realistic MIDI instruments, the only good realistic instruments are pianos and strings. A MIDI bass will work too, but only if you run it through a powerful lowpass filter like fromage from the OhmBoyz.

In the end, your setup will work best like this:
Filtered MIDI bass
Piano
Strings
You playing guitar
Drumloops
Small touches and hits using MIDI drums. (RMF is good)

Re: realistic and decent percussion?

: I have been using midi to produce my "songs" but somehow the midi drum voices/instruments don't sound real enough, can anyone help me? how can I record or make drum parts which are more professional and realistic?

I am using DrumTrax that comes with Cakewalk HomeStudio and integrates with Session Drummer with great success. I also purchased the expanded DrumTrax lib to fill out my MIDI drum capabilities. DrumTrax are MIDI drum sequences that were captured by a professional drummer with a pro MIDI drum kit. If you do not use Cakewalk, they have a libraian product that can help you arrange drum tracks easily. I integrate this into Cakewalk, then tweek a small amount and that is it.

I have not found anything else that gets drums this close and real sounding, and is quick in getting tracks layed down. If anyone knows of anything else, please post.

Find a decent drummer

You probably could do with the human touch. You could quantize or you could just find someone who CAN play drums and do a bit of recording. Most drummers will be thrilled enough to have someone record them so just put an ad in a paper or something.

does anyone know how to convert a digitonix dig file to a wav so

i'm trying to put the beats i'm making on digitonix on a cd so if anyone knows how to convert those .dig files to a wav or a mp3 please help me out

Re: does anyone know how to convert a digitonix dig file to a wa

: i'm trying to put the beats i'm making on digitonix on a cd so if anyone knows how to convert those .dig files to a wav or a mp3 please help me out

I dont know of such program, so my method is probably not the best possible method. However, it should work decently
provided that you atleast are able to play the dig file. What you can do is get Total Recorder. Total Recorder
captures the sound from your machine. So, you can
record on total recorder while playing the .dig
file. total recorder makes a virtual driver, so you can
play and record at the same time. The quality of recording
is pretty decent, and you can save as wave from total recorder.

Hope that helps,
Hish

Midi help. Tough one!! Please

I have a Opcode Midi Translator 11 that I used to play my Yamaha PSR-79, along with Miracle Piano System 2.0. I have a Mac G3/400 beige and white with 192mb ram. I use to run 8.6 and recently installed 9.1. I had used the Piano System and decided to start playing again. I reinstalled it and hooked up my Midi 11., into my modem port and had all the proper connections but when I open my Piano software, it would play the introduction and then stop and all my menu selections would be grayed out. I noticed while the intro to Miracle was playing that the green led (out) signals were being indicated but I cannot get the red led (in) to come on. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have tried to use the program with all the extensions off but the midi manager and still no luck.

Thanks
