To be a composer

I am agood music lover. Also like to compose music. Please help me to get familiar computor music.

Re: To be a composer

When you consider what software to use for Music composition, you really just have to ask yourself HOW you like to make it. There are MANY programs out there with many different styles of inputting you music.

If you like a linear, logical entry style, you might consider ACID or Fruity Loops. These programs are great for beats and working with loops. Keep in mind that if you are going to use long samples (an entire vocal line) you should break up you long line into chunks for these programs. It will thread the sample with the other samples much tighter.

Then there is the the more open ended softwares like Cubase, Cool Edit, Cakewalk, Wavelab or ProTools. These are mind numbingly powerful "studio" style softwares. You can make tracks (bass, drums, voc, etc.) and then move them around to mix them. I love these programs, but they are brain intensive. These are for full studio applications and can cost you more time than necessary, digging around in VST and options... They are the best though, especially ProTools.

Of course I always recommend an Acoustic Guitar and the corner Liquor Store. That is where most great music comes from anyway... :)

Re: To be a composer

Do you want to make computer music? <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/FruityLoops_win95/">FruityLoops</a> might be a good place to start.

Multitrack splitting

How to split a CD Audio Track into Multi-Tracks? That is to separate all instruments (including the voice) into their respective track?

Whilst Acoustica do make some good software this program
simply does not split a song into individual tracks.

Jason.

Re: Multitrack splitting

The best thing you can do, is to make samples of different parts of the song.
After that, you can study them to find out which parts do or don't have certain instruments. If you listen very carefully, you might even hear spots where just one instrument is playing. By breaking the song down into bits like this, you could create enough varied types of samples to use as instruments, loops, and ambiences. Vocals will probably be too difficult to deal with. For vocals, try to find an A Cappella version of the song, or a remix with an A Capella section. Otherwise, find a version which has maybe only drums and vocals or something like that. That's really the only way to remix a multitrack without having the actual multitrack recording. Anyway, the way i just described is essentially illegal to do without permission of the original copyright owner.

Anyhow, Jason is correct, you can't make a multitrack from a mix. Maybe someday in the future this will be possible. But it's a lot like baking a cake and then trying to take the eggs out later. It's not really possible unless you're a forensic scientist. And even then, the results are less than ideal.

Unfortunately this can't be done, yet. The problem is
basically the same as converting a CD Audio Track into
MIDI- which also can't be done yet.

converting a karaoke disc to vcd

i have bought an abba karaoke disc and i cant play on my pc, can i convert it to vcd as when i play in my computer i only get the music no video

thanks

Re: converting a karaoke disc to vcd

try Virtuosa Gold..the best karaoke player with many other features

This can be done ...

In one of 2 ways, depending on what reader (CDRom, burner) you have installed on your machine. Very few readers can play a CD+G disk directly from a reading device.

If you use WinCDG Pro, create an image of the disk using CloneCD, mount the CCD file into Daemon Toolz, and then use WinCDG to playback the CD+G file from your virtual drive. The music will play and the graphics will show.

If you want a VCD, follow the help files at www.karaokeplayground.co.uk to rip, convert and burn a karaoke VCD disk.

ERROR Class not registered

Whenever I try to play a .avi file i get an error that says
"Class not registered"

Time to cash in your chips.

Sounds like maybe the movie player is trying to execute JavaScript or Java, which is totally innappropriate for a movie player, but not unheard of. Otherwise, it could be that you are missing a need .DLL file. The third possibility is that your file type settings for the operating system are corrupt. This happens a lot in Windows. The Registry holds information about file types, but different programs enter or change the file types in different ways. On my old system, I had to manually edit the registry to get file types to work with the correct programs. I had discovered that an image viewing program edited part of the registry but not all of it, and also that the File Manager (in the Windows folder) helps some file type errors but hurts others.

If you start dabbling with the file type window, you'll notice that there can be commands set to execute for different file types. All i can say is, try removing your software and reinstalling it. Actually, it's even worth it to reinstall your entire Windows system. This is because it's the only way to guarantee an almost clean slate.

Before you do any reinstalling, download the Freeware program InControl. It runs on Windows. This great program lets you log each installation. This is critical if you have problems of any sort with a program. InControl helps you find out which programs mess the most with your system.

Also, you should download the freeware programs JSUIC (JoneSoft Un-Installer Controller). This is a fabulous program, because it does a better job of uninstalling programs than "InstallShield" or any "Install/Uninstall programs".

With Jonesoft uninstaller controller and InControl on a backup disk, you are now ready to backup the rest of your work and reformat your drive.

First, back up all of your files to CD or ZIP or diskette or removeable hard drive. If you choose to back up to another hard drive, be sure to keep it plugged into a power source. Unplugged hard drives can "die" if they lose too much residual power in a few hours.

Second, reformat your entire hard drive. This is done by running FDISK in pure DOS mode. You will need your original installation CD's and it helps to have a startup diskette. After you delete your partitions in FDISK, restart the computer. After restarting, run FORMAT on your drive. These two operations will give you a relatively fresh drive, but not perfect. There's still some old data hiding on there, but it probably won't be trouble unless it's LINUX or something like that.

If for some reason reformatting the drive fails, a reliable alternative is to use a macintosh to format the drive. Macintosh software can do a "LOW LEVEL FORMAT" even though Windows can't. The best initialization choice is 100% UNALLOCATED. If you want, set it to write zeroes to the disk too. This is helpful, and recommended, but not absolutely necessary. Be prepared to wait many hours before the drive is done. A good time to do it is at night before you go to bed. When you wake up, it will probably be done or at least almost done.

To do a low-level format on a PC (if you don't know anybody with a mac), you need to get a special program from the motherboard manufacturer or some other source, perhaps the drive manufacturer. However, it won't be anything that comes with Windows, so do'nt bother trying. Anyhow, after you do a low-level format using a macintosh computer, you can do FDISK and FORMAT, and it should now work.

While running FDISK, you may notice the options of creating partitions. If this is at all familiar to you, now is a good time to create an Audio partition.
Partitioning your drive can help to contain some write errors. Since many audio programs do direct to disk recording, or caching, it's also useful to compartmentalize the disk by partitioning. Most importantly, a separate partition for web programs and internet files is an great help, since web browsing is extremely disk intensive AND extremely instable, AND quite a bit risky to your computer's security. If partitioning is way over your head, don't worry. Most people don't do it. But people who do partition disks (such as system administrators) always see the benefits of doing it in the long run. Think of a disk partition as being like a fence. "Good fences make for good neighbors".

After this long process of formatting is done, you can reinstall Windows.
This time, you should do a Custom Installation. That way, you can choose which things you need or don't need. By now you probably know whether or not you use NetMeeting or MS Paint or extra cursors or whatever. A carefully chosen Custom installation is even smaller than the "Compact" installation. Anyhow, it's worth it for your own peace of mind.

After you reinstall Windows, the first thing you should install is InControl. This will allow you to log all subsequent installations. In otherwords, from now on you will have more control over dealing with buggy programs, as long as you run InControl before each installation. Be sure to read the manual, so you get full control of the features. Also, be sure to log other files such as your .INI files. After that, intall JSUIC

Anyway, at this point, if something doesn't install correctly, now you have the Uninstaller controller, so you can do much cleaner reinstalls or removals if you need to.

The nice thing about reinstalling a whole system, is that you get a fresh Registry. This will reduce the size drastically, but especially if you did a custom installation with fewer accessories and extra crap. This makes your system more stable and probably a bit faster on some operations.

You may be complaining about reinstalling your entire system, but it's a very wise thing to do when you start getting variable-related errors such as "Class not registered". Now that you have the opportunity to reinstall each software package, you have the opportunity to make wiser decisions, now that you've already test run many programs. Any programs that are unfamiliar, you might not even need, so now you may have the opportunity to get rid of them.

This reinstalling also will help to clear out viruses, trojan horses, worms, bots, adware, spyware, configuration bugs, corrupted preference files, and plenty of other snafus.

Essentially, by reinstalling the system, you are stacking the odds more in your favor, and taking power away from the ploblem causes and putting it back into your own hands. At least for a while.

Computer maintennance is like changing the oil in your car. It has to be done if you expect to keep things running smoothly.

After you do this, you'll realize that it's really not so bad once you get used to it. The first few times feels really uncomfortable, but if you make it a habit, it becomes like flossing your teeth.

After all this stuff, if you are careful, try running your movie player again and check out your .AVI files. If you STILL get this message, get rid of all traces of that movie/media player, and get a better one from somewhere else!

If it can't run on a clean install, then it is surely UTTER CRAP, or a trojan horse of some sort. This is actually very common. You don't need crap on your system, so get rid of it permanently, and delete all of your backups of it too.

One thing about backups. Backups are great for storing installation packages, but anytime you make a backup of a troubled system, you increase the likelihood that you'll reinfect your new system with bad old data. So if you can help it, only make backups of installation programs and archives and maybe some preferences files. It may seem like hard work setting your preferences and settings of each program, but it's worth it in case they are corrupted. .INI files and other configuration or preference files get corrupted easily because they are in use so often. Hard drives still aren't perfect, and operating systems are for sure troubled.

Now that you're reinstalling stuff, you might want to make better choices about where to put things. Maybe you need a specific place to store your audio programs, and a different place to store your internet programs. If you were clever enough to partition your drive(s) or use more than one drive, you're in a good position now to take advantage of those kinds of things.

Well, that's that. But there are no guarantees. After all, the most consistentely buggy products are by Microsoft. There aren't many alternatives either. Even I got phased by trying to install Linux. If you do decide to try Linux, try Mandrake Linux instead of RedHat Linux. RedHat is more standard, but Mandrake seems to install quite a bit better and is standard enough. I don't think there are many Linux audio programs yet, but i'm pretty sure Windows can be run over Linux, or you can create a dual boot system.

Enough of that.

AUDIO INPUT ON APPLE MACS

Ive connected my Apple Mac G4 up to a Yamaha 01V mixing desk. And i've also plugged a rodes mt2 mic into the desk. Now i can get sound out of the mixer through the mic yet i cant when i try to run it through the computer. Ive altered the sound control setting so in the input box it says analogue , and the wires run from the monitor outs of the desk to the analogue ins of the soundcard of the mac(Audiowerk 2). It has worked before but it has just stopped recently when i changed some wires. And also everytime when i go back to the sound control panel it has reverted back to internal cd input, oh and i have also tried the "check signal button" and "play sound through output device". Can anyone help!!!

Re: AUDIO INPUT ON APPLE MACS

Ben, sounds like you need to remember which wires you changed...if that's when the problem started - that's almost certainly the cause

4 track to sonar recording.

I am shure that I am asking something that has already been answered or I am soo lost that the help files aren't making sense but... Our band has recorded seperately on a tascam 414 4 track. One inst. on each track. I have now recorded each track seperately into sonar and I am having no luck in shifting the tracks so that the seperate tracks line up properly to the drum track. These are not MIDI tracks. It is all analog recorded seperately. Any ideas on how to shift these around to align them? Input appreciated.

<a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/FruityLoops_win95/">FruityLoops</a> & <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SonicFoundryAcid/">ACID</a> are good places to start. You'll need an audio editor for recording vocals and making samples. Try <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/cgi/htdig/htsearch.cgi?config=htdig&restrict=%2Fsmm%2Fprograms%2F&exclude=&method=and&format=builtin-long&words=audacity">Audacity</a>. Protools and Cubase get a delay when using a SB64

I am Recording using the Line-In of my "SoundBlaster 64" on a P2 Win98 machine. When starting a simple application to record sound (e.g. a simple wave recorder) there is no problem.
However, when recording with Cubase or Protools I get a (±1 sec.) audiodelay between the actual signal and the reaction of the program. :(
Does anyone know the remedy to my illness ??
Thanks!

Is my computer to slow?

Can someone help me with my computerproblem before I go crazy?
I have soundcard, Maxistudio ISIS, Logic Audio and some plugins installed on my computer. I used to have a Celeron 500MHz but I have changed to a PentiumII 400MHz because I was told it was a processor-related problem. The problems I had are still here though.
I use both midi- and wavefiles in Logic and everything runs smoothly until I start to use plugins. I try not to use to many heavy plugins on the channels but it doesn´t matter, one reverb is enough. I keep getting the so called PC-AV error in Logic.
Here´s a list of all that I have been told to do:
-use a Pentium instead of a Celeron
-upgraded memory - 512Mb
-customized all kinds of different settings in the
computer; vcache, virtual memory and much more
-upgraded drivers; soundcard and Logic
-defrag - harddrive

So, why doesn´t this help?
Is it the harddrive? Is it the soundcard?
What else is there to do? Do I have to buy a Pentium IV, 2.6GHz?

Re: Is my computer to slow?

As you've already done a lot to try to fix the problem
you only really have one step left to find out if it's
your PC that's the problem.

1. Back up all your data
2. Format your hard disk
3. Re-install windows and only the software you need

This will fix potential registry problems and will
clean out your system directory.

If you still have problems after this then come back
and ask for help again.

Jason.
