YOu can't retrofit soundcards to laptops, so you're only real option is a Soundblaster Extigy:

You can get a good external usb card I suggest the Gigaport from pcdj.com It has multiple output jacks which are rca already. and it also does dolby 7.1...TIGHT!

I want to upgrade to a more sophisticated program. I've been referred to Cubase and Reason. Are there any others that would be a step up from Acid. I need a program good for hip-hop production and vocals.

It sounds like you only have one of the basic versions of ACID. reason and cubase aren't more sophisticated than acid.
do your homework before you listen to your friends or people who obviously aren't even in the music business/

I personally like Fruityloops....because of the plug ins and the beats etc. However I wonder is this a step up or a step down? compare prices. That helps too in determining what can do more etc..

FL Studio is the next step from acid or Ejay. Check it out at www.flstudio.com - has a demo download and a getting started guide that will teach you how to use it. Also, check out the cool demo song (just load up the program and press play) it will show you want FL Studio is capable of.

I write New Age / ambient type music and would like to make `relaxation' type CD's. What would be the basic equipement I need? I have a Midi keyboard and have recorded pieces in Cakewalk, importing wave files made on Sawcutter. I assume I would need CD Burner software - but would the quality be good enough. Would I have to create MP3 files?

Grateful for any help

Advice for realtime MIDI, Sounfonts in Windows

Hello.
I have been browsing around SMM for years now and I need advice on which software I need to do the job.

I would like to use my MIDI controller keyboard to play soundfonts in realtime with the idea that it could be used live. ie some effects here/there, panning etc.

I have a MIDI controller and a normal onboard 2-chan audio chip in my PC. What is this VST and VSTi, and do I need a wavetable emulator so I can use soundfonts?

Would appreciate any advice, as I'm poor and cant afford hardware synths! Its easy enough finding recording software but for live/realtime - its very confusing. Thanks!

I'll tell you two programs that are in my experience totally usable professional packages with cut down versions for the home user.

1. Logic Audio Platinum (or the cheap one Express)
2. Final Cut Pro (or the cheap on Final Cut Express)

People new to the internet have a hard time working out what is legitimate and what is crap.

Firstly dont give out your personal information, especially your contact details like your phone number.

And secondly, you probably saw an advertisement saying you had won a prize. There is millions of these out there, and all they care about is you clicking on their link to take you to their site to show you more adds.

Try installing the latest drivers for your motherboard and/or sound card.

Not having motherboard drivers installed can cause lots of I/O problems, like when disk is read - sound stops. etc.

Lots of people get this when they install Windows and it detects all the hardware but with crappy Windows-bundled drivers which work but dont support your hardware fully.

To record the audio to your hard disk you can use a simple audio recording program like <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/GoldWave/">GoldWave</a>

If you record entire sides of an LP or Tape as one big file you can then split up the tracks and convert them to MP3 use something like <a href="http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/LPRipper/">LP Ripper</a> - it can record your LPs and Tapes directly to MP3 on your hard disk.

problem with bitheadz

Hello to everyone.I have trouble with Bitheadz Unity
Session v.3.3.2 (2004)and since the company went out
of business i am support-less.As a stand-alone it works fine but when i use it as a vsti in Cubase 32
(v.5?)it emits a crackling sound when i press on my
controller key and stops when i leave go of the key;
so i hear the sound and an annoying crackle.All other
vsti's work well.I,m using an edirol ua-5 audio capture and windows XP.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated;there are some cool sounds in this
software and i'm frustrated that i can't use them.

multi-track recording

I have a peavey xr1600f and I would like to multi-track record. I use the console at church. I record onto a tape recorder, but i would like to isolate each channel so that I can overdub. What type of interface do I need and what is a interface.

Depends what it is you're trying to do, but once you've mixed down to a stereo track, that's it - there's no way you can isolate individual channels. If you want to keep channels isolated, then the only way is to use a multi-track recorder (either tape, DVD or PC based). What you do depends very much on your budget.

I think you missed the point. The title of your post says it all - multi-track recording. A mixer won't do this for you - this mixes the tracks together, and once that happens you won't be able to separate them again. At the risk of repeating myself, you need either a multi-track recorder (either tape or DVD based) or a PC running a sequencing package (Cubase or similar). Only with this kind of equipment will you be able to keep the tracks separate until you're ready to mix them into stereo.

Tape editting

Is it possible to edit a cassette recording from the recorder to computer using pro-tools? After the editting the editted work will than have to be recorded back on to cassette and or cd's. The recordings are of talk or game highlights to be used for making demo tapes and cd's. Which software or program would be the best to use?
